Section 3: Examine how both types of literature explore male and
female relationships
*Constantly refer back to male and female relationships.
*Comment on three poems – 2 main ones and one that you can write about
briefly. E.g. THE SUN RISING/ THE FLEA (main) and A MARRIED STATE
(brief)
*Linking sentences (to link poems to Shakespeare):
 Donne’s use of metaphor to show infatuated male and female
relationships links to….
 The resistance of the lover to give her virginity in ‘The Flea’can
be compared to….
 Romeo’s references to Juliet’s eyes being ‘….’ is very similar to
Donne’s metaphoric explanation of his own lover’s eyes…
 The idea of impulsive and irrational love is present in Romeo and
Juliet as well as….
 Male and female relationships are explored as sexual in the flea
because…This is also a theme is Romeo and Juliet when Romeo talks of
Rosaline due to….
 Furthermore, marriage is seen as negative in the play as Juliet
exclaims that marriage is an honour that ‘I dream not of’ which can be
linked to ‘A Married State’ where Phillips declares…

Use connectives to link ideas together and do not get bogged down with
feeling like you have to mention every single poem. Just concentrate
on the ones you are confident with them and CONSTANTLY link back to
MALE AND FEMALE and the link the poem has with Romeo and Juliet and
how relationships are shown there.

Vocabulary and connectives you could use in this section:
*impulsivity: to act without thinking *In contrast to…
*erratic: strange behaviour *Similarly
*irrational/ rational *To expand the previous point…
*desperation/ desire *Furthermore…
*perception: viewpoint
