We have a HUGE issue, and I thought I would pass this along in case
anyone else attempts to use coupons in uStore. After having XMPie
investigate some issues we were having it was discovered, and pointed
out in the documentation that once a coupon is used once by a user, it
can't be used again. IE generic 10 percent discount coupon storewide
becomes invalid after the first person uses it for an order, and can't
be used by any subsequent users. Shame on me for thinking checking
"unlimited" in set up means that it can be used an unlimited number of
times for all users for a certain time period. I'v submitted this as a
feature request, now I have about 30 angry customers I have to deal
with.

So you were trying to have the same coupon used by multiple users?
I assume that if you assign an unlimited coupon to UserA, then he can
use it as many times as he wants.

Can someone verify Dan's assumption? So you need one coupon for each customer? I have not used coupons yet but we just had a customer ask about this and it would be great to know.

Thanks

There is indeed a column named "UserID" in the "Coupon" table in the
uStore SQL table, which holds the user ID of the first person having
used a particular coupon.

As soon as somebody uses a coupon, the "Coupon is not applicable for
this order" message will raise to anybody else trying to use the same
one.

"Unlimited till expires" in uStore Admin means that, e.g., should a
$100 coupon be defined, and should $20 orders be placed by a uStore
user, 5 separate orders can be placed, until the coupon gets unusable.
It does not mean the coupon can be shared by different users.

I'm not understanding the thought process involved with using coupons this way. There should be a way to define a storewide discount available to ALL users without having to generate hundreds of unique coupons. It just doesn't make sense, it goes against just about every other webstore out there. I'm really hoping a work around can be found.

Bill,
Would you know or maybe someone can chime in, is there a way to have an automatic query fire up and return that UserID value to NULL whenever it is written, I've found if I manually change it to null then the coupon becomes valid again and can be used. If I could somehow automate the process, that would save me a TON of grief.

You could probably get a MS-SQL trigger and stored procedure to accomplish
this.

Ugly hack, but doable.

I understand that, by design, a coupon is something assigned to an
individual user, and cannot be shared by multiple users.

A promotional code, on the opposite, could be shared, but it appears
that this concept is not implemented yet in uStore; feel free to
discuss this with your Xerox or XMPie representative, as he/she can
certainly add your own demand to an existing feature request.

BTW, I would think twice before writting anything into the uStore
database, through neither the GUI nor the API: this can be hazardous
at both the technical and legal points of view (do not overlook the
risk that your configuration would become no longer supported).

I guess there are different definitions for coupons. When I think of a coupon I think of what's in the newspaper or what I get in emails from online stores. The way XMPie handles coupons is assigning them to an individual user, this seems foreign to me. XMPie was able to provide a temporary solution for me. Promo Codes be included in an upcoming uStore release, not 4.0. these will allow you to distribute one code that can be shared by multiple users. Thanks all for your help on this!

Just to set things right, a coupon in uStore can be used individually
by ONE user only. It isn't and wasn't meant to be a promo code (in
that case it would have been called promo code).
Promo code is a known feature request, and this thread shed light
about its importance.
Nevertheless, promo codes will not come in uStore 4.0, and no one at
this stage can say when it will come or on which version, regardless
of what Michael heard, which apparently is a mistake.

I ran into the same problem when we were trying to give users a
promotion. So I did find one solution that seems to work well. This
wouldn't work for a 10% off your whole order but if you just want to
put a promotion on a certain product. I created a new global product
property and made it a checkbox and configured to be used in pricing
calculation. Then I just added it to the products that I wanted to run
a special on. So that way they see the regular price when they first
pick the item, but then when they get to the end they see the cheaper
promotional. So for our case we were running a 5% discount on a
specific product so then I just put in the pricing a negative number
on those products to produce the discounted price.

Its not as good as a promotional code, but still gives the user a
sense that they are getting a discount during their shopping cart
experience.

I could have just changed all the product pricing to reflect the
discount, but this way I can leave the product pricing the same and
then when the promotional period is over, then I can just remove the
global product property instead of reconfiguring all the pricing
again. Plus the customer can see the regular prices if they are
questioning whether or not they got their discount.
