Interesting. It'd never occurred to me that these aren't actually running Gingerbread. Android 2.2.2 = Froyo.

Just to further the conversation on this.

The U8180 phone I got from my local Optus store yesterday was refusing
to root with GingerBreak-1.20. Applying the update that Paul uploaded
[1] solved the issue.

For completeness I've attached a screen capture showing the About
Software screen before and after the update. The only noticeable
difference on this screen is the build number.

Other things I've noticed is a change in the icons in the application
drawer. As my main interest in the phone is for development I didn't
take that much notice before flashing it.

As GingerBreak is technically using a software exploit to achieve our
desired result, the installation of the su binary, it is possible that
in the more recent builds of the ROM the exploit has been fixed.
