Rails Girls in Galway

Hi all,
following a well-established, successful [1] series of events called Rails Girls Workshops [2] , I'd like to organize one of those workshop here as well, in Galway, and
I need (~11 ) volunteers who could couch during the event.

**Do you want to be one of the couches?** It will be on the 17th and 18th of May 2013, in DERI (max 44 people, 4 per 1 couch).
You don’t need to be an hardcore expert on Rails: basic knowledge and willingness to explain is enough, keeping an upbeat and positive atmosphere through a period of 8 hours.


The aim is:
to facilitate women (even with no programming experience)  in approaching the web app development.

What the attendees will do:
will actually implement a web app using ruby on rails and the already available code online [3].

Attendees:
The attendees will be mainly women because the higher aim is to address the gender gap issue in IT (see chart attached here). Men can attend if they want, but only if invited by another woman. (I hope this will not fire critics: the gender gap "is" a problem because it hinters innovation [4] and needs to be addressed somehow)

This would not be possible without the amazing help and availability that **Brendan Smith** and (indirectly) the DERI institute have already given to me.


I will set up a website for the event as soon as I get at least 2 couches signing in.

Hi Myriam,

Thanks for posting this. I'm neither a girl nor a rails developer (yet). I agree that the gender gap in tech is something that needs addressing, and events such as this are a great step in the right direction!

I hope you get some responses and potential coaches from here. Just to clarify, are you looking for female coaches only or does gender matter for that role? I just want to clarify in case gender isn't a deciding factor...in case there may be a non-female person here who might be a good fit but may assume it's female coaches only. If that makes sense!

Keep us up to date with any developments with it anyway!

nono coaches can be either males or females: it doesn't matter. also since the use of ruby on rails is very basic, then you do not need to be an expert. What maybe matters most is the willingness to help with the welcoming atmosphere (since the event is quite a long one: 8 hours) and explaining basic programming concepts.

the 44 maximum applies to the attendees. Then I read somewhere that a good coach-attendees ratio could be 1:4 and we can have some more seats in deri (only seats, but it should be fine for the coaches). That's why indicatively there should be 11 coaches, what do you think?

Actually, if 091labs wants to become a sponsor for funding things like ads, gadgets, food (maybe more seats in case of an higher number of coaches, they could be used later in the labs as well) then it will get 

- Logo on the event website

- Table space at the event, opportunity to distribute handouts and/or swag

- A chance to speak about 091labs to the attendees for 5 minutes (we will actually do it anyway cause the lab is awesome :) )

- There will be official pictures taken that you can use afterwards

Also, I would like do whan I can to assist. I used to develop in Rails, and still do some Ruby. If you can get over the whole 'rockstar' nonsense, it's a pretty cool framework, on top of an excellent language.

we are currently recruiting volunteer coaches for the 2nd edition of Rails Girls Galway [1] (Ruby on Rails workshop). 

I've been receiving requests for another edition ever since the first one in 2013.
