Encrusted Houseboats on the Move

All: Based upon the enclosed email string, it seems that a dozen or more houseboats were recently sold at an auction from AZ's Lake Pleasant, which is heavily infested with quagga mussels. One houseboat was intercepted this week in ID on I-84 near Boise, and it is heavily encrusted with quagga mussels. This situation is being properly handled in cooperation with ID, OR, WA & USFWS--good job!.

It is unknown to where the other houseboats are en route.

Keep a lookout.

Dave Britton and Stephen Phillips: I think this information is meritous for a west-wide alert via each of your systems.

Thanks.

Rule R657-60 requires each boater to fill out and properly display a Decontamination Certification Form in their launch vehicle prior to every launch. In Utah two such forms exist--a single-use form, which is a simple download, and a multi-use form, which requires participation in a 45 minute online orientation/certification course. Either form can be secured on UDWR's mussel web site at http://wildlife.utah.gov/mussels/form_options.php

Tom,

Do you have another contact in Arizona that is looking into the dispersal of these boats that were recently sold at auction? I just tried calling Kevin and his VM indicates that he is on an extended absence and not due to return until Friday. I feel it is important that we work together to try to warn other states that may be receiving these contaminated vessesls.

FW: Follow up

Carl,

Kevin Bergersen’s number is 623-236-7383. Since the auction site was in Arizona, their laws do apply and it would be good to coordinate enforcement. Tom was concerned that further investigation by him might jeopardize any enforcement investigation and thought it best for those with badges to discuss this issue. Tom was also confused that I was part of enforcement.

RE: Follow up

Sorry…way behind the eight ball in so many areas right now.

I called Auction Systems in Arizona concerning the “Annual Pleasant Harbor Recreational Watercraft Auction” on February 11th. I talked to a Patricia about this subject. She was somewhat helpful and I gave her boat #237 information, but we were then “mysteriously” cut off and I could not get back to her….hmmmmmm.

Anyway, I think this may be something that our LE folks should delve into. My suggestion would be that Allen contact Kevin Bergersen of our Department (…I am sure that they know each other through NASBLA) and see how AZ can assist, if we can.

I had not heard back from Tom (in AZ) – are you following up with the auction company on where the other boats went? Is sale of infested articles prohibited in AZ?

      RE: Follow up

The boat is currently stopped at the ID/OR boarder waiting for an oversize permit to transit through OR to WA. Sgt. Klein and I are trying to track down final destination and buyer to find out if they purchased more than one of these. Unlikely to get to WA until tomorrow. If we don’t hear soon from AZ auction company, may want to ready a media alert.

Rick or Glenn – are you planning any actions during the Oregon transit portion?

      Hi Tom.

Thanks to Stephen Cox’s detective work here, it looks like there’s some additional problems stemming from yesterday’s interception.

Could you possibly contact the AZ auction company and get a listing of where the other dozen boats went?? Note that many of them were still in the water when sold. This is obviously very concerning.

      Amy,

Here is the website of the Pleasant Harbor Recreational Watercraft auction, which occurred 3 weeks ago.

There were 12 house boats that were for sale this year, which could have gone anywhere. The boat we caught yesterday was #237 and was not on the list, but 12 others may be on the move.
