IMPACT FIRST TO CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT

The Montreal Impact have become the first team this season to clinch a
playoff spot.  With
their 2-1 win over Colorado, shown on Friday night's A-League Match of the
Week, the
Impact have assured themselves at least a chance at winning the '96 League
title.
Montreal is also extremely close to repeating as regular season champions as
the Impact
stand 12 points ahead of second place Colorado.

Still fighting for the remaining three playoffs spots, Colorado, Seattle,
Vancouver,
Rochester and New York all have a chance at reaching post-season play.  In
this same
descending order, second to sixth place, each team is separated by just
three points (one
regulation win) from the team directly ahead and directly behind their
current ranking.
Vancouver is the only exception to his pattern, trailing the Sounders by
four points.

The current top four teams each have the same amount of games remaining to
play.
Expansion Rochester, just three points behind fourth place Vancouver, has
two more
games remaining than the current top four teams while New York, just three
points behind
fifth place Rochester, has one more game remaining than the current top four
teams.

Weeks 17, 18 and 19 spell out a close and exciting playoff race.  If at the
conclusion of the
regular season, two teams have the same point total in the standings, the
following tie-
breakers will apply in order:  (1.) Head-to-head competition  (2.)
Head-to-head goal
differential  (3.) Regular season goal differential.

Lak Named Player of the Week

In the midst of the most important part of the season thus far, Colorado's
hard-nosed defender, Peter Lak, has elevated his play to help the Foxes push
for a second place regular season finish and perhaps the home field
advantage in the upcoming playoffs. While every game counts in this season's
tight race for the playoffs, the 6-2, 180 pound Lak anchored a stingy
Colorado defense during Week 15 play to earn Player of the Week honors.

Playing three matches in just six busy days full of traveling, Lak helped
subdue a dangerous New York offense as the Foxes won 2-1 in Doylestown, PA
on August 16. Two days later in Colorado, Lak's defensive play was key in
controlling Rochester's Doug Miller, the league's second leading goal scorer
with 13, and the always dangerous Lenin Steenkamp in route to a 5-2 drubbing
of the Rhinos.  Back east in Rochester on the 21st, Lak, who's strong game
in the air helped secure the Foxes' defense on the Rhino's short field,
commanded a shutout performance by the Foxes before dropping the subsequent
tie-breaker, 2-1, following the scoreless regulation.

Lak, 23, joined the Foxes midway through the season and has started and
played all 90 minutes in the seven matches he has played.  A recent graduate
of Cal-State Fullerton where he was a standout member of their '93 Final
Four squad, Lak last played with the LA Salsa of the USISL.  Lak is from
Huntington Beach, CA.

Colorado Foxes:  Head coach Lorne Donaldson, 41, has doubled his duties by
adding his name to the roster as a player.  Donaldson, a well known former
member of Jamaica's National Team (80 caps) and member of the '79 Jamaican
Premier League champion Kingston Cavaliers' team , last played
professionally for the Foxes in '90.  Donaldson also played and coached for
the Denver Kickers, an amateur team based in Golden, which captured national
championships in '85 and '94.

championship team and a member of Seattle's '95 championship squad, was
traded to Montreal by Rochester for future considerations...The Impact
signed forward Mohammed Diabete, age 23.  Diabate, orginally from New
Guinea, last played in Montreal for the club Corfinium.

New York Fever:  The Fever placed defender Chris Fox on waivers.  Fox,
originally from Georgia, was claimed by Atlanta...Forward Bobby Newman, a
May graduate of Colgate University, was released by the Fever last week.

Released by the Crew, Young scored 8 goals in 11 games for the Shamrocks
this season...Born in Jamaica but a naturalized citizen in Canada, defender
Dino Lopez was added to the Rhinos' roster.  Lopez last played for the
Milwaukee Rampage of the USISL.  Known as the "Ironman," Lopez played all 24
games for the Rampage which allowed only 22 goals all season.  Lopez was
also selected as a USISL All-Star...Defender Marco Rizi was traded to
Montreal by Rochester for future considerations.  Rizi is from Montreal and
was a member of the Impact's '94 championship team.

Seattle Sounders:  No player movements.

for Trelleborg of the Swedish Premier Division...Vancouver added two backup
keepers, Rob Merkl and Luca Dalla Pace, to their roster.  Merkl, 30, spent
seven seasons as the 86ers' backup keeper and has registered a solid 13-4-1
record.  Merkl, from Surrey, BC, holds the 86er record for lowest career
goals against average at 1.14.  He last played for White Rocks United...
Dalla Pace, 19, spent the summer playing with the 86er Reserves and Club
Inter.
