A Long Shot but - AFP bugs in Mavericks Server causing Microsoft Word crashes, among other things.... Pirozzolo, Ben 06/12/13 04:14
This is an odd problem, and wondered if anyone else was experiencing it. Annoyingly as far as I can see there is nothing in the Console logs that explains this, so this is a long shot but thought Id ask.

Were testing new clients and Servers on Mavericks, with Golden Triangle AD/OD, AFP Home Folders and latest versions of MS Office installed.

After a user has just saved a Microsoft Word document, and then hits the red close button, the Mac client will freeze and make their AFP connection idle instantly. It stays frozen, and the only way to unfreeze the machine is to disconnect the user via Server.app. Annoyingly of course if you do this the home folder is lost and doesnt automatically reconnect so the machine is useless and needs to be restarted. It happens randomly and there seems to be no pattern to it.

Interestingly, when testing our current Mountain Lion clients on the new server, they also experience this problem, so it seems that somehow the AFP Server on Mavericks Server itself is causing the issue.

The annoying after effect of this crash is that the Word file you were working on is somehow tainted, so that if you open it again after restarting the machine, it crashes whatever machine it is opened on. Even if that machine is not bound to the network. The only way to fix the file is to copy it to the local machines Hard Drive, open it, change something on it, resave it and copy it back to the network. A real pain.  The only thing I can think might be the cause is Quicklook, as that has caused similar problems in the past. Perhaps when trying to update the Quicklook preview, something is damaged which causes the crash. So will try disabling Quicklook to test it. But was just wondering if anybody had come across this issue, and found a workaround/solution, because its a bit of a show stopping issue for us.

To be honest the File Sharing setup in Mavericks has a lot of bugs that were only just discovering. For example the File Sharing Connections tab in Server.app wont disconnect multiple users at once, and when you click on a user to disconnect them it will randomly choose another user sometimes. Also users will most of the time not disconnect from the server when they log off, it is only when the machine is shut down that the user is disconnected. An even bigger problem is that the AFP Server has real problems letting go of files, so am getting a lot of File In Use errors, even after machines are logged off and shutdown. Something we never had in Mountain Lion. The only way to fix it is to actually disable and then reenable File Sharing. Im not sure why they felt the need to change anything in Mavericks as 'File Sharing' was working quite well in Mountain Lion.

Cheers,
Ben

Ben,

This is also a long shot, but do you have a
globally-writable .TemporaryItems folder at the root of the share hosting
the home directories?

Oops. I said home directories, but meant at the root of the share hosting
the files. It doesn't necessarily have to be a network home location.

Hi Mike. Thanks for the quick response. Yes that folder is there and the
permissions are correct.

On the server side is afp logging enabled? To enable it run this command:

        % serveradmin settings afp:activityLog=yes

The logs should appear in /Library/Logs/AppleFileService/

Ben, does this happen when the file is saved as a .doc of as a .docx?  Guessing .docx but it might not matter, I did see something like this a while ago, but using .doc was ok.  ...and this doesn't happen to Pages does it?
