quick question about search syntax

Been working with json responses using the api but there is one perhaps simple thing I can't figure out and that's the general search (q=?). It keeps giving me forbidden responses and I must be putting the key in the wrong place or something. Could someone just give me an example as it is evidently not this:

https://api.zotero.org/users/<userid>/items?q=XXX?key=<APIKEY>

Nothing to do with the search syntax. HTTP query parameters need to be
separated by ampersands. You have another question mark.
