HW Q4.3 confusion about involving only (x_i,x_i+1) terms

for involving only (x_i,x_{i+1}) terms, is that actually we are looking for a recursive function in the format like x_{i+1}=a*x_{i}, this kind of format? If so, actually I am decomposing the p(x_{i+1}) instead of p(x) ?

Not really sure what you mean, but take the text to mean that the final answer wont have terms that are of higher order than one; i.e. involving at most (x_i,x_{i+1}).
