(author’s note. This chapter is long overdue, but at least this chapter is here, I been struggling with writer's block, horrible ideas and parents so I am happy to say. Chapter 2 is here.)
I woke up to the sound of something shuffling through the dark house at 3 in the morning, Satori woke up and was about to say something but I put my finger over my mouth. I listen even more, sure enough there was something shuffling through my house. I pull out a desert eagle from under my pillow in case what ever was lurking in the dark was not friendly.
“Stay here, if I don’t comeback in the next five minutes, hide under my bed.” I told her.
“Yu..,” Satori replied. I flipped on the light switch, Nothing in the room, that was good. I open my underwear drawer and grab a clip of ammo and silencer. I load my gun, I cock it back and screwed on the silencer. I slowly opened my door and kept my gun aimed forward. I crept down the down hallway and peeked around the corner. I could see something move through the darkness and I heard a bag crackle. I put my hand over the light switch and turn it on. There in the middle of the room was a dirty Yomou and a Yuyuko. Their eyes meets mine as Yuyuko swallows a mouthful of Cheetos puffs. The Myon went forward brandishing a sharpened stick to try to intimidate me.
“Mister should get out of Yuyuko’s easy place.” Yuyuko threaten me. I let a laugh and shot the Yuyuko. Sakura mochi and wet Cheeto paste went in all directions as the overwhelming firepower blew the yukkuri to bits. Yomou jaw dropped open as she looked at the remains of her former master.
“What, Biatch had it coming for eating my Cheetos.” I told her. Yomou came forward and grovelled before my feet or at least that’s what it looks like since she flatten her body. She started crying, great just what I need.
“Yomou has failed to protect her master (sniffle) Now Yomou has no master, Wahhhh!!!~” Yomou cried and rolled around. The hammer of my gun pulled back as I was about to end the Yomou but her tears and misery made me feel guilty. I guess she’s not a bad yukkuri, just a misled one.
“Yomou…” I called her name softly.
“Bwahhhh!” She kept crying.
“Youmu.” I said in a stern tone.
“wahhhh *Cough,cough,sniffle*)” Yomou kept crying.
“Youmu.” I gritted through my teeth and that got her attention. I inhale then exhale deeply to calm down.
“Why doesn’t Yomou become mister Chris apprentice?” I asked her to which she looked up with teary eyes.
“Realwy.” her voice squeaked.
“Really.” I said as I petted her dirty hair. She cheered and bounced around in happiness.
“Now I need you to wait here for a minute.” I told her as I look around the room, time to give Lauren a call. I go to the living room to use my Super Mario 64 telephone. Dam I’m a sucker for nostalgic items. I dial her number and sure enough she picked up.
“Hello?” Lauren called out drowsily.
“Hi, Lauren I need you to clean up a bad mess, I need come over soon.”I asked her. She let out a sigh.
“ At 3 in the morning, Chris do you know that I need my rest, Right?.” She asked me.
“How about I pay you double it would take to clean this mess.” I persuaded her. She went silent for a couple minutes and then spoke up. .
“Don’t worry, I’ll be there soon *Yawn*” She yawned and hung up. I then go back to my room snd Satori jumped as I opened the door.
“No worries Satori, Everything is gonna be okay, so go back to bed.” I told her and turned off the lights.
“Okay mister Chris.” Satori said as she went back to bed. Now time to wash Yomou. She seemed happy to see me.
“Yomou wants to play with mister.” She called out. I smile and picked her up. She was about the size of a softball. I brought her to the bathroom and grabbed a soft fine her brush and a little baby shampoo Tammie lent me. I took off her accessory and put her under the sink.
“Yu~” Yomou moaned as the low pressure of the warm water. I turned off the water and began scrubbing her hair with shampoo in my hands. I rinsed her hair out with warm water and brushed out the loosened dirt and bugs that infested her hair. I then checked around her body for any dirt and grime to scrub off. Now that she was nice and clean so I could dry her off and put her to bed.
“Mister is the best!” Yomou exclaimed. I brought her back to my room and put her to bed.
“Goodnight, sleep tight.” I told her and was about to close my door.
“Yuaghhh, mister please don’t leave Yomou alone.” Yomou cried out. I sighed and went back into the room and took her with me. I sat on the couch and Yomou sat on my lap as we watched T.V and waited for Lauren. I was watching the news and there was a knock on my door. Yomou perked up and went towards the door as I answered it.
“Chris, I came by with my cleaning supplies, what’s the problem?” Lauren asked me.
“”I ,might’ve, sort’ve had a yukkuri explode in my kitchen.” I told her. She sighed and I showed her the mess.
“Please, enlighten me of how, there is paste everywhere?” Lauren asked.
“I shot it with the desert eagle your husband gave me.” I told her and flashed the weapon.
“I’m going to kill Stephen.” Lauren said as she got her mop and started to mop the mess. It took her about half an hour of mopping and wiping and I had a clean kitchen but there still was a hole through my floor from the bullet.
“Finally, Now that will be about 150 dollars.” She Demanded. I sighed and went back to my room to look for my wallet. Satori perked up as I opened the door.
“Mister Chris is everything really okay?” Satori asked me. I grabbed my wallet and opened it yo check it.
“Yeah, everything is fine, Just go back to bed.” I told her as I was about to walk out the door but Satori said something that grabbed my attention.
“Satori can’t read Mister Chris mind but Satori can read Mister Chris heart. Mister Chris is Stressed.” She said and I stopped.
“Yeah I guess you could say, I’m a little stressed but, I’ll be alright, just get some shut eye okay.” I told her as I closed the door. When I came back I could see Lauren playing with Yomou.
“This one is so cute and well behaved, I just want to take you home.” Lauren said as she pinched Yomou’s cheeks.
“Yuahhh!, Mister Chris is my master.” Yomou cried and struggled free from her grasp to run behind my leg. I gave Lauren a deadpanned look and handed her the fifty dollars.
“Thanks Lauren, and hey next time you're here be a lil more gentle with my yukkuri.” I told her as she walked out the door.
“Yeah, whatever, bye Chris.” Lauren said as she ignored me. I shook my head in disapproval and took Yomou back to my bed.
“Alright, time for sleep.” I said but I looked at my alarm clock my smile turned to a frown it was 4 in the morning. I groaned and pulled the plug on the alarm. Fuck it, I ain’t waking up at 6 A.M.
“Goodnight mister.” Yomou yawns and her eyes slowly closed. I looked up to the ceiling and went to bed as well. Great now I have two more mouths to feed, I hope this one isn't gonna be trouble.
Most of the problem was the sheer amount of "said." Im not going to pretend to be an expert writer or anything, but one thing I know is that stopping the reader every line to remind them that X spoke isn't easy on the reader. If the reader knows who is talking, it isn't necessary to point it out. Assume the reader can imply that X is speaking and that Y replies, while only clarifying if something changes.
Compare this:
"Yes?" he said.
"No," she said.
"No?" he said.
"Yes," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"No, no," she said.
To this:
"Yes?"
"No."
"No?"
"Yes."
"Yes."
"No, no."
Read them both over. They say the exact same thing through dialogue, and assuming it's already established whos involved and who is speaking, it makes just as much sense. The only difference is that one is easier to follow. It's the difference between listening to a conversation and listening to narration that is constantly trying to make sure you're still paying attention. It slows you down and ends up making it harder to pay attention at all.
That's just one of many things that stuck out while reading, but I think it'd be really good to get in the practice of. Its not just about telling the story: it's about telling it well, on top of the story itself.
Writing's hard, man. Keep up the good work
I woke up as the sun’s gentle rays caressed my face. There on my chest Youmu was sleeping and Satori grasped my arm as she slept. I managed to get them off me and went to the kitchen. I needed to get working on Tammie’s project. I knew just the guy who could help. I went to my home phone and dialed a friend. I guess my yukkuri heard me talking because as soon as I hang up I can see Satori holding Youmu, it seems like they were acquainted.
“Is mister gonna leave us.” Satori asked and I rubbed the back of my head.
“No I am gonna call Tammie and see if she can watch you.” I told her and she nodded. I dialed Tammie and explained the situation. She seemed to understand and I hung up the phone.
“Well we're gonna go to miss Tammie’s.”
I got ready for the day. I got my desert eagle and holstered it before I brushed my teeth.
“Does mister Chris need that?” Satori asked as she placed Youmu on top of the sink counter. I spat into the sink and rinsed out my mouth.
“Well yeah, the world is a dangerous place, better safe than sorry.”
I brought the both of them to my truck. Youmu decided to speak up.
“Is miss Tammie nice?”
“Yeah she is very nice,”
I buckled in Satori. We pulled out the garage and Satori started talking with You on how I saved her life and how Tammie is a kind and easy. I looked up to into the rear view mirror. I couldn’t help but smile as we pulled into Tammie’s drive way There stood Tammie with a cup of coffee in hand. I got out and unbuckled Satori and Youmu. I helped them down and up to Tammie’s door. Satori ran up to Tammie’s leg and gave her a hug.
“Hey, thanks for watching them on such short notice.”
“No problem Chris, I’ll sit them in front of a T.V and have them watch educational programs, i also made some design changes for the costume.” Tammie then handed me a folder with blueprints.
“So you want, to put Satori in this small cockpit on the chest, and add shoulder mounted weapon, I thought this was a costume not a weapon.”
She smirked.
“Just make airsoft guns, Don’t use actual bullets dummy, It’s just to make the mech slightly more realistic, besides you're a big hunky man, your the right size for this costume and so is Satori.” Tammie gave me a pat on the shoulder. I sighed and nodded.
“Fine, I’ll get on it, Thomas is waiting for me at scrap yard. I asked him if he can produce these parts.”
I knelt down to Satori and Youmu.
“Mister Chris must go hunt, hunt, love you Satori, love you Youmu” I said and gave them both a hug.
“Satori loves mister Chris too.”
“But Youmu loves mister Chris more, myon”
Youmu said before I break away from the hug and go back the truck. I watch as Tammie ushers them in before I pull out of the driveway and make my way to the scrap yard. There at the Scrap yard I see my old friend Thomas sitting on his porch with his Rottweiler and his American bulldog laying down with him. He looked up with his blue eyes focusing on my truck and he smiled.
“Chris how yah been doing?” He asked me as I step out the truck.
“Good, I’ve just got caught up making a little project.”
“What kind of project?”
“One that’s going to be really cool and I need your help.”
I then handed Thomas the blueprints, he flipped through them and rubbed his blonde hair.
“So you're building a suit of power armor?”
“Yes, it’s for Tammie so she can sponsor her new game, I need some of these parts and since I know you have a forge, plus a scrap yard with infinite resources, you could possibly help manufacture some of these parts?”
Thomas frowned and shook his head.
“I can’t, the place I keep my forge at has been taken over by those fucking dough balls, They cut my dog, I’ve asked exterminators to help but they won’t come into the scrap yard because it’s too dangerous.”
“What if we go in and exterminate them?”
“Well I would but there are so many of them. Maybe if you can help me, I can help you with your project.”
“Sounds like a good deal to me.”
We shook on it and I went to my truck. I’m a gun person, some may call me a warmonger because I always have a weapon on me, wherever I go. I pulled out a custom Winchester M1887 shotgun. I put bird shot shells in it, there was really no need to use overwhelming firepower. I unholster my handgun and hand it to Thomas
“Remember shoot the yukkuri, not your friend.”
“Relax will you, this isn’t Day Z.”
I chuckled as we went on our yukkuri hunt. We passed by some cars and on the hood were the husks of yukkuri who decided to sunbathe in the wrong place, as we're approaching the the shed with the forge when we heard murmuring. I signaled Thomas to come to what seemed to be the origin of the murmuring. I flipped over the metal plate to find a nest of dirty but adorable koyukkuri.
“Shiddy ol geezer gibe weimu scheets sheets.” The Koreimu told me. I was disappointed that they were shit heads so I snapped my fingers and slammed the bottom of my hand into my palm. Thomas nodded and lifted his boot.
“Does Shiddy ol geezer want to…(SPLAT)” The koyukkuri was pulverized with that one swing of the hammer along with the rest of the nest.
“How many of these balls of paste infest your scrapyard?” I asked him and Thomas shrugged.
“I dunno, they seem to come and go.”
“Well how often do you see yukkuri?”
“I see them everyday, they always try to break into my house.”
“So it’s bad.”
“Yep the forge is up ahead, let’s take a stealthy approach, I really want to get the drop on them.”
We went over a pile of scrap metal to find a clan of yukkuri. We just seem to arrive at the right time because they were all gathered around a yukkuri that I recognize as a Marisa.
“The Great Bawaisa has a super smart plan to get the sweet sweets from the shitty human home.”
.I looked at Thomas and held up one finger while I took aim. On the count of three I fired. several yukkuri died due to the spread of the pellets while others were wounded due to the range. The yukkuri went into panic mode as I fired a couple more shots before reloading. Thomas smiled as he fired at the yukkuri. They then began panic as the hail of bullet never seemed to stop. The firefight concluded with many yukkuri dead and some injured.
“Why would you dobe zis.”
“Because you're in my home”
Thomas then double tapped the yukkuri. We made a sweep outside and destroyed any nest that had yukkuri in them. I know it was a horrible thing to do, but they didn’t belong here and they were a threat. We approached the forge but Thomas shook his head, he cupped his mouth with his hand and began to whisper.
“There’s another way inside, we should take it since they are probably waiting to ambush us. Yukkuri are dumb but not that dumb.”
“What should we do?”
“There is an entrance out back, I’ll trick them into thinking we leave and we’ll take care of them.”
“WELL LOOKS LIKE WE GOT RID OF ALL THE YUKKURI, WE SHOULD GO BACK HOME!” Thomas yelled and he stomped away only to tiptoe back. His plan seemed to work since we started hearing voices in the shed.
“Uneasy mister humans are gone.”
“Myon will check for casualties, myon.”
“Dosu is safe.”
Me and Thomas hid around the corner of the building and watched as the Youmu went out and was shocked at the aftermath. I unloaded my shotgun and put slugs in, I have heard how dangerous a Dosu can be and I’d rather not risk getting killed. We then went around the back and opened the back door. The Youmu became hysterical and all the yukkuri were focused on the front door rather than the back door. We sneaked our way behind the dosu. She was a Marisa and no doubt she was angry.
“Shitty mister human, Dosu will kill them”
I rolled my eyes and me and Thomas fired all our rounds into it. Paste flew all directions as the Dosu took one bullet after another Surprisingly we didn’t hit it’s paste core. It wheezed and breathed heavily. Thomas smiled as he pointed the firearm in it’s face.
“Take it easy on the other side.”
He shot the Dosu right in the paste core. Her guards were dumbfounded by our stealth. The cowards tried fleeing but I stopped them with overwhelming firepower. The more loyal yukkuri stayed and brandished jagged strips of metal. Thomas simply shot any yukkuri left in the shed. We looked around and as soon as the coast was clear we cheered.
“That’s right you balls of paste, that’s what you get for squatting on my land.”
“Yeah, who’s unstoppable?”
“We are.”
We managed to clean up the paste and put it all in a pile for the crows to peck at.
“Well thanks Chris, I’ll get started on those parts as soon as I can, I’ll call you when they are done.”
“Alright Thomas and hey buddy take it easy.”
I took back my handgun and went back to my truck, the day was still young and there was plenty of things to do. I went back home to wash up and change my clothes. While I have no yukkuri to bother me I went down to the local yukkuri shop. Today my friend Jeel was working behind the counter. She had tan skin, brown hair and was half my height.
“Oh Chris, what a surprise to see you here, I thought you said you weren’t getting any yukkuri?”
“Well yes, but I adopted some yukkuri and I need some beds and toys.”
“Well, let me show you where they are.”
Jeel then led me through the store. I saw different tanks with high prices.
“These are the gold badge yukkuri, well trained and well behaved.”
“Cost a lot, don’t you think?”
“Yes but the amount of training required to get yukkuri this badge is extensive, only few pass.”
We then went further down the aisle to see more moderate prices.
“These are the silver badge yukkuri, these yukkuri are behaved but poorly trained, they still make great pets.”
The we passed by tanks with dirt cheap prices.
“These are bronze and shithead yukkuri. They have little to no training and are mild mannered.
“Shitty Miss (Indian racial slur), bring Bawisa sweets, sweets.”
A Marisa called out. I stared wide eyed at the doughball’s vocabulary. Jeel gave the shithead a dark stare and reached in the tank. I watched as she started slapping the yukkuri while holding her by the braids. Paste and teeth flew one direction and the other with each slap.
“Don’t (SLAP) you (SLAP) ever (SLAP) call (SLAP) me (SLAP) that (SLAP) again”
“Yupi, stoop, stoop Bawisa is sorry.”
“Oh forget being sorry, take it easy friend.”
With that Jeel threw the yukkuri onto the ground and stomped it until is was just a smear. We continued until we came to the back of the store and found the toys and furniture.
“Well that was one way to handle it.”
“You see, If a yukkuri picks up on racial slurs or swears, I need to kill them because if they say that to a customer, it will make the store look bad.”
“I mean it really shocked me because you're so sweet, most of the time.”
“Yeah until PETY comes to protest and call me a bunch of racial slurs. I had to chase out one and pepper spray another one today. Cops caught them and charged them with attempted robbery.”
“Well at least it worked out in the end.”
“I just hope they don't come back.”
“Hey, just call me, I’ll get things under contol.”
“Thanks Chris, now choose what you need and bring it upfront, I’ll be waiting.”
I skimmed through the toys and furniture. I grabbed toy swords, foam blocks, a pet bed, some colorful tubes,a ball, a rubber carrot, and couple of pet bowls. I grabbed my items and heard some yelling upfront.
“I demand that you release the yukkuri you keep prisoner.”
“Please, I will lose all business if I do that, If you don’t want to buy anything then leave.”
“How about you release them (Racial Indian slur) or I’ll give you a pretty dam good reason.”
I see the pety member pull a knife on Jeel so I cocked my desert eagle and put it to his head. He froze up and I smiled as he dropped the knife in fear.
“Now listen here, I understand you mean well, but threatening my friend is not just, so get on the floor and put your hands on your head.”
He didn’t listen so I pressed the gun harder against his skull.
“DOWN ON THE GROUND, NOW!”
Jeel went to her phone and dialed 911. Soon enough police came and arrested the man. After a couple minutes of questioning the police book the pety member and I continued with my shopping.
“Thanks Chris, I owe you, big time.”
“No problem, just protecting my friends.”
“Alright lemme just add a discount to this and that will be 25.78.”
I hand her the cash and she bagged my goods.
“Oh Chris.”
“Yeah?”
“If your free anytime on the weekend, could you give me a call and go out sometime soon?”
“How about my place for dinner later.”
She blushed and I wave goodbye. I head to a furniture store to make a quick purchase of a child’s bed. Now that I have everything I go back home to set up the room Satori and Youmu. I grabbed the phone and dialed Tammie.
“Hi, Tammie could you bring Satori and Youmu back to the house, ugh huh, thanks.”
I waited for a couple minutes and sure enough Tammie pulled up with Satori and Youmu. Satori was the first greet me
“Mister Chris!”
“Hii Satori, missed me?”
“Satori always misses mister Chris.”
Tammie then came over with Youmu in her hands.
“Myon, mister Chris.”
“Oh. hi Youmu.”
“Myon, Youmu loves mister so much.”
I brought them inside so I can have a quick chat with Tammie.
“Thanks for watching them. I got a lot of stuff down and the project has just began. I just need to wait until the parts are manufactured.”
“Well that a relief to hear, I’ll just head back home, take care and call if you need anything.”
Tammie then drove off as I went back inside. Satori and Youmu were waiting at the door for me to come back inside. I clapped hands together as they watched me with their big eyes.
“Now I just furnished a room for you two, come check it out.”
“Yuwahhh, don’t keep Satori waiting.”
“Myon, Youmu wants to see.”
I led the two to their room, they were astonished by the toys and beds.
I felt happy watching them try their beds and play with their toys.
“Satori is very happy, Satori has easy place now.”
“Myon, Youmu too.”
“Well I’m glad you like it, now how about I start cooking dinner and then we can take it easy.”
I went to the kitchen with my too yukkuri following behind. They seem to watch me boil a pasta sticks and start preparing the sauce and meatballs. Satori was the most interested, she was eying me again.
“Satori can read mister’s heart, mister seems to be passionate with cooking.”
“Yeah, my mom showed how to cook, without her I’d be buying microwave meals.”
“Myon does mister still see mister’s mommy?”
“Sometimes.”
I let the pot boil the sauce and pasta for a bit while setting up a timer. I sat down on the couch with Youmu in my lap and I reclined back. I turned on the T,V and started watching history channel. As soon as I get comfy there was a knock at my door and I had to get up to check. Sure enough Jeel was outside.
“Hey Jeel how are you?”
“Good, today was a slow day at work, oh my are these your yukkuri they are so adorable.”
“Yeah that’s…”
“Satori and Youmu, don’t forget Chris I work at a yukkuri pet store.”
“Well dinner isn’t ready yet, are you okay with ground beef?”
“Oh Chris you should know by now I don’t follow the Hindu religion.”
“Oh okay just wait in the living room while I set up the table.”
I went to set up the table while Jeel went to interact with the yukkuri.
“Satori likes miss, she has an easy heart.”
"Oh... thank you."
"Myon, Miss play with Youmu?”
“Okay, see the carrot, fetch the carrot Youmu.”
Jeel then throw the rubber carrot down the hall for her to chase. I came back into the living room and me and Jeel had a chat.
“So you have a bodied yukkuri, they are pretty rare. I wish I could get a bodied Flandre, they are great helpers.”
“Yeah, I saved Satori from the streets.
”
“Mister Chris is Satori’s hero.”
“Wow, well I hope you get your badges soon.”
I scratched the back of my head as she went on about badges.
“Why do yukkuri need badges?”
“So they can be identified as pets, plus if they have gold and silver badges they are safe from abusers since the abuse of a gold or silver yukkuri is punishable by law.”
“Where do I go to get a badge.”
“You’ll have to go to a yukkuri training center, you can easily get a bronze badge by having them follow simple commands, Sliver is a little more challenging because that’s for yukkuri who can do basic math, follow commands, and shows a level of understanding, Gold badges are for yukkuri who have a advanced vocabulary, are understanding, and show unique problem solving skills.”
“Do you think they’re ready?”
“They perhaps can get a bronze badge but a silver badge might be difficult.”
I was surprised to hear about this ranking system, being a technician, I never had done much research on these yukkuri. My timer starts ringing and I finish up cooking.
“Spaghetti and meatballs get them while they’re hot.”
Jeel takes her seat and Satori stands on top of the chair while Youmu is unable to get up on top of the table.
“Sorry Youmu, I got you a pet bowel because you can’t really sit at the table.”
"Myon, it's okay mister, Youmu will eat from floor."
She didn't seem to care. She just wanted to eat her spaghetti
We all ate our Spaghetti and all enjoyed it. After it was done I had to wipe Youmu’s face clean and Satori’s they seemed pretty happy with their meal. Jeel stayed for awhile and talked about how she became owner of her shop. I listened as we watched MTV while the yukkuri played with their toys. After an hour Jeel decided to go home.
“Well Chris it was nice hanging out, just call me if you want to hang out a little bit more.”
“Thanks for coming over, you have a goodnight Jeel."
“Good night Chris.”
With that she left, I checked the time and decided to put the yukkuri to bed.
“Alright time for bed.”
“Does Satori, have to sleep.”
“Yes.”
I looked over to Youmu who already was asleep, strange too, I swore she was just awake a second ago. Satori flopped onto the ground and lifted her arms up.
“Carry me mister.”
I smiled and carried her in my arm along with Youmu. I put Youmu in her bed and stroked her hair.
“Goodnight Youmu.”
I then brought Satori to her bed and tucked her in.
“Goodnight mister, Satori loves you.”
