Hi Friends,
As some of you may know, I moved to Sullivan County this spring in the
hope of growing on more land. I am currently working on a 10,000
square foot garden for my housemates and me. The climate is a bit
cooler up here, just
below the Catskill mountains and over the
Shawangunk mountain range.
The property used to be owned by a woman who rented to seasonal
anglers, drawn by the bountiful Bashakill wetlands (conserved now by
the DEC) and the Neversink River. It also had an orchard and cattle on
its land some time ago. I'm learning about the soil makeup of this
land--it seems that is acidic from the many pines, rich in copper and
phosphorous (most likely due to heavy fertilizer and insecticide from
years past), and deficient in essential minerals. So it will take some
time to restore the soil.
In the meanwhile, I am growing plants for sale.
On Saturday, May 24, I will be selling my veggie starts from 9 am to 12 pm.
Cherry tomatoes, mesclun mixes, broccoli, cauliflower. I would love to see you!
If you are available, please attend Wilson Chang's talk on beneficial
and pesky insects at 2 pm at the Grange. Register
