Hi all,

By now, some of you should already have received invitation emails to the 10-701 discussion / handin server. The rest should get invitations in the next few days. Let me know if you're registered for the course, but didn't get an invitation email by Sunday. Please check your spam folder to be sure, and also let me know your Andrew ID so I can generate a new invite if necessary.

Please log in soon, to check that you can do so without issues. (And please let me know about any problems you encounter, so that we can fix them before the deadline.) As we mentioned in class, we are developing this software ourselves, so please be gentle with any criticism :-) . And, save your work outside the system, just in case.

You will need to use a modern browser -- we've tested on recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and mobile Safari. If you have another browser that you'd like supported, let us know, and we'll try. (In particular, I don't own anything that can run Internet Explorer or Android's version of Chrome.)

The handin for HW1 is not open yet; I'll send another email when it is. The interface for handin will look exactly like the one for creating a new post, so have a look at that and try it out if you're curious: basically you can type text or math and attach images. Feel free to use whichever modality suits you. If you're typing text, anything that looks like \( f(x) \) will get processed as an inline equation; anything that looks like \[ f(x) \] will get processed as a displayed equation. You can use a pretty big subset of LaTeX -- see the MathJax docs for more information:

http://docs.mathjax.org/en/latest/

Formatting options for the text (outside of the math) are limited right now; more will come soon, but probably after the HW1 deadline unless there's a particularly popular request.

If you're attaching images of handwritten work, a couple of pointers and caveats. First, the images will come out looking best if you limit yourself to about 10 words per line in a single column of text. (That's about what's in a typical column of a conference paper.)

Second, you can attach multiple images to each submission (by selecting multiple files in the attach dialog, and/or by clicking "attach" multiple times). Each file is limited to about 700k to avoid swamping the server; this should be plenty for the kind of images you'll need to submit, but you might need to resize high-res bitmap images to fit under the limit.

Third, you can get the images by scanning your work with one of the copiers in Wean or GHC. These copiers will email you PDFs; you'll need to crop out the appropriate area of the PDF and save in an image format like PNG. (Most PDF previewing tools will let you do this easily.) The same can be said if you latex'd your solutions, although in this case it will probably be easier just to paste the text and equations from your latex into the post box instead of going through PDF.

Finally, if all the above methods fail, it should also work to snap a picture of your work with a cell phone. In this case, make sure that the image comes out OK before submitting it. It helps to take the photo in a well-lit room against a dark background, and to use a pen that makes a heavy line. You will probably also need to reduce the resolution and crop the picture before submitting, since cell phones typically take pictures at a way higher resolution than we need. (See the file size limit above.)

Best,
-Geoff.

Hey Geoff, I suspect you may have sent this to the wrong list...
