As someone who is on social media it is a surprise for me as well. I
knew something was happening but I was expecting to get notice a week
or 2 before.

I don't know if I'm being unhelpful by saying this, but I've had virtually
no notice about this (found out on Saturday night?) I guess I'm not on the
social media and all, but are we assuming that everyone attending will be?
I'd reckon that at least a week's notice would be good, preferably two or
even more, but anyone who's not "at a loose end" of a typical evening needs
more than a couple of days notice to attend anything, in case stuff needs
to be rescheduled or whatever.

Spare a thought for us "luddites" who don't tweet, plus (whatever the
relevant verb is for Google+, I don't know) or pray at the altar of
Zuckerberg. I won't launch into a rant or anything, but if social media
"knew" about this long before the rest of us, then that's a problem; if
they didn't get much advance notice either, that's a different (and
potentially bigger) problem.

If events are to be done regularly, which is absolutely necessary for us,
we'll need to give people decent warning of their arrival. It's something
to look to for the future. I can't blame Padraic with regards to the
current situation as he seems to be doing the Ignite stuff essentially
single-handed from what I can see, but for 'labs events we need to give
people reasonable notice to get good turnouts.

Interesting, Conor's post appears to be "broken" in the GMail web client. I wonder was that to do with his message or mine before it?

It has a garbled header on both email apps I've viewed it on (Windows phone and android gmail app). And the first I heard about ignite was on Thursday, but if they're going to be regular events now, then at least there's plenty of warning about the upcoming ones.
