Gratitude After One Year

One year ago they said I would die,
If I didn't surrender so I said I would try.
I opened my heart and mind to God's will,
My life and soul with love he did fill.
Getting rid of the garbage stuffed deep inside,
Was but one of the suggestions that I did abide.
Please God, I said, take over my life,
Clean up this mess and calm the strife.
That he did and much, much more,
I got loving, and caring, and sharing galore.
I'm sober and straight and happy too,
Though just for today is all I must do.
The talents I have, I'm willing to give,
In hope maybe one more addict may live.
today's the day, in my very own way, I say
thanks, to N.A. , in my own special way.

Just For Today
February 21                  Self-pity or recovery-it's our choice

"Self-pity is one of the most destructive of defects; it will drain us
of all positive energy."     Basic Text, p. 77

In active addiction, many of us used self-pity as a survival mechanism.
We didn't believe there was an alternative to living in our disease—or
perhaps we didn't want to believe. As long as we could feel sorry for
ourselves and blame someone else for our troubles, we didn't have to
accept the consequences of our actions; believing ourselves powerless to
change, we didn't have to accept the need for change. Using this "survival
mechanism" kept us from entering recovery and led us closer, day by day,
to self-destruction. Self-pity is a tool of our disease; we need to stop
using it and learn instead to use the new tools we find in the NA program.

We have come to believe that effective help is available for us; when we
seek that help, finding it in the NA program, self-pity is displaced by
gratitude. Many tools are at our disposal: the Twelve Steps, the support
of our sponsor, the fellowship of other recovering addicts, and the care
of our Higher Power. The availability of all these tools is more than
enough reason to be grateful. We no longer live in isolation, without
hope; we have certain help at hand for anything we may face. The surest
way to become grateful is to take advantage of the help available to us in
the NA program and to experience the improvement the program will
bring in our lives.

Just for today: I will be grateful for the hope NA has given me. I
will cultivate my recovery and stop cultivating self-pity.  pg. 53

The Limits of Self-Reliance

We asked ourselves why we had them [fears].  Wasn't it because
self-reliance failed us?
ANONYMOUS, p.  68

All of my character defects separate me from God's will.  When I
ignore my association with Him I face the world and my alcoholism
alone and must depend on self-reliance.  I have never found
security and happiness through self-will and the only result is a
life of fear and discontent.  God provides the path back to Him and
to His gift of serenity and comfort.  First, however, I must be willing
to acknowledge my fears and understand their source and power
over me.  I frequently ask God to help me understand how I
separate myself from Him.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden / February 21st

A.A. Thought for the Day

I go to the A.A. meetings because it helps me in my
business of keeping sober.  And I try to help other
alcoholics when I can, because that's part of my
business of keeping sober.  I also have a partner
in this business and that's God.  I pray to Him every
day to help me to keep sober.  As long as I keep in
mind that liquor can never be my friend again, but is
now my deadly enemy, and as long as I remember
that my main business is keeping sober and that it's
the most important thing in my life.  I believe, I'll be
prepared for that crucial moment when the idea of
having a drink pops into my mind.  When that idea
comes, will I be able to resist it and not take that drink?

Meditation for the Day

I will be more afraid of spirit-unrest, of soul-disturbance,
of any ruffling of the mind, than of earthquake or fire.
When I feel the calm of my spirit has been broken
by emotional upset, then I must steal away alone with
God, until my heart sings and all is strong and calm again.
Uncalm times are the only times when evil can find an
entrance.  I will beware of unguarded spots of unrest.
I will try to keep calm, no matter what turmoil surrounds me.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that no emotional upsets will hinder God's power
in my life.  I pray that I may keep a calm spirit and a
steady heart.

Living in the Present

The present moment is all we have. Yes, we have plans and
goals, a vision for tomorrow. But now is the only time we
possess. And it is enough.

We can dear our mind of the residue of yesterday. We can clear
our mind of fears of tomorrow. We can be present, now. We can
make ourselves available to this moment, this day. It is by being
fully present now that we reach the fullness of tomorrow.

Have no fear, child, a voice whispers. Have no regrets.
Relinquish your resentments. Let Me take your pain. All you
have is the present moment. Be still. Be here Trust

All you have is now. It is enough.

Today, I will affirm that all is well around me, when all is well
within.

Creating the Best Year of Your Life
by Sopan Greene, M.A.

At the end of each year, and on their birthdays, many people take time to reflect and look ahead. If you're one of these people, or if you would like to start getting the benefits from a little self reflection, then I have some great questions for you.

These questions can be looked at once a year, once a month or whenever you're looking for some direction in your life. I invite you to take a good hard look at your life more than once a year. You'll get a lot more out of your life if you're more conscious about what you're creating.

Some of the questions weren't developed by me and many are from a terrific book called Your Best Year Yet: Ten Questions for Making the Next Twelve Months Your Most Successful Ever by Jinny S. Ditzler. I highly recommend it if you want to go a little deeper.

These questions have been designed to help you to take time to complete the year and to formulate the new year from a clean slate. By working on the following questions you will complete this year powerfully so you can have the room to build a new "me" for the new year.
Looking at this past year:

   1. What do I want to be acknowledged for?
   2. What did I accomplish?
   3. What did I want to accomplish that I did not accomplish? (Do I still want to do this?)
   4. What did I say I would do that I didn't do? (Do I still want to do this?)
   5. Who do I need to be in communication with?
   6. What were my biggest disappointments?
   7. What did I learn? - List 3 lessons which will make the most difference if you remember them this year? (See them as guidelines for next year).

Changing patterns:

   1. How do you limit yourself and how can you transform these actions to be powerful?
   2. What do you say to yourself to explain your failures? (These false beliefs are your limiting paradigm).
   3. List your limiting paradigm.
   4. List your new paradigm which must be personal, positive, present tense, powerfully and simply stated, pointing to an exciting future.
   5. Read your new paradigm out loud when you awake and before going to sleep each day. Teach your subconscious that this is your paradigm.

Looking ahead:

   1. What are your personal values? What is most import to you in your life? What drives you?
   2. What roles do you play in your life? (List 8 or more). Then list new ones you want to incorporate into your life in the next year. Rate each role on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the most important.
   3. Where is your life out of balance? If you could put one problem behind you, once and for all, what would it be?
   4. Which role is your major focus for next year? ( In what role do you want a breakthrough performance? If you could put a check mark by one of these roles at the end of next year showing, showing that you felt good about how you are playing that role, which one would it be?)
   5. What are your goals for each role?

The way that this works is that for at least a week or two you ask yourself the above questions. I write them down and do it in writing several different times. Then after doing that for all of the above questions you answer one final question:

What do I want to accomplish and who do I want to be in the coming year?

Remember the old saying, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." Give yourself the gift of self reflection that will help you to create the life you really want this year. It only takes an hour or two. Don't you deserve better than settling for whatever shows up when fail to plan?...of course you do.

Vision Quest

Going alone into wild nature is an ancient way of connecting with your own
soul. Simply being alive and fully present in the moment opens a direct
connection to all of Creation which shamans call a state of ecstatic union.
If you can feel this even for a moment, it will change your life forever. In
the seeming simplest ways is hidden profound wisdom. The gateway is within.

"The vision quest is a spiritual journey to wisdom that has been practiced
by people for as long as history can remember. The resulting visions are
recorded in cave drawings and described in the oral traditions of cultures
throughout the world. Native North Americans believed that animals took
vision quests when they hibernated during the long winter months. Christ's
forty days in the wilderness was a vision quest. Many of the prayers,
meditations, and rituals used by the world's religions originally were
developed as vehicles for the vision quest. .. We and the other "moderns" on
this planet are perhaps the first people in history not to practice some
form of the vision quest as a regular part of our education process."
(John Perkins from The World is as You Dream It, Shamanic Teachings from the
Amazon and Andes)

What you accomplish on a Solo journey depends on your reason for doing it.
What is your intention for going into nature alone, and how willing and open
are you to what may come to you? Most people I think use the Solo experience
to find themselves or to deepen an already strong connection to spirit.
Whatever the reason, if it is done authentically, it will change your life
forever.

A journey alone is really the only way to connect with yourself. You rely
and trust only on your own instincts. You pay more attention to your gut
feelings. You are not following another's advice or opinions, you do not
have the false security of others around you. You are not trusting another
to keep you safe and out of harms way. Nothing and no one can give you the
confidence and courage to trust yourself, to live your life fearlessly only
your own connection to spirit can do that.

I do know that all spiritual masters spent many years of their lives alone
with nature. This should tell you of the powerful energy of nature. The same
life energy in nature is also within us, we just have to stop our way too
busy lives long enough to feel it. Being alone gives you a more peaceful and
aware feeling towards your own life. You begin to see things in your life
differently and you begin to react with more understanding and Love to the
situations in your life.

The Black Belt

One of the best parables I've ever heard tells about a martial
artist who kneels before a master sensei in a ceremony to receive
the hard-earned Black Belt. After years of relentless training,
the student has finally reached a pinnacle of achievement in the
discipline.

"Before granting you the belt, you must pass one more test," the
sensei solemnly tells the young man.

"I'm ready," responds the student, expecting perhaps one more
round of sparring.

"You must answer the essential question, 'What is the true
meaning of the Black Belt?'"

"Why, the end of my journey," says the student. "A well-deserved
reward for all of my hard work."

The master waits for more. Clearly, he is not satisfied. The
sensei finally speaks: "You are not ready for the Black Belt.
Return in one year."

As the student kneels before his master a year later, he is again
asked the question, "What is the true meaning of the Black Belt?"

"A symbol of distinction and the highest achievement in our art,"
the young man responds.

Again the master waits for more. Still unsatisfied, he says once
more: "You are not ready for the Black Belt. Return in one year."

A year later the student kneels before his sensei and hears the
question, "What is the true meaning of the Black Belt?"

This time he answers, "The Black Belt represents not the end, but
the beginning, the start of a never-ending journey of discipline,
work and the pursuit of an ever-higher standard."

"Yes," says the master. "You are now ready to receive the Black
Belt and begin your work."

You may not be hoping for a Black Belt, but you might be at a
crucial point. Maybe you're facing a life change, perhaps even a
painful one. Or maybe you are awaiting something you have worked
hard to achieve  -- graduation, a new job, a promotion, or even
retirement.

All wise people see that changes can be new beginnings. Change
need not be feared. And neither should we be looking for a
permanent resting place, for a full and happy life is never
stagnant.

Can you affirm that the change you face represents, not just an
ending, but a new beginning in your life's journey? If so, you
may be ready to move forward.
Steve Goodier

Just like our Basic text tells us at the end of the reading in the 12 step,
"We do recover to live clean and happy lives. Welcome to N.A.
The steps do not end here. The steps are a new beginning.

I Wear a Mask

Living in a false world forces me
to wear a mask  of sorts
I choose to wear a transparent mask
I wear it, not so  people cannot see me
but so I can see them
and the falseness they  embrace

It allows me to see through their masks
Into the  realness underneath
To peel back the superficial layers
Revealing  the depth within
Looking with courage beyond the surface
I see  beyond the world's masquerade

It's best to stand naked in  truth
than clothed in false finery
At least now the eyes of my heart  are opened
Now I can see.

I Was Once New

One day I was once new
That's when I got honest and true
That was the day I had made my start
God had blessed me
He gave me a new heart
That's when I came through recoveries door
I liked what I had heard and wanted more
Take it easy keep is simple you told me
It takes hard work to break free
Using substance
Was just a small part
We had to change
Admit down in our heart
At last I there was hope
For me and you
We have to get honest
Remain humble and true
So if your down
You want to stop
We will help you to the top
Here take our hand
We will help you
To understand
It took time
For you to get here
It will take time
To overcome fear
I was new when I made my stand
You helped me and offered me your hand

She chooses to take the money and leave; she chooses dishonesty.
"It's amazing what people will sell for a few dollars," the angel comments.
She sold her character for $9.
Every day, life offers us choices.
We are invited to experience Love's presence.
