I would like to open up a discussion of the ongoing AMS election.

To start, let me note that one of the candidates for president
supports the AMS Fellows Program. This program is likely to be very
helpful to women in second tier departments who are top quality
mathematicians that are unrecognized by their deans as exceptional.
Getting such recognition could lead to a distinguished professorship
or even a belated promotion to full professor, ranks which not only
provide higher salaries but also more research funding and released
time. The AMS has done well by women in recent years, inviting them
to give key addresses, and it is likely to be fairly even handed when
selecting the fellows as well.

As mentioned in the Alexander-Taylor-Uhlenbeck letter "if committees
are more likely to choose a woman when they are also choosing five
men, we need more prizes awarded to multiple recipients." The AMS
Fellows program would have multiple recipients in every subfield of
mathematics.

While I have nothing against the other candidate for AMS president, he
makes no mention of support for this program. So I am voting for
*Andrews for AMS president*.

Please feel free to comment and post your own ideas for an office on
the ballot.

Yes, I do have a comment.

George Andrews is disdainful of the mathematics education community.
Many people in the AMS have worked hard to cooperate with this
community, and feel that cooperation is essential (Hy Bass made this
a priority of his administration), but I expect that George Andrews
would make these connections very difficult to maintain.

I can't imagine that there's anyone in the AMS who is not supportive
of the Fellows program. People do not mention everything in their
statements. They can't.
