Today I will look at all my fears in a new light.
I can now see them as a result of my thinking
and will turn over all my fear thoughts to my Higher Power.
Fear no longer owns me or is a threat to my day.

Creation

Cold
Ungiving
As a block of marble

Yet beats there a heart
Desirous of living.

The sculptor approaches
The stone
Seems to shiver

One vein pulses gently
And sets the whole a-quiver.

A being emerges
With the chisel's kiss
Is set free.

By gifts of love
And energetic labour
This statue is me.

Just For Today
May 20                                Coming Out of Isolation

"We find ourselves doing and enjoying things that we never
thought we would be doing." Basic Text, p. 98

Active addiction kept us isolated for many reasons. In the beginning,
we avoided family and friends so they wouldn't find out we were using.
Some of us avoided all nonaddicts, fearing moral backlash and legal
repercussions. We belittled people who had "normal" lives with families
and hobbies; we called them "uncool:' believing we could never enjoy
the simple pleasures of life. Eventually, we even avoided other addicts
because we didn't want to share our drugs. Our lives narrowed, and our
concerns were confined to the daily maintenance of our disease.

Today, our lives are much fuller. We enjoy activities with other
recovering addicts. We have time for our families. And we've discovered
many other pursuits that give us pleasure. What a change from the past!
We can live life just as fully as the "normal" people we once scorned.
Enjoyment has returned to our lives, a gift of recovery.

Just for today:  I can find pleasure in the simple routines of daily
living. pg. 146

Walking Through Fear

If we still cling to something we will not let go, we ask God to help us
be willing.
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p.  76

When I had taken my Fifth Step, I became aware that all my defects
of character stemmed from my need to feel secure and loved.  To
use my will alone to work on them would have been trying
obsessively to solve the problem.  In the Sixth Step I intensified the
action I had taken in the first three Steps -- meditating on the Step by
saying it over and over, going to meetings, following my sponsor's
suggestions, reading and searching within myself.  During the first
three years of sobriety I had a fear of entering an elevator alone.  One
day I decided I must walk through this fear.  I asked for God's help,
entered the elevator, and there in the corner was a lady crying.  She
said that since her husband had died she was deathly afraid of
elevators.  I forgot my fear and comforted her.  This
spiritual experience helped me to see how willingness was the key
to working the rest of the Twelve Steps to recovery.  God helps those
who help themselves.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ May 20th

A.A. Thought for the Day

If we get up in a meeting and tell something about ourselves
in order to help the other person, we feel a whole lot better.
It's the old law of the more you give the more you get.
Witnessing and confession are part of keeping sober. You
never know when you may help somebody. Helping others is
one of the best ways to stay sober yourself And the
satisfaction you get out of helping a fellow human being
is one of the finest experiences you can have. Am I helping
others?

Meditation for the Day

Without God, no real victory is ever won. All the military
victories of great conquerors have passed into history. The
world might be better off without military conquerors. The
real victories are won in the spiritual realm. "He that conquers
himself is greater than he who conquers a city." The real
victories are victories over sin and temptation, leading to
a victorious and abundant life. Therefore, keep a brave
and trusting heart. Face all your difficulties in the spirit of
conquest. Remember that where God is, there is the true
victory.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that the forces of evil in my life will flee before God's
presence. I pray that with God I will win the real victory over
myself.

Today's Thought
MAY 20

You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Melody Beattie ©

Sadness

Ultimately, to grieve our losses means to surrender to our feelings.

So many of us have lost so much, have said so many good byes
-- have been through so many changes. We may want to hold back
the tides of change, not because the change isn't good, but because
we have had so much change, so much loss.

Sometimes, when we are in the midst of pain and grief, we become
shortsighted, like members of a tribe described in the movie Out of
Africa.

"If you put them in prison," one character said, describing this tribe,
"they die."

"Why?" asked another character.

"Because they can't grasp the idea that they'll be let out one day.
They think it's permanent, so they die."

Many of us have so much grief to get through. Sometimes we begin
to believe grief, or pain, is a permanent condition.

The pain will stop. Once felt and released, our feelings will bring
us to a better place than where we started. Feeling our feelings,
instead of denying or minimizing them, is how we heal from our
past and move forward into a better future. Feeling our feelings
is how we let go.

It may hurt for a moment, but peace and acceptance are on the
other side. So is a new beginning.

God, help me fully embrace and finish my endings, so I may be
ready for my new beginnings.

Permission Granted To Have A Wonderful Life
by Marie T. Russell

Marie T. Russell How many times have you made a decision to change something in your life and then found yourself slipping off the path you had chosen? Have you found yourself repeating past behavior even though the higher side of your consciousness knew better than to be caught in that same old trap? Is it that you were insincere in your choice or rather that you stumbled on old programming?

The mind and the subconscious have alternately been considered as master or enemy. They are neither — they are wonderful tools available to us to create the life we choose. Unfortunately, some people have yet to realize that they themselves 'run the show'. They have let the mind and subconscious run on automatic without verifying that the operating program is truly what they now desire.

In dealing with 'undesirable' patterns, be aware that the motivation for habitual actions resides in our subconscious. Those patterns are a response to our previous programming. Maybe we felt, in the past, that the safest way to react to anger was to hold our breath and suppress our feelings deep inside. Or possibly our habitual reaction to new situations was to figuratively crawl into the deepest part of ourselves and hide. These response patterns may have become entrenched in our subconscious as part of our self-defense mechanism — they form a set of rules that dictate our automatic behavior.

You may have made a mental decision to change some thought pattern or behavior, but neglected to inform your "manager" (subconscious) that you had changed the ground rules. Thus, it still was operating according to the old rules thinking that it was serving you. Once it becomes aware that a new behavior (i.e. expressing yourself) is what you now desire, it will happily assist you in manifesting that new reality.

You may need to remind your mental computer (subconscious) more than once of the new direction you desire to take. It was told many times, in the past, of the "proper" or "other" way to behave and you now need to reassure it that you truly do want it to behave in a new fashion. You need to inform it that you are now playing the game of life differently. Tell it that you now choose to "play" life joyfully, lightly, and with harmlessness and harmony as your methods of operation.

A powerful tool which helps re-program the 'management' of the subconscious is to inform it that you now give it permission to operate differently. Remember you are the one, either through direct communication or through agreement with others, that set the rules for your subconscious' behavior. You now need to pull out the old policy and replace it with a new one.

This can be done by simply telling your subconscious, while you are in a reflective or meditative state of mind, that you now give yourself permission to live life the way you desire (i.e. to take risks and express your emotions to the people in your life). You could phrase it as "I now give myself complete permission to.....(be happy, healthy, etc.)". You then proceed to affirm, "I now release the fear of.....(expressing my emotions, etc.)" It helps to let out a huge sigh at this point to physically release the stored emotions.

If you find yourself thinking something like "I'm always late", release all the guilt by affirming: "I now release all guilt for being late in the past, present, and future. I now give myself permission to be on time." Remember, your sub-conscious has taken your thought of "I'm always late" as a command and has dutifully assisted you in creating that reality. You might want to thank it for its assistance and make it clear that you now want its help in being on time (or healthy, happy, wealthy, etc.).

Life is what you make it! You can clean out the cobwebs in the old programming and revamp the guidelines to reflect your new vision of yourself and of the life you choose to have surrounding you. Be aware of your present thoughts. In a sense, you need to be "watching" your thoughts at all times to spot the ones that sabotage your goals. Once you detect the thoughts that are 'against' your highest good, you can proceed to change them.

Take a good look at the scripts you have accumulated for the future and see if there are any editorial changes and major rewriting that you need to do. Change the script! Give yourself permission to have a great and fantastic life.

Comfort

Cats love sunshine
mine seeks out the falling rays
and she sprawls herself on them
all the more to absorb the heat
the light the warmth
her daily comfort dosage
of pleasure

Souls love comfort
we will go to great lengths
to seek out its benefits
to spread ourselves in its warmth
to acquire a smile, a hug, a word
of love
as sunshine on the floor
love flows generously
from children
from mothers
from fathers
from lovers

today seek the sun
and spread yourself
a little sunshine

First Meeting

Anxious, exhausted, suicidal

The words spoken were like clear water
Rushing in torrents, running through my soul

I was still chaos inside
And I still longed to die

But I listened, and I believed
Eyes downcast, but still relieved.

It felt like someone was finally helping
Someone was finally there,
After all those years of suffering
When I knew no one really cared

I was a child of chaos
An adult of despair

Broken feelings
Shattered dreams
And worst of all it seemed
No one loved me.

I felt so uncomfortable in that church
After everything I had done
I had been on a long, long search
To be the chosen one.

Now I know
It took so much courage
To sit in that chair and try
Though I could not cry

All I could think was Why?
I stayed and
We Prayed

Just for Today
I am Recovering

GOD, make me a better person

Teach me to understand people, no matter
how big or small they may appear to be by my estimate.
Show me where I have hidden my own defects of character
instead of me finding defects in others.

Teach me to listen to what people have to say;
to answer their questions unselfishly and fairly,
or just to simply reply with kindness.

Keep me from interrupting people,
or contradicting them when they speak.
Make me, as courteous and tolerant to others,
as I would expect them be to me.

Forbid that I should spread poison gossip;
don't let me laugh at others mistakes
or resort to shame or ridicule when people displease me.

May I never punish or condemn others,
for my own selfish satisfaction,
or to show I have more power than them.

Let me not tempt others to lie, deceive or harm people.
And guide me, hour by hour, to demonstrate by all that I say and do,
that honesty will produce a stronger character and ultimately, happiness.

Reduce, I pray, this evilness in me, for it is my greatest enemy.
And when I feel out of patience with myself,
help me God, to hold back a vicious tongue.

May I ever be mindful that people are people,
and I should not impose on them,
the judgement left for You, alone.

Let me not rob others, of the opportunity to
make choices and decisions for themselves.

Bless me, with the willingness to give, when the request is reasonable.
And the courage to deny things I know,
from my experiences, can bring harm by any measure.

Loan me, Your Wisdom, to have pure motives in all my affairs or endeavors.
And fit me, God, to be an instrument of Love and Respect,
so others will imitate me.

Recovery Prayer

May today there be peace within.
May you trust your Highest Power
that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received,
and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom
to sing, dance, and to bask in the sun.

I Have Been Shown the Way

I have filled my heart and soul with AA
To help me learn to live and get through another day
When I felt so lost and could not get by
I realized I needed help or I could possibly die
The arms of AA were welcoming me
I just had to convince myself that this is where I needed to be
I am living peacefully, not just existing today
I owe it to AA and God and this is the only way!!!!!

Yes, we of agnostic temperament have had these thoughts and
experiences. Let us make haste to reassure you. We found that as
soon as we were able to lay aside prejudice and express even a
willingness to believe in a Power greater than ourselves, we
commenced to get results, even though it was impossible for any of
us to fully define or comprehend that Power, which is God.
Much to our relief, we discovered we did not need to consider
another's conception of God. Our own conception, however
inadequate, was sufficient to make the approach and to effect a
contact with Him. As soon as we admitted the possible existence
of a Creative Intelligence, a Spirit of the Universe underlying the
totality of things, we began to be possessed of a new sense of power
and direction, provided we took other simple steps. We found that God
does not make too hard terms with those who seek Him. To us, the
Realm of Spirit is broad, roomy, all inclusive; never exclusive
or forbidding to those who earnestly seek.
It is open, we believe,  to all men.
