I am learning to trust my instincts and move away
from unpleasant and stressful people, places and things.
I no longer have to stay in situations

It Was Time

The time was right for me to quit
Who would have thought I could do it
Everyone said it could be done
Now I sat in rooms of joy and fun
They told me I could follow steps
Yes a new spiritual life, could be kept

There we went to learn a new
Higher Power awareness grew
Recovery was the way to live
Everyday we learned to give

Eternally, we are grateful

Just For Today
March 6                            Rationalizing Away Our Recovery

"As a result of the Twelve Steps, I'm not able to hold on to old ways
of deceiving myself"        Basic Text, p. 176

We all rationalize. Sometimes we know we are rationalizing, admit we
are rationalizing, yet continue to behave according to our
rationalizations! Recovery can become very painful when we decide
that, for one reason or another, the simple principles of the program
don't apply to us.

With the help of our sponsor and others in NA, we can begin to look
at the excuses we use for our behavior. Do we find that some
principles just don't apply to us? Do we believe that we know more
than everyone else in Narcotics Anonymous, even those who have
been clean for many years? What makes us think that we're so
special?

There is no doubt, we can successfully rationalize our way through
part of our recovery. But, eventually, we must squarely face the truth
and start acting accordingly. The principles in the Twelve Steps guide
us to a new life in recovery. There is little room for rationalization
there.

Just for today: : I cannot work the steps and also continue deceiving
myself. I will examine my thinking for rationalizations, reveal them to
my sponsor, and be rid of them.

A Thankful Heart

I try to hold fast to the truth that a full and thankful heart
cannot entertain great conceits.  When brimming with gratitude, one's
heartbeat must surely result in outgoing love, the finest emotion that we
can ever know.
AS BILL SEES IT, p.  37

My sponsor told me that I should be a grateful alcoholic and always
have "an attitude of gratitude" -- that gratitude was the basic ingredient
of humility, that humility was the basic ingredient of anonymity and that
"anonymity was the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever
reminding us to place principles before personalities." As a result of this
guidance, I start every morning on my knees, thanking God for three
things: I'm alive, I'm sober, and I'm a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Then I try to live an "attitude of gratitude" and thoroughly enjoy another
twenty-four hours of the A.A. way of life.  A.A. is not something I joined;
it's something I live.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ March 6th

A.A. Thought for the Day

In A.A. we must surrender, give up, admit that
we're helpless. We surrender our lives to God
and ask Him for help. When He knows that
we're ready, He gives us by His grace the free
gift of sobriety. And we can't take any credit
for having stopped drinking, because we didn't
do it by our own willpower. There's no place for
pride or boasting. We can only be grateful to
God for doing for us what we could never do for
ourselves. Do I believe that God has made me a
free gift of the strength to stay sober?

Meditation for the Day

I must work for God, with God, and through God's
help. By helping to bring about a true fellowship of
human beings, I am working for God. I am also
working with God because this is the way God works,
and He is with me when I am doing such work. I
cannot do good work, however, without God's help.
In the final analysis, it is through the grace of God
that any real change in human personality takes
place. I have to rely on God's power, and anything
I accomplish is through His help.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may work for God and with God. I pray
that I may be used to change human personalities
through God's help.

Today's Thought
MARCH 06

You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Melody Beattie©

Peace

Anxiety is often our first reaction to conflict, problems, or even
our own fears. In those moments, detaching and getting peaceful
may seem disloyal or apathetic. We think: If I really care, Ill worry;
if this is really important to me, I must stay upset. We convince
ourselves that outcomes will be positively affected by the amount
of time we spend worrying.

Our best problem solving resource is peace. Solutions arise
easily and naturally out of a peaceful state. Often, fear and anxiety
block solutions. Anxiety gives power to the problem, not the
solution. It does not help to harbor turmoil. It does not help.

Peace is available if we choose it. In spite of chaos and unsolved
problems around us, all is well. Things will work out. We can
surround ourselves with the resources of the Universe: water, earth,
a sunset, a walk, a prayer, a friend. We can relax and let ourselves
feel peace.

Today, I will let go of my need to stay in turmoil. I will cultivate peace
and trust that timely solutions and goodness will arise naturally and
harmoniously out of the wellspring of peace. I will consciously let go
and
let God.

Fear - Faith - Wisdom - Love
Overcoming Fear

by Robert Elias Najemy

Faith in the Divine

Faith in God can be a great help in confronting any danger, real
or imaginary. When we believe in a benign Divine Being whose
presence and power permeates the universe, we feel protected.

When we believe all that happens is in some way controlled or
allowed by wise and just Universal Laws, then we have faith that
even seemingly accidental and unjust events have some higher
purpose, and thus a higher justice, even when we are not able to
understand it.

This is a matter of faith, which means we believe in a power or
higher law that we cannot perceive or prove exists.  If we could
see the divine or its laws, we would call this knowledge instead
of faith.

Faith and knowledge are the ultimate solutions to fear. No one
can guarantee that something what we fear will not happen. It is
probably very unlikely, but the possibility is always there.

Thus, the ultimate solution to fear is positive thinking:

a.  A belief that all will turn out well.

b. But at the same time, we know that whatever happens will be
the best possible solution for our growth process.

c. And that we do have the power to handle it.

The situations we fear offer us an opportunity to grow stronger
and more self-confident. Faith in a Divine Justice allows us to
enter openly into every situation knowing that we will encounter
only what serves our own evolutionary process, whether it be
pleasant or unpleasant.

Guilt and Fear

Some of us who are ridden with unreasonable fears may be
suffering from subconscious guilt. Often our fear is based on
the belief that we will be punished in some way for "sins." We
have been programmed to believe that we are not pure or good,
and that because of this, we have lost divine protection and
that we might be punished. Thus, guilt leads to fear.

Conversely, recognizing our inner divine nature and our innate
oneness with the universe will allow us to experience inner
security.

Wisdom

By practicing spiritual knowledge or discrimination between our
Selves and our minds, we can observe fear functioning on its
own. The idea here is that since we can observe the mind and
comment on its activity, obviously, we cannot be the mind, but
rather some higher entity that is observing it.
Thus, we can see that it is not our true Self that is expressing
fear, but the mind, which is only an organ or instrument. We can
watch the mind, the imagination and the whole passing drama of
our lives as a witness.

We can reaffirm,
"I am not this body.
I am not this mind.
I am not this fear.
I am the witness of all this."

Those who believe so can add,
"I am a soul in union with all other souls and with God."

When we begin to feel the truth of these statements, we no
longer fear others, because there are no others. We realize our
oneness with all. We feel a loving union and thus security with
all.

The fear created by the cut umbilical cord and the feeling of
separateness is removed, because a spiritual umbilical cord has
been reestablished to the all Creation.

Pure Love

The development of pure love is also an ultimate solution for
fear. We cannot fear what we love. Love is based on unity and
fear on alienation - separateness.

St. John the Evangelist wrote in one of his letters, "There is
no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear. So then, love
has not been made perfect in anyone who is afraid?"

Love and understanding walk together hand in hand. We love when
we understand others, and we understand when we love. When we
are filled with love for all, we will not feel isolated and
therefore intimidated by our environment.

Many children and young animals feel this loving union with
their environment, having not yet learned fearful reactions.  A
dog, cat, snake and lion all growing up together from infancy
would feel no threat from, or fear of, each other.

This reminds me of a true story told to me by a friend. He was
hiking in the mountains of Colorado and began repeating a prayer
as he walked. The more he repeated the prayer, the happier and
more in love he was with all he saw around him.

He began running down the path in ecstasy feeling unity with all
around him. As he turned a bend in the path, he found himself
face to face with a mountain lion only two meters away.

He looked into the lions eyes and said with love, "Do not be
afraid, I will not harm you."

He could not feel fear in his state of love and unity.

The lion turned and walked off.

Ugly The Cat

Everyone in the apartment complex I lived in knew who Ugly was.
Ugly was the resident tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world:
fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love.

The combination of these things combined with a life spent outside
had their effect on Ugly. To start with, he had only one eye
and where the other should have been was a hole. He was also
missing his ear on the same side, his left foot appeared to have
been badly broken at one time, and had healed at an unnatural angle,
making him look like he was always turning the corner. Ugly would
have been a dark gray tabby, striped type, except for the sores
covering his head, neck, and even his shoulders
Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction.
"That's one UGLY cat!!!"

All the children were warned not to touch him,
the adults threw rocks at him, hosed him down,
squirted him when he tried to come in their homes,
or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave.
Ugly always had the same reaction.

If you turned the hose on him, he would stand there,
getting soaked until you gave up and quit.
If you threw things at him,
he would curl his lanky body around your feet in forgiveness.
Whenever he spied children, he would come running,
meowing frantically and bump his head against their hands,
begging for their love.

If you ever picked him up he would immediately begin
suckling on your shirt, earrings, whatever he could find.
One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor's dogs.
They did not respond kindly, and Ugly was badly mauled.
I tried to rush to his aid.
By the time I got to where he was laying,
it was apparent Ugly's sad life was almost at an end.
As I picked him up and tried to carry him home,
I could hear him wheezing and gasping, and could feel him struggling.
It must be hurting him terribly, I thought.
Then I felt a familiar tugging, sucking sensation on my ear.
Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying,
was trying to suckle my ear.
I pulled him closer to me, and he bumped the palm of my hand
with his head, then he turned his one golden eye towards me,
and I could hear the distinct sound of purring.

Even in the greatest pain, that ugly battled scarred cat
was asking only for a little affection, perhaps some compassion.
At that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful,
loving creature I had ever seen.
Never once did he try to bite or scratch me,
try to get away from me, or struggle in any way.
Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.

Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside,
but I sat and held him for a long time afterwards,
thinking about how one scarred, deformed little stray
could so alter my opinion about what it means
to have true pureness of spirit,
to love so totally and truly.
Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion
than a thousand books, lectures, or talk show specials ever could,
and for that I will always be thankful.
He had been scarred on the outside,
but I was scarred on the inside,
and it was time for me to move on
and learn to love truly and deeply.
To give my total to those I cared for.
Many people want to be richer,
more successful, well liked, beautiful, but for me...
I will always try to be Ugly.

Harmony

As I sit beside the fire and dream,
of things gone by and things never seen
my mind alone, my spirit weak
I drift in and out of sleep
I wonder of loves lost and hopes unmet,
of days passed and dates unkept.

A voice inside my head, tells me to think,
of those who love me still
and maybe of  those that always will.
The dreams I loved have been and gone
never no more to look upon

For reasons known only to me,
I decide to let the bottle be
and see the world as she really is.
the beauty, the warmth, the sorrow the pain.
lord please make me whole again.

I pray for guidance on the morn of each new day
and thanks at the end of a sober day.
As I now have come to believe
of that which  before I could not conceive
look around you, and you too will see,
the  total love and harmony.

A Little Walk

I think it would be wonderful
to take a little walk
in someone else's moccasins
while we exchange in talk
to understand just how they feel
and why they're who they are
a little walk is all it takes
we need not travel far
just standing in their moccasins
would open up our eyes
to why one does the things they do
to why one laughs or cries
compassion would encompass us
respect and love we'd share
we'd know each heart as they are known
with overwhelming care
so pray to take this little walk
in someone else's shoes
never passing judgment
for the path that they may choose

The Cycle of Life

She was born alone in poverty
No bed on which to lie,
Her dad a drunken abuser,
She hung her head to cry.
At age fourteen, a pretty girl,
She grew to like the boys.
She liked to drink the beer they bought,
She loved their fancy toys.
She married much too young,
And at fifteen she had a son.
Her drunken career was started then,
A battle never won.
The party never seemed to stop,
She could not be a wife.
The abuse her dad had put her through,
Had ruined her pitiful life.
I was born alone in poverty,
My mother's life was gone.
I hated all the things I saw,
The wicked seeds were sown.
It wasn't very long, before,
I, too, began to drink.
I didn't have to face my life,
I didn't have to think.
A world of sorrow hidden here,
A life so hard to see,
Till one day when it happened,
I could face reality.
It wasn't long ago that
He became my newfound Friend.
I opened up my heart ,
And I began to let Him in.
My life changed so completely,
I'm so grateful to be free!
I live a sober life today,
The cycle stopped with me!
