Why is PDF 417 still in beta?

I've noticed that PDF 417 is still in beta. Why is that? I'm currently considering using zxing in a production application, and zxing is my library of choice, but I'm not sure how turned off I should be that the feature I need is considered beta. It seems to have been in beta for several years.
