yeah, bitcoin seems to be one of those great ideas that very few people
end up using. It's quite exciting...you don't need to set up an account
anywhere as such, since it's distributed p2p. When you install the
client, it connects to the network and you can send/receive bitcoins.
Then there are people 'mining' (I won't go into that, I've never really
done it, it doesn't seem worthwhile); suffice it to say that it's very
cpu/gpu intensive, but it's necessary (to a degree) to verify the
transactions.
The likes of paypal really don't want to see it succeed, and since it's
distributed, there's no official central location to get bitcoins. I
recommend bitmarket.eu though, it's run by a Polish guy living in
Ireland, and I've had successful transactions there. There's also a web
of trust on freenode IRC (#bitcoin and #bitcoin-otc).
I haven't used it in a couple of months, but if you have bitcoins, you
likely want to spend them on something. There's a list of places that
accept bitcoin here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade , lots of people
buying/selling stuff on reddit with btc:
http://www.reddit.com/r/BitMarket/ , then there's also a site called
'silk road' that's quite hard to get to (you need to use tor to get
there), and they cater for all manner of illegal goods and services
(apparently).
I hope that answers your question a bit!
