Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/2/12 12:48 PM
Hi there,

today I updated my servers, through the web interface. I did the mistake not to shutdown the servers before...now I have no idea how to shut them down safely?

Another problem is, that I can´t access the server through the web interface, it doesn´t simply show them anymore. Creative via archive doesn´t work too -.-

Am I wrong? Can someone help me please?

Best regards

Simon
Re: Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/2/12 2:32 PM
Right after the first reboot my whole server was deleted! Not good -.-
Re: Servers unavailable after update Will 11/2/12 2:56 PM
Deleted or simply not showing in the web ui. I suspect there's quite a difference.

This has been a reported issue with a few people, and sometimes it's the name of the server and sometimes something else.

If you can, share your /usr/games/minecraft/mineos.log

Also, what's the output to:

cd /usr/games/minecraft
./mineos_console.py -s servername start --debug

Re: Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/2/12 3:04 PM
I was looking through WinSCP...it was deleted..
Re: Servers unavailable after update Will 11/2/12 3:21 PM
Are you using RAM disks an are not familiar with how they work?  Mineos scripts do not and have never had any deleting capability, exactly to avoid what you're saying has happened here, merely by downloading some text files.
Re: Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/2/12 3:25 PM
I am using ram disk, and I think I know how they work and what they´re used for in Mine OS. ;)

It happened that I pressed the update button unluckily, but, even with RAMDisk, only the unsaved world data should be gone, but not the "old" stored information. But the whole server directory was empty. I went another way: Luckily, the server didn´t delete the backup, neither the archive directory [but I can´t restore from that...]. So I restored the backup and copied the latest files from archive. Seems to work. But I don´t know why the server deleted everythin in the server directory..
Re: Servers unavailable after update Will 11/2/12 3:46 PM
Before you go much further with your world, I recommend you read the wiki on RAM disks. The whole server directory is most certainly operating as designed, as all RAM disk users experience-it gets cleared out every reboot.

In the install I recommended only those familiar with RAM disks to use them, but further in the wiki I explain I don't believe servers should really need them at all--

But mind you, the update has nothing to do with the empty server directory--that is going to happen EVERY reboot, scheduled or unscheduled.

Re: Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/2/12 3:57 PM
Hi Will,

I thought i´ve read, that only the world files are copied to the ram disk [in your wiki] and not the whole server files? This would explain why everything is gone. Mhm, but I was sure I tried the "worst-case" scenario in the past [sudden shutdown with ram disk] and the files were still there [without automatic restore..just read the disk without boot..] mhm...strange behaviour.

But everything seems to work fine now. But one last thing, why couldn´t I restore the archive files? Is that in relation with the new server.config?
Re: Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/2/12 4:00 PM
Edit: So, if I interprete your words the right way, you recommend to go further without ram disk? Used it for more than one year now and were quite satisfied...

Okay, now something really strange... I had to reboot the machine, wanted to upgrade ram. So I stopped the server, on both machines and shut them down. All safely I guess. But then, right after the reboot, the servers were
gone, again. This can´t be in relation with the RAM Disk I think.

LATEST UPDATE:

Seems I have found out, what was wrong. I had a name scheme like that for my servers: xxx_worldname .

I just tried to build a server from an archive in a freshly set-up VM. If a named the server "xxx_world1" it couldn´t be rebuild from archive. But then i tried just only "worldname"
and it worked. Is this a normal behaviour and "forced" by yourself/the scripts? With this in mind, mine os kept the server after reboot.

So, everythings fine and I think I figured out, what was wrong.
Re: Servers unavailable after update Will 11/6/12 6:29 AM
I think depending on which version of the scripts you had at the time would affect its behavior.  As of 0.5.0g, underscores should be regarded as valid characters and it should be allowed to be built/used from an archive.

That said, there is a minimal amount of sanitizing I 'force' on world names--letters, numbers and underscore and periods; these are SCREEN friendly characters and easy to parse, and should (once all the 0.4.x usage goes out of style), should introduce a more consistent server management experience.
Re: Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/6/12 7:55 AM
Hi Will,

yeah could have been, with the old scripts. But, no problem anymore, I got an other name scheme now :) But sometimes, the Web UI won´t show me the server...can´t imagine why. Machine is freshly set-up and server was new/created from archive.

And then, sometimes it happends, that the Web UI couldn´t show me the server anymore. There is now way to access through Web UI. So I have to stop the server manually and then reboot the machine. Don´t know why this happends now...

Hi, me again

I was just shutting down the server to change some properties [motd and things like that]. Wanted to restart the server, its working, but the Web UI doesn´t show it. The "Backup and Restore" shows it, but I can´t make archive or backups. Don´t know why this happends.

Does anything show in mineos.log?

At least nothing that seems unusual to me..

this is the log about the time it happend.

Re: Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/12/12 6:50 AM
Just had to reboot the machine and looked into the mineos.log, one question, this "(INFO) __command_direct: Executing command as mc: rdiff-backup --force --restore-as-of 0B /home/mc/backup/server /home/mc/servers/server" means, a restore
to the first "bit"? Why is MineOS always doing this after a reboot? And is this really the first bit?
Re: Servers unavailable after update Will 11/12/12 7:57 AM
I think you need to do a little more research on RAM disks
Re: Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/12/12 8:20 AM
I don´t even use it anymore. It´s a freshly set-up system without ramdisk.
Re: Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/12/12 8:21 AM
And, the server was shut down correctly.
Re: Servers unavailable after update Will 11/12/12 8:32 AM
When you were using RAM disks, on reboot it would restore.

Even with a newly installed system, that servers server.config still is set to. Change that true to false

Re: Servers unavailable after update Simon Kulessa 11/12/12 8:37 AM
This is the server.config of th server

[minecraft]
profile = bukkit

[crontabs]
archive = hourly
backup = hourly

[onreboot]
restore = true
start = true

[java]
java_path = /usr/java/java-latest
java_bin = java
java_tweaks = -server
java_xmx = 4096

Doesn´t seem to be activated.

Where? Sorry, I can´t read anything related with a ram disk.
