Just For Today
May 9 Write About It!
"We sit down with a notebook, ask for guidance, pick up our pen,
and start writing."Basic Text, p. 29
When we're confused or in pain, our sponsor sometimes tells us to
"write about it." Though we may groan as we drag out the notebook,
we know that it will help. By laying it all out on paper, we give
ourselves the chance to sort through what's bothering us. We know
we can get to the bottom of our confusion and find out what's really
causing our pain when we put the pen to the paper.
Writing can be rewarding, especially when working through the
steps. Many members maintain a daily journal. Simply thinking about
the steps, pondering their meaning, and analyzing their effect is not
sufficient for most of us. There's something about the physical action
of writing that helps to fix the principles of recovery in our minds and
hearts.
The rewards we find through the simple action of writing are many.
Clarity of thought, keys to locked places inside of us, and the voice of
conscience are but a few. Writing helps us be more honest with
ourselves. We sit down, quiet our thoughts, and listen to our hearts.
What we hear in the stillness are the truths that we put down on
paper.
Just for today: One of the ways I can search for truth in recovery is
to write. I will write about my recovery today. pg. 135

An Inside Look
We want to find exactly how, when, and where our natural desires have
warped us. We wish to look squarely at the unhappiness this has
caused others and ourselves. By discovering what our emotional
deformities are, we can move toward their correction.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 43
Today I am no longer a slave to alcohol, yet in so many ways
enslavement still threatens-my self, my desires, even my dreams.
Yet without dreams I cannot exist; without dreams there is nothing to
keep me moving forward. I must look inside myself, to free myself I must
call upon God's power to face the person I've feared the most, the true
me, the person God created me to be. Unless I can or until I do, I will
always be running, and never be truly free. I ask God daily to show me
such a freedom!

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ May 9th
A.A. Thought for the Day
We alcoholics used so little self-control when we were
drinking, we were so absolutely selfish, that it does us
good to give up something once in a while. Using self-
discipline and denying ourselves a few things is good
for us. At first, giving up liquor is a big enough job for
all of us, even with God's help. But later on, we can practice
self-discipline in other ways to keep a firm grip on our
minds so that we don't start any wishful thinking. If we
daydream too much, we'll be in danger of slipping. Am
I practicing enough self-discipline?
Meditation for the Day
In material things, you must rely on your own wisdom and
that of others. In spiritual things, you cannot rely so much
on your own wisdom as on God's guidance. In dealing with
personalities, it is a mistake to step out too much m your
own. You must try to be guided by God in all human
relationships. You cannot accomplish much of value in dealing
with people until God knows you are ready. You alone do not
have the power or wisdom to put things right between people.
You must rely on God to help you in these vital matters.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may rely on God in dealing with people's
problems. I pray that I may try to follow His guidance
in all personal relationships.

Learning New Behaviors
Sometimes we'll take a few steps backward. That's okay too.
Sometimes it's necessary. Sometimes it's part of going forward.
--Codependent No More
Life is a Gentle Teacher. She wants to help us learn.
The lessons she wants to teach us are the ones we need to learn.
Some say they are the lessons we chose to learn before we were
born. Others say they are the lessons that were chosen for us.
It's frustrating to be in the midst of learning. It is like sitting in
algebra class, listening to a teacher explain a subject beyond our
comprehension. We do not understand, but the teacher takes the
understanding for granted.
It may feel like someone is torturing us with messages that we
shall never understand. We strain and strain. We become angry.
Frustrated. Confused. Finally, in despair, we turn away, deciding
that that formula will never be available to our mind.
Later, while taking a quiet walk, we break through. Quietly, the gift
of understanding has reached that deepest place in us. We
understand. We have learned. The next day in class, it's hard for us
to imagine not knowing. It is hard to remember the frustration and
confusion of those who have not yet caught on. It seems so easy . . .
now.
Life is a Gentle Teacher. She will keep repeating the lesson until
we learn. It is okay to become frustrated. Confused. Angry.
Sometimes it is okay to despair. Then, it is okay to walk away and
allow the breakthrough to come.
It shall.
Help me remember that frustration and confusion usually precede
growth. If my situation is challenging me, it is because I'm learning
something new, rising to a higher level of understanding. Help me
be grateful, even in my frustration, that life is an exciting progression
of lessons.

OWNING YOUR PERSONAL POWER
By Lloyd J. Thomas, Ph.D.
After reading a recent column of mine, a woman writes: "How do you
become proactive? Aren't people really victims of circumstance? If
they are, how do they change them so that they can be relatively
happy? I have talked to many women on this subject and they all feel
that their circumstances are ruling their lives, to their detriment.
Divorce, unpaid child support, who will watch the children, how to
divide housework, if YOU would like to return to work or not and when.
All of these decisions are being made for them by their husbands. Do
they have a choice? I don't think so. We are not really masters of
our own fate. Please convince me otherwise. I want to take charge of
my life and so do most others but no one knows how. We would be happy
with a 50/50 win." This letter was signed, "A Regular Reader."
My dear reader, you do not have to be so victimized by life, by your
husband, by people, situations, friends, circumstances. If you see
yourself as a helpless victim, you will behave like one. Behaving
like a victim invites others to make decisions for you. Those same
decisions you feel victimized by.
You can own your own power. You do not have to stand there with your
hands tied, groveling helplessly, and submitting to whatever comes
along. There are lots of things you can do. You can speak up. You
can assert your own wants and needs. You can solve problems. You can
create problems for others to motivate them to take responsibility for
themselves. You can use your own problems to invite you to take
responsibility for yourself. You can let go of your fear of the
future. You can stop avoiding the future by scaring yourself with
"what if" questions. You can choose how you want to respond to ANY
event or circumstance.
You can make yourself feel good. You can do something good for
yourself. You can walk away, and come back only on your own terms.
You can stand up for yourself. You can refuse to let others control
and manipulate you. You can do whatever it takes to take good care of
yourself.
If you can't do anything about circumstances, others' behavior or
choices, you can change your own attitude and change your own
responses. You can work within...face your own fears with courage.
Work on yourself. There is an old Seneca Indian saying, "It's better
to cover your own feet with leather than to try and cover all the
rocks in the world." You are a victim only to the extent you ignore
yourself, your own feelings, your own needs, your own thinking, your
own beliefs and values.
Take risks. Someone once wrote the following about risk-taking: "To
laugh is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing
sentimental. To reach for another is to risk involvement. To expose
your ideas, your dreams, before a crowd [or your husband] is to risk
their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is
to risk dying. To believe is to risk failure. But risks must be
taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing."
"The people who risk nothing, do nothing, have nothing, are nothing.
They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, feel,
change, grow, love, live. Chained by their attitudes, they are
slaves; they have forfeited their freedom. Only a person who risks is
free."
Stop trying so hard to control the things over which you have no
power and start controlling those things over which you do have
power...mostly yourself. Recognize that it is how you perceive events
that is threatening, usually not the events themselves. One person's
threat is another's challenge. You can control your perceptions.
Remember it is the meaning you attribute to circumstances outside
yourself to which your body responds. You have the power to change
that meaning. Is a lemon so sour a fruit it's useless? Is it a
glorious source of lemonade? Is it a beautiful object of a painting?
You decide how you want to see it.
Knowing and using your own personal power will free you from your
self-imposed prison of fear and helplessness. Learn to love yourself,
value your uniqueness, ask for your wants and needs to be met or meet
them yourself, accept your weaknesses, and identify your strengths.
Let go of the childhood view that others, or events control and
determine your life. Refer all responses to their source...yourself.
Dear "Regular Reader," even if you practice just a few of these
suggestions you will begin "being in charge of your life." By the way,
don't settle for a 50/50 win. Don't compromise on your own power.
Never settle for less than winning your fearless freedom and happiness
all the time.

Fine Dining
Many distractions
lead you astray
Life tantalizes with sweets, with the delicious
satisfy the surface needs
make them shut up for a while
(so says your tastebuds)
but that's the superficial quick way
to feed yourself
we all know
the deeper hunger
Loud clear satisfaction cannot be gleaned
from nibbling or snacking
or even from chocolate cake
or one-night stands
An investment of higher value
is required to nourish such a worthy cause
That of reaching your Dream
That of filling all the emptiness
embodied in heart spirit soul
Stop the feeding frenzy
Listen to your Heart
Heed the message
Leave yourself a memo
nurture the Self
and never forget
There Are No Coincidences

Facing Our Fears
"Throughout life's path many of us are faced with FEARS.
In other aspects of our lives, we have FAITH in someone or something.
Definition of FEAR
It is something that hasn't happened yet,
but we feel that it will happen in the future.
Definition of FAITH
It is something that hasn't happened yet,
but we feel that it will happen in the future.
The only difference in FEAR and FAITH
is how we perceive things.
If we trust in our spirit, FAITH will surely override FEAR.
But if we trust in our flesh, FEAR will override FAITH.
Look at things in light, not darkness, and FEAR shall retreat."

Complete Man
I have a pain deep inside of me
I am not blind I can see
I start my daily journey with a prayer
I pray dear God make me aware
I share a smile to all I pass
I am not first
I am not last
No more bridges do I burn
I had many lessons I had to learn
I have been up
I have been down
That did not stop me
I kept coming around
We must keep coming back you see
It takes time to learn to live free
Bring the body the mind will follow
Just keep coming back from day to day
For all too soon you will learn your way
AA is a program of action
Cleaning house
Brings satisfaction
Today I see with my inner eye
Insight to my life
I no longer ask why
Now at last I understand
I will never be more or less
Than just a mortal man

Hell is Awake
Mom and dad woke up that one fateful morning,
and found their only teenage son smoking pot
their lives changed forever in that one instant
little did they know, hell was descending
Mom and Dad tried talking and negotiating
finding ways and words to help their only son
their attention given fully to their son
but they did not know, darkness was not leaving
Soon Mom and Dad found their son graduating to heroin
they found this only when their son overdosed in the bathroom
the battle of addiction began to be too much to bear for them
again, with little they know, they did everything they can
Mom and Dad finally took their son to a doctor to fix
nothing changed, as their son relapsed minutes after detox
and after a few months to their horror they found
HIV and HCV has became a reality in their household
Mom and Dad went to yet another doctor,
who said that they mut keep their son's behavior safe
only to find a few months afterwards
their only son had made three girls pregnant
Mom and Dad, began living in a private hell
none of their kin would help, none understood
the shame and the deep pain their son had caused
all fingers blamed only Mom and Dad
Mom and Dad sought those who'd listen,
through the doors of 12 Steps they have gone
finally although their son was still addicted,
their pain has slowly easing and diminishing
Yet, tonight as Mom and Dad were at the meeting
the junkie son came home to rip off their home
Mom and Dad, were left with nothing
The reality of Addiction is nothing but hell
Addiction is an awakening hell, they know that by now
dragging not only the addict, but also their families
if families are not enough, they drag their friends
deep into the abyss, the thick darkness of hell
and still the darkness clamour for more and more .....
People continue to ask,
why do you continue to go back
why do you continue to live in hell,
reduced, ultimately to animalistic level
Yet addicts continue to chase the dragon,
until the dragon stops dead, red fiery eyed, on its track
to the addict, the dragon would finally look back
and roaring vicious fire, the dragon chases the addict
You can't tell the dragon to stop
until the dragon has finally destroyed the addict
and until what remains of the addict
is ashes to ashes, dust to dust ....
For those of you who have found recovery
please stop relapsing once and for all
the cost is too great, for love, there's no survival
all are lost, until all is regained, through true recovery
God, however you may call God
patiently, and lovingly awaits you ....
to reach out your hand and finally .....
take 12 steps into a life with God ....
Leaving without turning ....
honestly and willingly ...
once and for all your life in hell
retreating from your deadly dance with the devil

Addiction
An image of life beating in my mind.
A picturesque illusion,
Neither loving or kind.
My heart pulses quickly with anxiety and fear.
While the demons within become all to clear.
An indiscriminate evil relaxed in my soul.
Relay words of anger,
Again, I lost control
I feel trapped in a haze.....
Outside looking in.
Controlled by hands that muzzle
My screams from within.
Things that were once familiar
Now seem so strange.
My body shakes uncontrollably
As I fill with rage.
Can't anyone see that this isn't me?
I want out of this hell,
I want to be free !!!!
