Bangkok residents please check the attached phone numbers.
Get the mobile phone charged, find out where you stored the passport and
ready a backpack. Just in case.
Make the most of the "social networks" to give and receive news, this group
included.

Situation in the business district of Bangkok is beyond tensed and should
not get better in the coming days.
Has anyone news of the countryside / out of Bangkok / in the provinces ?

FRENCH NATIONALS reply back to this e-mail if needed.

See attached map of riots area.
The obvious safehavens are :
the UK embassy *inside* the red zone,
the Pathum Wanaram temple for local Thais (women + kids entry).

The obvious NO GO is towards North, which is a live fire - real bullets
shooting area.

After the army and police intervention in the centre of Bangkok,
occupied since March by anti-government protesters, the government
extended a night curfew in Bagkok until Saturday 22 may.
The attack of the business ditrict allowed the opposition leaders to
wisely surrender but hardliners got out of their stronghold and ran
wild (almost) everywhere in the city. It is then much more diffuclt to
spot them and make arrests. The Bangkok Battle indeed should end
within a few days from now.

More worrying are the news from other Thai cities in the north and
north-east, strongholds of the anti-government movement that strongly
backs the exiled former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.
Cities of Chiang Mai, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani and Khon Kaen are
under army patrols and heavy police scrutiny. As a matter of fact the
"state of emergency" allows death penalty for “terrorists”, or in
other words anyone caught carrying out acts of violence or setting
fires.

On 19 may the Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant against Thaksin
Shinawatra (kicked off by a coup in 2006). He is now an official
"terrorist" against Thailand for funding and supporting the Red Shirts
dissident movement.
