In q4, the last letter "j" in the formula in line 2 should be a
capital "J", right?

I checked Mease and Wyner's paper Boosted Classification Trees and
Class Probability/Quantile Estimation.
In that paper, the formula on page 13 seems different from the one in
hw4. But their formula makes more sense to me. I guess there are still
some typo in hw4.

I think that the paper the question is referring to is actually "Evidence Contrary to the Statistical View of Boosting", and it gives some motivation for the model there.
