The Happy Lift'r Prize Mads Hartmann Jensen 10/26/10 3:25 PM
Hey guys,

We're announcing the "Happy Lift'r Prize". The prize will be given every 2. wednesday of the month and has the value of $100. It goes to someone who has been awesome in the Lift community. In the case of multiple winners the prize will be split equally.

If someone has been helpful you can nominate them by replying to this thread with a small description of who the person is and what he/she has done of awesome things. If you spent some time working on the WIKI (or have been helpful in some other way) it's perfectly acceptable to remind people of your great work by replying to this thread as well.

So, keep being as awesome as you are now and maybe you will be able to collect the first bounty the 10 of November.

Thanks,
Mads Hartmann Jensen

Lets see how it will work with this thread first, if doesn't work out we can work on a nicer system :)

David is sponsoring it and the winner(s) will be the ones with most mentions on this thread - so in that way everyone can help select the winners :)

I thought I would pass on a reference to a book I'm reading now about
motivation. The main theme is that there are intrinsic and extrinsic
motivators. Doing something for the love of it, or to be part of
something great (like the lift community) is an intrinsic motivator.
Doing something specifically for a goal is an extrinsic motivator.

The research showed that people driven by an extrinsic motivator were
less creative than those driven by an intrinsic motivator.

This usage is one of the few cases where a reward doesn't  decrease
creativity as the reward is just something nice to do and not an
expectation of participation.

At any rate - I am finding it a really interesting read and it seemed
apropos to the topic.

cheers,
Paul

Re: [Lift] The Happy Lift'r Prize pauldale 10/26/10 5:28 PM
It's more about whether the motivation is coming from inside or outside.

I think I missed the most interesting point. Applying an extrinsic
motivator (reward) to an already intrinsically motivating task makes
people LESS creative than they would have been without it.

I am hoping the prize represents a community celebration of a contributor and that the celebration/praise serves as an internal motivator as well as a way of making clear that the Lift community recognizes and celebrates contribution.

So I'm not an expert (and reading half a book about the topic
certainly doesn't make me one).

However, my take (based mainly on reading this research) is that
making sure it is 2/3 recognition 1/3 cash will go further towards
accomplishing this goal. For instance a page on the website publicly
recording the recognition and celebration.

Well, like I said it is worth reading the book.

But, briefly, the goal makes people focused on the goal and not on the
challenge. With the narrowed focus people took much longer to see
non-obvious solutions.

Sorry about what I believe to be somehow off-topic, but considering
that the prize objective is to foster the group's motivation, this
subject may be relevant.

I don't see this prize as a motivation tool, which is typically used
to entice people to complete a task they don't want to, or do not
value.
I see this as appreciation for something that already happens.

I have a few people to nominate, starting with Derek, for his ongoing
improvement of the Lift Book.

e-highfive!

Thanks,

Re: The Happy Lift'r Prize Daniel Hobi 1/16/11 4:51 AM
Thank you guys! After 6 days celebrating non-stop I finally found the
time to write my speech of thanks. :-)

It has now almost become a year since I've started with Lift and I
still have the feeling that there's so much more to explore (i.e. I've
never worked with mapper so far). After evaluating Lift (jpa-archetype
--> nice work btw Derek!) with our proof of concept project called
"Travel Companion"  I decided to invest some additional time in Lift's
overwhelming Ajax / Comet support for a project called "Lift Poker".

Meanwhile, I'm in the very lucky position that I can (and certainly
want to) create my projects in Scala / Lift furthermore.

The happy Lift'r price is a good approach to motivate people to help
others. Personally, I was and will never be a fan of it due to one
simply reason: $$$. Thankfully, David states that you are free to
choose the kind of your prize which led me to open my photoshop and
create the (maybe) first "Happy Lift'r of the month" certificate:
http://www.danielhobi.ch/lift/liftr_prize.psd
http://www.danielhobi.ch/lift/liftr_prize_2.psd
(I'm no designer so changes are highly appreciated!)

Don't get me wrong: Some feel honored by getting a gift card and yes:
please feel honored! I (and maybe others of you guys too) feel more
joy by having a certificate hanging on their wall stating: Happy
Lift'r Month 2011 signed by the founder of the Lift Webframework David
Pollak.

Re: [Lift] Re: The Happy Lift'r Prize David Pollak 5/18/11 5:08 AM
Okay... I'm going to break my silence on nominating folks for Happy Lift'r because there are some many good answers these days... thus I'm going to nominate a lot, let folks +1 (or not) and let Mads sort it out at the end of the month.

I'd like to nominate Jan for Happy Lift'r for this thread: https://groups.google.com/d/topic/liftweb/Enjw7CGV8Jg/discussion  The answer was a nugget of pure Lift gold and the presentation of the answer was great.
Re: [Lift] Re: The Happy Lift'r Prize David Pollak 5/18/11 5:11 AM
And I'd like to nominate DoomPirate for https://groups.google.com/d/topic/liftweb/krVtkr-F5mc/discussion and some of his other helpful posts.  He's been here 3 weeks and he's already helping others.  Rock on DoomPirate
Re: [Lift] Re: The Happy Lift'r Prize David Pollak 5/18/11 5:28 AM
And while I'm at it, I'd like to nominate Etam *and* Naftoli for this thread: https://groups.google.com/d/topic/liftweb/5XCwc4H3zIs/discussion

Etam asked the question in an ideal way.

Naftoli's explanation and deep dive into CSS Selector Transforms, functional composition, and mixing bind and CSS Selector Transforms was brilliant in its simplicity and comprehensiveness.
Re: [Lift] Re: The Happy Lift'r Prize Derek Chen-Becker 5/19/11 10:55 AM
I'm +1 for Joni for JSON and +1 for Naftoli. When you first see CSS selectors they look like magic, and Naftoli's explanation really shows how simple they actually are under the hood.

Derek

Mads,

if I'm correctly receiving all messages in this thread, I believe, Diego is right. You've announced him to be a winner on November 10th. Afterwards I see there Indrajit's and Tyler's congratulation messages and Diego's thank you message. Then follows mine nomination  for Peter, followed by Diego's and Dave W's +1 for Peter. After that I see only your winner annunciation on December 10th. So if I'm not mistaken, since November 10th, it's +3 for Peter, and no other nomination.

I would like to nominate Joni Freeman for his dedication to lift json
and the users.
here
http://groups.google.com/group/liftweb/browse_thread/thread/f6d3dacc25be535a#
he says how he has two backward incompatible changes coming, but
prefers to release them together to reduce the changes we need to make
once we upgrade.
He has also been looking into the yet to be released scala 2.10 and
using the new reflection api.

Then there is the great performance improvement he introduced,
described on this thread

And only after two days since I posted a question, he quickly

Hmm…I don't know if I am entitled to make a suggestion...but if I was I'd vote for Richard Dallaway for his concise contributions to the cookbook and the forum and for all the work maintaining the liftmodules.

Also for his reply at the 2012 Scala Conference in London, where he was moderating the the Park Bench discussion, to a question from the audience:

"Yeah Lift is still very hot"

I'd like to nominate Lachlan Deck. For the great work he did to get the maven archetypes working with the latest version of Lift. Not only did he get them ready, but was also very patient until I had some time to publish them and then
gave me exact instructions to get them published on sonatype.

He is a really good example of how this community works.

I'd like to nominate "Tony Kay".

He has been contributing to the mailing list for some time now, and the last couple of contributions have been in the documentation area. He didn't find docs about the Css Bound LiftScreen, and went ahead and added a wiki[1]  page to helps others, and then sent a pull request [2] to the cookbook to add a page there too.

Thanks Tony!

Re: [Lift] Re: The Happy Lift'r Prize David Pollak 7/31/14 4:39 AM
When we started the Happy Lift'r prize, I would give the winner a $50 Amazon gift certificate or something similar. However, there was some discussion (mostly private) about the value of community recognition vs. the value of a monetary prize... and I stopped giving the monetary prize so that the Happy Lift'r was a way for the community to recognize an individual for their contribution.

So, to answer your question, there's no monetary prize, but there is the value of being called out for doing something above and beyond in a community where the participants work hard to help each other.

Thank you everyone! So first I'd like to thank the academy. Then my mom... Mom, you're my inspiration. Thank you for teaching me how to work hard out on the chicken farm.

Etc. etc.

Seriously, thank you, community. The Lift framework is one of the greatest discoveries I've made in my little software development career, and the community combined with the technical merits makes Lift in a class of its own. I've never been more honored than when I was asked to officially join the team. I thoroughly enjoy being a part of Lift and I hope the contributions started by Doug Roper and continued in lift-ng play a pivotal role in allowing Lift to own a timeless role in the ever changing realm of web development.

Re: Re: [Lift] Re: The Happy Lift'r Prize Matt Farmer 11/26/14 10:14 AM
I want to nominate Antonio and Diego both for November. In scanning over the support posts we've gotten to the mailing list in November, I am only able to find a small handful that one of them didn't respond to, and for that I'm immensely thankful. Between the two of them they've made a tag-team user support duo for Lift that is a force to be reckoned with. The end-of-the-year hustle is busy for everyone, and they've both delivered a spectacularly consistent show of support through the month in spite of that.

Cheers,
