I have just been notified that the Executive Committee for the 2010
ICM has appointed Hendrik Lenstra to be the chair of the PC. Other
members of the PC will remain anonymous until after the ICM. Two
members of the Executive Committee, Cheryl Praeger and Ragni Piene,
have contacted me and asked that all members of the Women in Math
group contact Lenstra as individuals with suggestions for panel
chairs, panel members and speakers.

It is my understanding that suggested speakers need to be supported
with strong letters by those of you who are top mathematicians, but
that all of us could easily influence the selection of panel members
and chairs. We need only recommend well known mathematicians who are
supportive of women or supportive of particular top notch women who
might qualify as ICM speakers. As discussed in the Alexander-Taylor-
Uhlenbeck letter, the best panelist supporting a woman is not
necessarily a woman. Remember also that it is not enough to choose
a panelist who can think of good women when asked to think of women,
but who will fairly evaluate a woman when she in competition with men
in her peer group.

Cheryl and Ragni also remind us that we should check the IMU-Net
newsletter regularly by subscribing at

This is our chance to seriously make a difference. Feel free to post
on the women in math group suggesting panelists in addition to
contacting Lenstra directly:

Please also ask men to suggest supportive panelists.

For the list of panelists in 2006 please see:

Notice that it is especially important to recommend panelists for
particular sections and to recommend panelists of a similar caliber.

I don't think it is particularly important to mention that you are a
woman or that you are selecting a panelist based partly on his ability
to judge women fairly.
