Today I have the courage to own my own unhappiness,
daring to look within to discover its source.
Today I treat myself as a friend, with gentleness and acceptance.

Family Found Among Strangers
Lost and alone,
Friends and family gone,
I was drowning in self pity,
Self loathing eating away at my soul.
My family long since given up on the wreck that I had become.
My world shattered with the simple decree of a Judge,
Ordered to attend 13 weeks, meetings of AA.
I walked into that room, head bent in shame.
Lost and alone no where to turn no one to turn to.
Then a stranger held out her had and bade me welcome.
Surely if she knew she would not welcome me I thought.
That first night I listened to these strangers
and found myself in each of them.
And now through each struggle each craving
every high and every low I know where to go
I found myself in these rooms,
and I found a family among strangers

Just For Today
February 23 Messages and Messengers
"Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever
reminding us to place principles before personalities."
Tradition Twelve
The Twelfth Tradition reminds us of the importance of putting
"principles before personalities:' In recovery meetings, this
might be paraphrased, "don't shoot the messenger!' We often
get the message confused with the messenger, and negate
what someone shares at a meeting because we have
personality conflicts with the person speaking.
If we are having problems with what certain people have to
share at meetings, we might want to seek the guidance of our
sponsor. Our sponsor can help us concentrate on what's being
said rather than who's saying it. Our sponsor can also help us
address the resentments that may be keeping us from
acknowledging the value of some particular person's recovery
experience. It is surprising how much more we can get out of
meetings when we allow ourselves to do as our Twelfth
Tradition suggests, focusing on recovery principles rather
than personalities.
Just for today: I will practice the principle of anonymity in today's
NA meeting. I will focus on the message of recovery, not the
personality of the messenger. pg. 55

We Can't Think Our Way Sober
To the intellectually self-sufficient man or woman, many A.A.'s can say,
"Yes, we were like you -- far too smart for our own good . . . Secretly,
we felt we could float above the rest of the folks on our brain power
alone."
AS BILL SEES IT, p. 60
Even the most brilliant mind is no defense against the disease of
alcoholism. I can't think my way sober. I try to remember that
intelligence is a God-given attribute that I may use, a joy -- like having
a talent for dancing or drawing or carpentry. It does not make me better
than anyone else, and it is not a particularly reliable tool for recovery,
for it is a power greater than myself who will restore me to sanity -- not
a high IQ or a college degree.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden / February 23rd
A.A. Thought for the Day
Besides our jobs, our families, our friends, and our
sobriety, we have something else that many of us
found through A.A. That's faith in a Power greater
than ourselves, to which we can turn for help: faith
in that Divine Principle in the universe which we call
God and which is on our side as long as we do the right
thing. There have been many days in the past when,
if we had taken an inventory, we'd have found ourselves
very much in the red, without sobriety, and therefore
without jobs, families, friends, or faith in God. We
now have these things because we're sober. Do I
make one resolution every day of my life to stay sober?
Meditation for the Day
Love the busy life. It is a joy filled life. Take your fill
of joy in the spring. Live outdoors whenever possible.
Sun and air are nature's great healing forces. That
inward joy changes poisoned blood into a pure, healthy,
life giving flow. But never forget that the real healing
of the spirit comes from within, from the close, loving
contact of your spirit with God's spirit. Keep in close
communion with God's spirit day by day.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may learn to live the abundant life. I pray
that I may enjoy a close contact with God this day and be
glad in it.

Today's Thought
FEBRUARY 23
You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Strength
We don't always have to be strong to be strong. Sometimes,
our strength is expressed in being vulnerable. Sometimes,
we need to fall apart to regroup and stay on track.
We all have days when we cannot push any harder, cannot
hold back self doubt, cannot stop focusing on fear, cannot be
strong.
There are days when we cannot focus on being responsible.
Occasionally we don't want to get out of our pajamas.
Sometimes, we cry in front of people. We expose our tiredness,
irritability, or anger.
Those days are okay. They are just okay.
Part of taking care of ourselves means we give ourselves
permission to "fall apart" when we need to. We do not have to
be perpetual towers of strength. We are strong. We have
proven that. Our strength will continue if we allow ourselves
the courage to feel scared, weak, and vulnerable when we
need to experience those feelings.
Today, God, help me to know that it is okay to allow myself to
be human. Help me not to feel guilty or punish myself when
I need to "fall apart."

The Still Small Voice
Often, it seems, we come upon a problem that takes all our strength to even
begin to figure how to solve it.
As time goes on, it appears that every problem we encounter becomes more
difficult than the previous one.
How can we proceed when it appears that the world is crashing all around?
What choices do we make? Where do we go for help? How do we cope? What
road do we choose? Obviously, Yogi Berra's statement, "When you come to a
fork in the road, take it" does not bring us great comfort at such times.
Some of us analyze the facts and study the intricacies of the problem. This
is good, but analysis is not always enough. Then again, we may not and
cannot know all the facts. Analysis alone may lead to the "paralysis of
analysis." And facts may not be facts after all. Many of them may just be
opinions.
So how do we deal with our most troubling challenges? By using a
combination of methods and means. Remember, there are only three types of
problems in life: money, health and relationship. Name any problem you have
and, if you look closely, you'd see that it falls under one or more of
these.
Within each and every one of us is a guidance mechanism that always points
the way to overcome challenges. It doesn't matter whether the problem you
are facing is large or small. It really is not important whether it's a
problem of money, health, relationship or a combination of these. The first
thing to realize is that you are more powerful than any problem that comes
your way.
You came into this world equipped with all the tools necessary to solve all
your problems. Deep within us is a place that's not affected by problems as
we see them. Way, way deep in our hearts and souls is the perfect solution
to any problem that may come our way. All we have to do is work with the
guidance mechanism that we all have.
To start accessing this mechanism, the first requirement is that we become
quiet. All of us keep up a lively, running dialogue in our heads. We have
to quiet the dialogue for at least a short while so we can receive
information from the deepest part of our souls. Then the voice of intuition
will speak to us.
A number of times a day, choose a few minutes to be quiet. By being quiet,
what I am really saying is to turn down the volume of your self-talk. It
won't entirely go away, but it would become quiet enough so that we could
hear the "still small voice" of our inner-sense whispering guidance to us.
Listen intently to the messages you're getting from your inner-self. Do not
force it or try to interpret what you're hearing. Just listen with an open
mind. At first, it'll seem a bit difficult to do this. But as you
practice, it will become much easier. And as it becomes easier, it'll
become more useful.
The solutions to all your problems exist right now. The answers are already
there. Just listen for them in the quietness of your being and they will
come to you -- perhaps not immediately, but very soon. And trust the
process; it works much better and faster when you trust it.
Keep an open mind. Don't argue or analyze the messages you get from your
intuition. Sometimes the message may not make sense right away. Just go on
with your daily work and you'll start finding that you get hunches about
what is troubling you most. Follow your hunches. They are God's messengers
trying to lead you to your greatest good.
If you practice this seemingly simple exercise, you would find that guidance
comes to you in many forms and in many ways. The answer to your problem may
come to you while you're taking a shower, driving to the supermarket,
walking the dog or even in your sleep as a dream.
You may even find answers in a song on the radio, the words on a billboard
or a phone call from a friend. The universe has all the answers to our
problems. Be guided by the great wisdom within you. Trust yourself and
trust your God. You are the universe's special project and you cannot fail.

There Are No Condoms For The Heart
Dr. Paul C. Wanio
"To isolate or split off the sexual side of your being from
the rest of yourself so that you might partake in casual sex,
is not only degrading and limiting, it is psychologically unhealthy.
By behaving in an intimate manner without actually being intimate,
you create a 'psychic contradiction.' You allow someone to get
extremely close to you physically, without being psychologically
prepared for the experience. In fact, it is not possible to be
prepared. To really know someone is a highly developed skill that
does not occur in one week or month, nor is it merely dependent
upon time. It requires in-depth awareness, emotional sharing,
honest communication, trust and non-defensiveness.
Though sex can express intimacy, it can also substitute for it.
We can learn to perform great sex without ever sharing or
knowing ourselves. And, without an intimate and deeply personal
knowledge of one another, love cannot exist. You can place a
condom around a penis, but you cannot place one around your mind.
Safety on a human level requires trust, respect, commitment and
love. Remember, there are no condoms for the heart.
We all hunger to be emotionally visible to one another, yet at
the same time, feel threatened by it. So we try to 'have our cake
and eat it, too.' We remove our clothes and imagine that we are
really exposing ourselves. If only it were that easy. Once the
eventual disappointment of impersonal sex sets in, it's on to the
next fix to bring back the feeling of the illusory state of
communion. Mistrust, defensiveness and 'game playing' between
the sexes largely takes place because casual sex has become an
option. The harm in casual sex is that the concept itself creates
mistrust. How would you feel if your mate said to you after an
affair, 'Hey it was only sex, don't worry.' Would you be relieved?
Hardly. Because you'd know that even if the sex was able to be
twisted into something impersonal, the intimate aspects of this
loving act could potentially arise to further threaten your
relationship. If sex is so casual, it would be as silly to object to
an affair as objecting to shaking hands.
Once you develop the ability to find fulfillment in a committed,
monogamous relationship, you will wonder how you could settle for
anything less. And, you won't."

The Gift of the Gods
It was a warm summer day when the gods placed it in her
hands. She trembled with emotion as she saw how fragile it
appeared. This was a very special gift the gods were
entrusting to her. A gift that would one day belong to the
world. Until then, they instructed her, she was to be its
guardian and protector. The woman said she understood and
reverently took it home, determined to live up to the faith
the gods had placed in her.
At first she barely let it out of her sight, protecting
it from anything she perceived to be harmful to its well-
being; watching with fear in her heart when it was exposed
to the environment outside of the sheltered cocoon she had
formed around it. But the woman began to realize that she
could not shelter it forever. It needed to learn to survive
the harsh elements in order to grow strong. So with gentle
care she gave it more space to grow...enough to allow it to
grow wild and untamed.
One day she became aware of how much the gift had
changed. It no longer had a look of vulnerability about it.
Now it seemed to glow with strength and steadiness, almost
as if it were developing a power within. Month after month
she watched as it became stronger and more powerful, and the
woman remembered her promise. She knew deep within her heart
that her time with the gift was nearing an end.
The inevitable day arrived when the gods came to take
the gift and present it to the world. The woman felt a deep
sadness, for she would miss its constant presence in her
life. With heartfelt gratitude she thanked the gods for
allowing her the privilege of watching over the precious
gift for so many years. Straightening her shoulders, she
stood proud, knowing that it was, indeed, a very special
gift. One that would add to the beauty and essence of the
world around it. And the mother let her child go.

Growth Patterns
Earth grows in patterns and circular motion
matter turning to energy
returning, morphing its elements
from one to the next
from old to new
Like the Earth
We recycle from our past
what is needed today
Making usage of what
we may have thrown away
Old pains, old hurts, old things we didn’t say
Become the stuff we use
to mend ourselves each day
Earth holds no judgments, no shame
For what its past portrays
And when at last it’s my turn
my soul to put to rest
To recycle all my past days
And count up my life’s quest
Let me look and honour it well
The consequences of my acts
were mine to answer to
My regrets I know will be few
and I shall look upon my self with
No shame allowed...
Just a gentle loving gaze
