New Project: Webcam & pc for Arch Reactor Google+ Hangout, Live meeting broadcast, and project video journalism Gene J. (GeekTinker) 10/4/12 4:31 PM

I have considered a new project of setting up a webcam on a computer for the space that allows for connecting it to Google+ as an Arch Reactor Hangout for any member who wants to do so.

We could also use that to broadcast our public events online as a Google Hangout. We could narrow access to members for any meetings that are not open to the public.

It would score "geek points" with me if somebody couldn't physically make it to the space for a meeting, but through a Google+ Hangout could present through the computer and the projector and receive feedback.

The same computer and camera could be used to record journal videos of what projects anybody is currently working on at our Makerspace, too.

Plus, it might allow more people to participate who can't always make it physically for a meeting.  It might catch the interest of a few new members who find the hangout online.  They can see what we are doing and perk their interest enough to come out and participate.

Gene

Note: One member has offered the use of a very nice webcam for this purpose (thanks Pete) and I can provide a PC.  I'll be looking for a monitor.  Would anyone else like to work on this project with me?  Can anyone offer up any more suggestions or purposes for the same equipment?  Are you diabolically opposed to this project? If so, why? ;)

I think Pete just donated a monitor to the space on Tuesday. :-)

I did, indeed. And we're welcome to use it for this. Though I think it would be cooler to hook up a hangout to the projector.

The only problem I see using the projector for the telepresence device is the display might be in the eyes of whoever is at the desk.  I guess we could just have no one at the desk or move it to the side or something.

Not to mention making goofy faces behind the back of whomever is
currently speaking during a meeting. :)

Haha, good point, Joe.

So yeah, I think the Samsung monitor I donated Tuesday would be a good fit. I'll bring in the camera next Tuesday (or this weekend if I get a chance).

Would one of those IP cameras that george posted possibly work better? It could be a whole lot easier to have it mounted to the ceiling (maybe with an indicator light too) with a switch on the power cord, so to start and stop a broadcast, all one has to do is flip a switch. Using a computer and web cam is a great re-use of old stuff, but I fear it wouldn't get used unless one of the few people who know how to use it is there (turn it on, log in, properly setup and start the software, properly shut down the computer when done...)

A computer is going to have to host the google hangout either way.  A
USB camera or hardware video capture card is much easier to setup than
a IP cam.  I've played with trying to stream a IP cam feeds to video
conferences before and it always seemed to be kludgey and required
buggy software.

Also btw, however Niels responded to the thread caused it to break in two via gmail.

The Foscam cameras support multi-user, multi-camera access.  I don't know what the bandwidth would need to be for that though.  Their app is pretty nice.  I bet it would be interesting to watch 2 people fight over control of the camera. ;)

Looking at the two subject lines... Niels' version has a new "Re:" between (Arch Reactor) and the thread title.

NIELS BROKEN REPLY:

VS.

ORIGINAL THREAD:

I use the google groups interface on my desktop and the iPhone. In this case I was using the desktop browser and clicked on the big red "POST REPLY" button at the top of the page. I guess to play nice with those who use the discussion group through their email I should instead click on the specific "Post reply" button on the last comment in the thread?

Another thing about the google groups interface on the iPhone. Once a thread has been started, everything in it is one long chain and there is no differentiation of split threads or who replied to who.

Lastly in this off topic post, is there any way to by default not have every reply contain the quoted text of every reply before it? That may be ok for a few back and forth emails, but in a long discussion board its really bulky and confusing to read.
