Anger

Why have I been experiencing so much anger here of late?
I feel as I did a few years back, always full of anger and hate.

As I sat here trying to figure why I get so upset to see people that waste,
I remember when I lived in a tent in summer,
a cellar in the winter
and was glad to get anything that taste.

This is a part of my life I had almost forgotten,
another part to make me grateful today.
I must remember, not everyone has experienced
the want of love and food, they didn't live that way.

I also realize I haven't lived their ways either
and probably wouldn't understand.
When something from their past comes back to remind them
I hope they can write about it like I can.

Even though this has came to me,
I hope I can turn it over to a God who loves me,
I know one thing I can remember hearing,
waste not, want not, both He and I on that agree.

I have been so full of anger at everyone
and everything for several days or more,
I have tried to justify it within myself
and have done a good job until now, no longer can I be sore.

If it continues there is trouble for me ahead,
I don't want to go back as I once was so sick,
Please God, help me to overcome this,
You have helped me so much, don't give up on me,
help me quick.

I give my children to you, they don't like the way I am, I can't change
them,
But God with Your help we can work on me,
if they can't accept that, it's their problem,

Take this anger and hostility from me please,
I don't like it.  I feel so ill at ease.
I say this as a prayer, not as an order,
there are no bargains, just take it, please.

Just For Today
March 11                                    Lightening The Load

"It will not make us better people to judge the faults
of another It will make us feel better to clean up our
lives.".  Basic Text, p. 37

Sometimes we need something tangible to help us
understand what holding a resentment is doing to us. We
may not be aware of how destructive resentments actually
are. We think, "So what, I have a right to be angry;' or,
"I might be nursing a grudge or two, but I don't see the
harm."

To see more clearly the effect that holding resentments
is having in our lives, we might try imagining that we
are carrying a rock for each resentment. A small grudge,
such as anger at someone driving badly, might be
represented by a pebble. Harboring ill will toward an
entire group of people might be represented by a enormous
boulder. If we actually had to carry stones for each
resentment, we would surely tire of the weight. In fact,
the more cumbersome our burden, the more sincere our
efforts to unload it would be.

The weight of our resentments hinders our spiritual
development. If we truly desire freedom, we will seek to
rid ourselves of as much extra weight as possible. As we
lighten up, we'll notice an increased ability to forgive
our fellow human beings for their mistakes, and to
forgive ourselves for our own. Well nourish our spirits
with good thoughts, kind words, and service to others.

Just for today:  I will seek to have the burden of resentments
removed from my spirit.

It Works

It works -- it really does.
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p.  88

When I got sober I initially had faith only in the program of Alcoholics
Anonymous.  Desperation and fear kept me sober (and maybe a caring and/or
tough sponsor helped!).  Faith in a Higher Power came much later.  This
faith came slowly at first, after I began listening to others share at
meetings about their experiences -- experiences that I had never faced
sober, but that they were facing with strength from a Higher Power.  Out of
their sharing came hope that I too would -- and could -- "get" a Higher
Power.  In time, I learned that a Higher power -- a faith that works under
all conditions -- is possible.  Today this faith, plus the honesty,
Open-mindedness and willingness to work the Steps Of the program, gives me
the serenity that I seek.  It works -- it really does.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden / March 11th

A.A. Thought for the Day

By having quiet times each morning, we come to
depend on God's help during the day, especially
if we should be tempted to take a drink.  And
we can honestly thank Him each night for the
strength He has given us.  So our faith is
strengthened by these quiet times of prayer.
By listening to other members, by working with
other alcoholics, by times of quiet meditation,
our faith in God gradually becomes strong.  Have
I turned my drinking problem entirely over to God,
without reservations?

Meditation for the Day

It seems as though, when God wants to express
to men what He is like, He makes a very beautiful
character.  Think of a personality as God's
expression of character attributes.  Be as fit
an expression of Godlike character as you can.
When the beauty of a person's character is
impressed upon us, it leaves an image which in
turn reflects through our own actions.  So look
for beauty of character in those around you.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may look at great souls until their
beauty of character becomes a part of my soul.
I pray that I may reflect this character in my
own life.

Today's Thought
MARCH 11

You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Melody Beattie ©

Letting Go of Confusion

Sometimes, the way is not clear.

Our minds get clouded, confused. We aren't certain what our next step should
be, what it will look like, what direction we are headed.

This is the time to stop, ask for guidance, and rest. That is the time to
let go of fear. Wait. Feel the confusion and chaos, and then let it go. The
path will show itself. The next step shall be revealed. We don't have to
know now. We will know in time. Trust that. Let go and trust.

Today, I will wait if the way is not clear. I will trust that out of the
chaos will come clarity.

Emotions Are Your Guides
by Doreen Virtue, Ph.D.

Some people cannot distinguish or name the emotions that they feel. In such
cases, it's important to increase the emotional vocabulary and learn how
varied feelings can be.

An easy way to accomplish this is to use an emotional vocabulary list (see
below). Make several photocopies of this list and keep them handy. Once or
twice daily, stop and circle the feelings that describe your current
emotional state. Within a week or two, this process will create a marked
increase in your ability to distinguish one feeling from another. You will,
for example, be better able to sort out your mixed feelings. This process
also helps us to own our feelings and heal them ourselves instead of
projecting them on other people, and then relying on them to change so we
can feel better.

I used a list similar to the one below when I was in my early twenties and
newly enrolled in college. I was just becoming aware of the variegated
spectrum of emotions.

In one of my psychology courses, the professor emphasized the importance of
understanding your feelings. So, he regularly asked the students in the
class, "What are you feeling right now?" When he'd ask me, I'd invariably
answer, "Well, I think that I'm ... "

The professor would interrupt and say, "No, Doreen. Don't tell me what you
think. Tell me how you feel." When I answered, "Tired," he'd reply, "That's
a physical feeling, not an emotion!"

I realized I had very limited awareness of my range of emotions, so I used
an emotional vocabulary list for several weeks. The rainbow of feelings I
had inside amazed me! Through this process of discovery, I learned how to
pinpoint the precise emotion I felt.

How are you feeling right now? Circle all that apply:

You can use this vocabulary to decipher the intuitive guidance that comes to
you. Whenever you feel a strong emotional or physical feeling, remember that
it is a message to you. The feeling is the equivalent of a knock on the
door. Our task is to open the door and listen to the feeling. One way to do
this is by asking the feeling, "What are you trying to tell me?" Even if
this process seems silly or feels forced, ask the question anyway. You will
receive a reply.

Trusting Your Clairsentience
The next step is learning to trust the feelings. Clairsentience is the
reception of Divine guidance through physical feelings and emotions. You may
struggle with doubts over the validity of a clairsentient message. You worry
that following the feeling's guidance may lead to hardship. Sometimes,
clairsentients tell me they are waiting to receive "permission" from outside
before allowing themselves to follow their gut feelings. Other
clairsentients hesitate to follow an intimidating or seemingly illogical gut
feeling.

One way to increase trust in your clairsentience is to review past occasions
on which you were glad you followed your intuition, and occasions when you
were sorry you didn't. You can also mentally "try on" a situation to feel
what it would be like to follow your intuition and to know if you would
enjoy the outcome. Another way is through repeatedly saying affirmations to
reduce fear, such as, "I deserve happiness," "When I win, others win too,"
and "I fearlessly follow God's guidance for me now".

The best way to increase faith in your clairsentient guidance is to mentally
ask God and the angels to help you release any blocks that keep you from
enjoying full faith and clear feelings. Feel the release and lift as you
surrender all fearful thoughts and energies to the Divine spiritual realm.
You don't need to analyze your fears; just open your heart to God and the
angels, and they will do all of the healing work for you. Repeat this method
every time you feel afraid.

Remember that warm and loving feelings surround true Divine guidance, even
when it warns of trouble or confronts you about unhealthy behaviors. False
guidance creates cold, prickly feelings.

If you receive any guidance that makes you feel inadequate or afraid, then
you are wise not to follow it. Instead, call on the angels and ask them to
help you shed these feelings. They love to be called on to help you
understand and follow God's glorious will for you. Heaven wants to help you
clear away the effects of the lower self's fears.

When the late, great philosopher Joseph Campbell advised, "Follow your
bliss," he meant we should ask for guidance; the joyful, God given
directions are roadmaps to success in all ways. When you have joyless
feelings, let them tell you what areas of your life aren't working. Ask God
to help you have the courage to shed them, and to replace them with
situations that truly make your heart sing.

Fears of loneliness, poverty, abandonment, criticism, and other pain come
from the lower-self ego. It tries to tell us that, if we let go of joyless
parts of our life, something terrible will happen. We must not believe the
ego's threats, but instead, honor ourselves. If you feel resistance in any
part of your life, listen to it. It is guidance from God and the angels
telling you that something is amiss. Heaven does not will discomfort. God
wills for you and all of His children to have your material needs met while
you fulfill your Divine life-purpose.

God doesn't want you to do anything that could hurt you or your family. When
you ask God for guidance, His power works through you to heal your life and
the lives of those around you. You cannot fail, because God cannot fail.

The Lesson Of The Geese

This fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter flying
along in the "V" formation, you might consider what science has
discovered as to why they fly that way.

FACT:  As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an "uplift" for the
bird immediately following. By flying in the "V" formation, the
whole flock has at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird
flew on its own.

LESSON: People who share a common direction and sense of community
can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they
are traveling on the thrust of one another.

FACT: When a goose flies out of formation, it suddenly feels the
drag and resistance of trying to go it alone. It quickly gets back
into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird
in front of it.

LESSON:  If we have as much common sense as a goose, we stay in
formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to
accept their help and give our help to others. It is harder to do
something alone than together.

FACT:  When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the
formation, and another goose flies to the point position.

LESSON:  It is sensible to take turns doing the hard and demanding
tasks and sharing leadership. As with geese, people are
interdependent on each other's skills, capabilities, and unique
arrangements of gifts, talents, or resources.

FACT:  The geese flying in formation honk from behind to encourage
those up front to keep up their speed.

LESSON:  We need to make sure our honking is encouraging.  In
groups where there is encouragement, the production is much
greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by one's heart or
core values and encourage the heart and core of others) is the
quality of honking we seek. We need to make sure our honking is
encouraging and not discouraging.

FACT: When a goose gets sick, wounded, or shot down, two other
geese will drop out of formation with that goose and follow it down
to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until
it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out on their
own, or with another formation to catch up with their flock.

LESSON: If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by our
colleagues and each other in difficult times as well as in good!

Grief

No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear.  I am not afraid
but the sensation is like being afraid.  The same fluttering in the
stomach, the same restlessness, the yawning.  I keep on swallowing.....
Not that I am (I think) in much danger of ceasing to believe in God.
The real danger is of coming to believe such dreadful things about Him.
The conclusion I dread is not  "So there's no God after all,
" but "So this is what God's really like.  Deceive yourself no longer."
C.S. Lewis, A Grief Observed

There's no way to prepare for deep grief, for the pain that
shatters a heart and a life when a beloved leaves.

No one can coach us on it.
Those who could, who knew exactly how it felt,
who describe it in detail, would not presume
to encroach on this most intimate part
of our relationship with a loved one.
Those who casually say,
"Aren't you over that yet?" don't understand.

This much I will tell you about grief: If there was ever a second,
or a moment, when you suspected or knew you had been betrayed
at the deepest level by someone you adored, and a splintering pain
began to shred your heart, turn your world grimly unbearable to the
point where you would consciously choose denial and ignorance about
the betrayal rather than feel this way, that is one one-millionth of
what it feels like to grieve.

Grief is not an abnormal condition, nor is it something
to be treated with words.
It is a universe, a world, unto itself.
If you are called to enter this world,
there is no turning back.
We are not allowed to refuse that call.
Grief is like nothing else, with the possible exception of the pounding
waves of the ocean.
To the untrained, casual eye, each wave looks the same.
It is not.  No two are the same.
And each one washes away the old,
and washes in the new.

Gradually, almost imperceptibly, whether we believe it
or not, we are being transformed.

God, take care of me those moments and hours when I cannot find
the will or power to take care of myself.
Transform me, if not in the twinkling of an eye,
then over the slow movement of the years, into who I will become.

The Entertainer

Evening comes in bitter sweet
Relief is calling, my day complete
I look for no one, I close my blind
And hear the voice inside my mind
Beside me sits a crystal glass
Inside - false hope, a backstage pass
To a show I don't want to see
But the entertainer beckons me
He sings a hymn with rig in sight
Inside my room prepared for flight
I tremble as I always do
And in my fear I look for you
I hear you talking, I feel you there
Must keep you blind and unaware
A storm grows strong outside the walls
My mind grows calm when Heaven calls
To you it was another day
Nothing more or less - as others say
But in that moment I wished you knew
And prayed for words of solitude
Absolution would never come
I drank the strength of sweet dark rum
I prepared to say farewell to you
And found a vein - yes, this will do
A hand I could not see touched me
A voice I could not hear but see
Said I can help please let me try
To wash away the pain inside
I question not just how you know
We sit in silence as moments grow
I crawl to you - unstable ground
And hold my heart to stop the sound
"You are found though not yet whole
But He can heal your shattered soul"
And as you spoke those words to me
An Angel wrote my destiny..........
