Hi all,

The syllabus mentions that the final paper for the course project should have a section dealing with results of our method(s) on simulated data.  If we already have actual data that we will be applying our method(s) to, is the simulated data section still required?  The syllabus seems to suggest that we need both, but that seems a bit bizarre to me.

It is not required, but highly recommended to present results on
simulated data, even if you are analyzing "real" data. The reason is
that simulated data give you an opportunity to illustrate and confirm
properties of a method. If you can't understand and predict the
behavior of your method on simulated data, there is little hope of
doing so on other data sets.
