I'm so Grateful
I'm so grateful that GOD
has delivered me from drugs,
and now I go to NA meetings
where I receive lots of hugs.
I'm so grateful today that money
does not burn a hole in my hands,
and I no longer run to give it to the drug man.
I'm so grateful to have a roof over my head,
life on the other side, I would probably be dead.
I'm so grateful to have a network of recovering friends,
who I know will be with me till the end.
I'm so grateful to have GOD in my heart,
for he has given me a brand new start,
I'm so grateful for my pastor at church,
because listening to him share
the words of God I have learned so much.
I'm so grateful to now be singing in the choir,
and it's all due to my higher power.
I'm so grateful because life on this side is so good,
Although I'd never thought I could do it,
my family always knew that I could.
I'm so grateful that recovery allows me to share
my experiences, hopes and strength with others,
and by doing so I'm allowed to go further.
I'm so grateful that God wakes me
every morning with "Peace of mind,"
because finally I left my other life behind
I'm so grateful that I know who I am and why I'm here,
God has also delivered me from fear
I'm so grateful to finally have a normal life,
although it's times that it's hard,
but with GOD living in my Heart, Mind and Soul
I will continue to do my part.

Just For Today
October 24 Responsibility
"We are not responsible for our disease, only for our recovery
As we begin to apply what we have learned, our lives begin to
change for the better" Basic Text, p.88
The further we go in recovery, the less we avoid responsibility for
ourselves and our actions. By applying the principles of the Narcotics
Anonymous program, we are able to change our lives. Our existence takes
on new meaning as we accept responsibility and the freedom of choice
responsibility implies. We do not take recovery for granted.
We take responsibility for our recovery by working the Twelve Steps
with a sponsor. We go to meetings regularly and share with the
newcomer what was freely given to us: the gift of recovery. We become
involved with our home group and accept responsibility for our part in
sharing recovery with the still- suffering addict. As we learn how to
effectively practice spiritual principles in all areas of our lives, the
quality
of our lives improves.
Just for today: Using the spiritual tools I've gained in recovery, I am
willing and able to make responsible choices.

FIXING ME, NOT YOU
If somebody hurts us and we are sore, we are in the wrong also.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 90
What a freedom I felt when this passage was pointed out to me! Suddenly I
saw that I could do something about my anger, I could fix me, instead of
trying to fix them. I believe that there are no exceptions to the
axiom. When I am angry, my anger is always self-centered. I must keep
reminding myself that I am human, that I am doing the best I can, even when
that best is sometimes poor. So I ask God to remove my anger and truly set
me free.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden / October 24th
A.A. Thought for the Day
Fourth, I have turned to a Power greater than myself.
Thank God, I am no longer at the center of the universe.
All the world does not revolve around me any longer.
I am only one among many. I have a Father in heaven
and I am only one of His children and a small one at that.
But I can depend on Him to show me what to do and to
give me the strength to do it. I am on the Way and the
whole power of the universe is behind me when I do the
right thing. I do not have to depend entirely on myself
any longer. With God, I can face anything. Is my life in
the hands of God?
Meditation for the Day
The grace of God is an assurance against all evil. It holds
out security to the believing soul. The grace of God means
safety in the midst of evil. You can be kept unspotted by
the world through the power of His grace. You can have a
new life of power. But only in close contact with the grace
of God is its power realized. In order to renew it and
benefit from it, you must have daily quiet communion with
God, so that the power of His grace will come unhindered
into your soul.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may be kept from evil by the grace of God.
I pray that henceforth I will try to keep myself more
unspotted by the world.

Opening Ourselves to Love
Open ourselves to the love that is available to us.
We do not have to limit our sources of love. God and the Universe have an
unlimited supply of what we need, including love.
When we are open to receiving love, we will begin to receive it. It may come
from the most surprising places, including from within us.
We will be open to and aware of the love that is and has been there for us
all along. We will feel and appreciate the love from friends. We will notice
and enjoy the love that comes to us from family.
We will be ready to receive love in our special love relationships too. We
do not have to accept love from unsafe people - people who will exploit us
or with whom we don't want to have relationships.
But there is plenty of good love available - love that heals our heart,
meets our needs, and makes our spirit sing.
We have denied ourselves too long. We have been martyrs too long. We have
given so much and allowed ourselves to receive too little. We have paid our
dues. It is time to continue the chain of giving and receiving by allowing
ourselves to receive.
Today, I will open myself to the love that is coming to me from the
Universe. I will accept it and enjoy it when it comes.

Let Me Help You Remember Alan Cohen
While exiting a grocery store I noticed an unusual poster
announcing, "You already know how to meditate. Let me help
you remember." Ah, what an empowering offer, I thought‹
a sharp contrast to the many advertisements for products
and services that tell us that we are stupid or broken and
need intelligence or fixing. How wonderful it feels‹and how
powerfully it works‹to regard ourselves and each other as
innately wise, capable of accomplishing anything we choose,
greater than any task or challenge before us. Wouldn't you
like to be regarded as magnificent?
A few years ago I signed up for a "You Fly" airplane flight
which promised that I would be able to take the stick of a
small airplane and control the plane myself. Flying an airplane
had been one of my long-time dreams, so I eagerly registered
for the flight, a three-hour jaunt over three Hawaiian islands.
What a treat, I imagined, to be in charge of the aircraft for a
few minutes in mid-air.
On the appointed day I drove to the commuter terminal at
the Maui airport, where I met the pilot, Scott. I informed Scott
that I had never piloted a plane before, and he told me that would
be no problem. Scott guided me out on the tarmac to a small
twin-engine Cessna, and he gave me a brief rundown about the
various instruments on the control panel. Scott strapped himself
into the seat next to mine and told me, "Now here's how you take off..."
Excuse me, I thought, I don't remember the advertisement
saying anything about taking off. I started to open my mouth to say,
"Perhaps you didn't hear me say that I've never flown before." But
when I looked over at Scott he was on the radio setting up our takeoff
with the control tower. Suddenly I understood what was happening: he
thought I could do it. To Scott, taking off was not too much to ask of
me. So, in spite of my hesitation, I decided to keep my mouth shut. I
decided that if I had a choice between me being right about my inability
or Scott being right about my ability, I would rather choose his opinion.
I would rather fulfill his expectations of my greatness than my
expectations of my ineptitude. I decided to believe in his belief.
I followed Scott's careful instructions, and within a few minutes
we were airborne.
I flew the airplane nearly three hours that day. I flew over the
dramatic north shore of Maui, past the thousand-foot sweeping
verdant cliffs of Molokai, across the golden sand beaches of Lanai,
then over whales and dolphins cavorting in the rich blue ocean channel
back to Maui. There we buzzed my house and made our way back to
the airport. For nearly all that time I controlled the airplane, with
Scott stepping in occasionally to make minor corrections. Eventually
my nervousness had given way to exhilaration, and my doubts yielded
to confidence. As we approached the airport, Scott surprised me again.
"Now here's how you land," he told me in a nonchalant way. Now wait just
a minute, I felt like saying, à la Barney Fife. Taking off and flying is one
thing, but landing‹now that's outright dangerous. Then I remembered a
lesson from one of my favorite flyers, Richard Bach, who suggested, "
Argue for your limits, and sure enough they're yours." I kept my mouth
shut. As I guided us in according to Scott's instructions, the Cessna was
rocked by a gust of wind. "Sure is windy here," Scott laughed. "I've
seen pilots who got their license on the mainland come here and try to
deal with these trade winds, and realize they didn't really know how to
land." Yow! Okay, just breathe, I thought. I kept following Scott's
direction until he took over the stick just before touchdown. As I left
the airport that day, I felt higher than our flight. Scott's belief in me
brought out the best in me. The airplane flight was three hours, the
lesson was for a lifetime.
Then I remembered the powerful film Stand and Deliver, in which
James Edward Olmos dramatized the true story or Jaime Escalente,
a math teacher who went into the Los Angeles barrios and decided to
teach calculus to some of the school's lowest-functioning students.
When the math department chairwoman criticized Jaime, he boldly
told her, "The students will live up to the teacher's expectations!"
Everyone in Jaime's class went on to pass the state calculus test. At
any given moment we have two voices in our head: one which tells us we
can't, and another which tells us we can. Which will prove true? The
one we give the most attention to. The one we act on. The one we
make a stand for.
You already know how to be magnificent. Let me help you remember.

Our Greatest Addiction
The master addiction is control.
It is not lack of courage that keeps us from moving forward,
as most people think; it is the fear of losing control.
The Spiritual Warrior can overcome addictions by surrendering control
and confronting inner enemies by embracing them like ones own children
who are misguided and looking for loving discipline
from the one who has control.
By being the master of acceptance, cooperation,
understanding, empathy and enthusiasm.
John-Roger
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*Easy Does It*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Be patient. God isn't finished with me yet.
"Patience is our compassion for the distance between what we
are now and what we know we can be. Because we have such fertile
imaginations, we have already formed a mental image of what the
"perfect, healthy, positively focusing" person "should" be. You may
have formed such an image, and you also may have cast yourself as
the star of the production. Bravo! But, if you're putting undue
pressure on yourself to achieve these goals of perfection, health
and positivity ~ impatience has crept in.
Relax. Life is a lifelong journey! You'll never get out of it alive.
You're not finished with yourself and never will be. I've yet to meet
a person who has declared, "I'm done!" Humans have desires, dreams
and goals beyond their current reality, no matter how magnificent that
reality might be. It's part of the human condition.
Realize, then, that the journey from here to there will never be
completed. Such is life. Have compassion for the distance between
where you are and where you're going next. (Where you are now,
remember, is the goal of a former moment in time.) Patience is a great
prescription for enjoying life. When you learn patience with yourself,
it's easy to extend it to others. Realize that, right now, everything is
the way it "should" be, and when later comes, everything will be
"perfect" then, too."

What She Doesn't Know
By Kate Reder
My friend has a problem, and sometimes I feel like I'm
the only one who notices her when she's lost and she's
tormented and she's alone in the world. And when she's
high, she comes to me and she tells me what she's done,
whether it's speed or cocaine or something bigger and
faster, something harder and louder, something else that
takes the person I laugh with and depend on away.
She is ripping herself away from her truth, and the
only way I can reach her is to let her know that I care
about her. All I can do is listen to her babble when she's
high, and weep when she's coming down, because I can't fix
her. All I can be is a friend to her until she realizes she
has a problem, until she stops running from her daytime
self to the lure of things that make her worries rest. I
can't make her stop. So it's been hard, to have her pass
out and the line go dead. To have her come to my house
running on speed, not to be with me, but so that she
doesn't get caught.
It is my right to help her. And to point out to her
how strong she is, how real and breathing and clear she is
to me, and to everyone. Because she is calling for help but
doesn't know it yet. She is yelling and swallowing her
tears, because somewhere she knows that she can't keep
packing herself away. Some time this anger or fury or
sadness will find her, and she needs to stand in its
torrential downpour and get filled by it, because somewhere
inside her she is empty. I can't be her mother, and I can't
be with her all the time, telling her what she can put in
her body and what she can't. So she has gotten lost
somewhere in the deep end, and I can't pull her out, but I
can show her how she can do it herself.
I am watching her, and I am hugging her and trying to
remind her of the countless reasons why I am so much better
from knowing her. I can listen to her when she needs me,
and when she doesn't. I can let her know that, no matter
what she does, she is my friend, and nothing will change
that. I can take a step back and see what's taking parts of
her away. I can encourage her to answer honestly when I ask
how she is. I can remind her about moderation. I can point
out the people who love her. I can show her how much she
needs to stop for herself. I can be a positive influence on
her. I can listen to her when her voice hints of this thing
that she is missing and can't find. She needs to see for
herself that her daytime self is alive and beating and
multicolored. I can help her remember what her life was
like before the dealers and the midnight fixes. I can help
her stand tall and strong, on feet and legs and ankles she
trusts. I can help her see that life is not about three-
hour solutions that make her wake up feeling dead. I can be
someone safe to her. I can care about her so much that I
point her to the exit and hold her hand as she gets there.
My friend has a problem and I am helping her. I am
listening and I am talking, and I am working with her, and
I am learning how to be the best to her. I have unshakable
confidence in her, and I know that she can stand where she
is and she can stop. I can be the person she turns to,
because she can't see right now that she can turn to
herself. She can't see it yet, but soon.

Can¹t Afford It
Everything¹s expensive these days
especially paying attention
to what hurts
It¹s costly to look with compassion and care
many say they can¹t afford it
especially if what is required
is not money
There¹s no window shopping allowed
a cursory look will not suffice
After all, what¹s the point of going there
if you¹re not going to do something about it?
Might as well stay home
safe in your denial
It¹s hard to incur the high cost of pride
by letting complacency fall off
the shoulders like a snug warm coat
Security and safety are hard to come by these days
Doesn¹t matter if they come wrapped in a thin false shell
It costs dearly to look at a wound
trying-to-be-forgotten
which, when transmuted
only ends up in negative behaviours:
Denial and cold walls
A slow death from not being touched
A dying wrapped around the heart
What good if you gain the world but lose your own soul?
Is that a price you can afford?
