SUBJECT: New SIFE Judging Criterion (effective 2010-2011 Program Year)
We are excited to announce that the Executive Committee of the SIFE Worldwide Board of Directors has approved a change to the overall competition judging criteria, effective immediately after the 2010 SIFE competition season (i.e. academic year ending 2011).
New SIFE Competition Judging Criterion
Considering the relevant economic, social and environmental factors, which SIFE team most effectively empowered people in need by applying business and economic concepts and an entrepreneurial approach to improve their quality of life and standard of living?
Just as the SIFE organization has continuously evolved over the past 35 years, so has the competition judging criteria. This most recent change, as was the case with past revisions to the criteria, is not intended to be a radical departure from the present or cause teams to completely start over. Although noticeably different in form, we believe that substantively this criterion provides teams the opportunity to build upon their past successes while enhancing the relevance and impact of their future projects.
The most significant difference in the new criterion is the shift from a focus on specific topics to a more broad-based focus on approach, i.e., “applying business and economic concepts and an entrepreneurial approach” along with a much greater emphasis on outcome, i.e., “improve the quality of life and standard of living.” This shift does not mean that the current topics or projects done to fulfill them are no longer applicable or won’t necessarily fit with the new criterion.
The revised criterion is simply more cause-oriented. It shifts the emphasis from individual subject matter to purpose, more clearly defining a unique space for SIFE and accentuating our core belief that business can be used to make the world a better place. This provides a clear mandate for teams while actually enhancing our programmatic approach of providing them the creative freedom and flexibility to determine how best to achieve that mandate and what specific subjects to address under the umbrella of a common purpose based on the interests of their students, the academic objectives of their university and the unique needs of their community. It also encourages teams to continually focus on not just what topic they’re addressing but what outcome they’re achieving – challenging them to continually increase the quality and impact of their projects
The new criterion also balances outcomes with the importance of the method, i.e., “empowering people in need.” Again, building on the long-standing belief within SIFE that the best way to help people in the long run is to equip them with knowledge and skills to help themselves.
Finally, and perhaps the newest idea reflected in the criterion, is the recognition that for solutions to be truly sustainable they must make sense economically and socially as well as environmentally. Teams will be asked to consider all three elements and, whenever possible, to take an integrated approach to addressing them through their projects.
The development of this criterion took more than a year and involved significant participation and input by a wide variety of constituent groups from around the world, such as SIFE staff around the world, country board chairs, and faculty advisors.
We understand that you may have additional questions or the desire for even further detail and discussion. Please be assured that SIFE is committed to working with you and your team to ensure a smooth and stress-free transition. Please remember that the revised criterion is NOT applicable to SIFE competitions in 2010 but rather takes effect thereafter; and reflected in 2011 competitions. That means that the current judging criteria will be in place for the 2010 regional and national competitions in each country as well as the 2010 SIFE World Cup in October.
This announcement is being made early in advance so as to provide you with enough notice to fully analyze the criterion and prepare your team. Beyond this initial announcement, you’ll be receiving a number of additional communications and materials, including items such as updated training materials and revised competition judging tools and forms. In addition, we will be contacting you directly to review the criterion and assist with any questions or concerns. Finally, we’ll be incorporating the new criterion as an agenda item at important events throughout this year, such as any upcoming training workshops and/or competitions, to provide the opportunity for further discussion and training.
Our goal has always been, and will remain, to provide SIFE students with the most meaningful opportunity to apply what they’re learning about business in a real world setting to improve the lives of others, while in turn developing the skills to become more effective, responsible business leaders themselves. We believe this new criterion improves our ability to achieve that goal and we hope you are as enthusiastic about the change as we are.
We look forward to working with you and your team throughout this transition and helping you take full advantage of this exciting improvement.
