A few hours back, reports on Github, Vimeo and 30 other websites being banned in India started to pour in (citing security issues, in the context of terrorism). I first thought this had to be a hoax. But I was not able to access github.com on the Aircel network with the message that this website had been banned because of high court orders. It seems some internet service providers have indeed started to ban these websites! What is the government thinking!

You can use Google's DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 IIRC) to circumvent this.

It's a rather silly move; blocking content hosting sites just because they may have a tiny amount of terrorism-related content (at the same time, Fscebook and twitter, which are used to great effect by ISIS for recruitment and propaganda, are kept open)

The choice of banning GitHub is especially funny, since the majority of people who use GitHub can easily circumvent this ban via DNS or otherwise.

Still, this entire thing is rather stupid; it's like they actively want to stop progress :/

This
"These are all providing very dangerous kind of cut and paste services..You can take code, cut it, paste it, remove it, delete it," said one government official who requested anonymity.

@Gelli: It's only banned by some ISPs right now (mostly on mobile networks), but according to the news they are supposed to ban it from all ISPs (just that they might not have gotten around to it yet)

@Saurabh: O_o. Next thing you know, they'll be banning keyboards with a Ctrl key.

I wish we could get something like the DMCA in India. It's not perfect, but it's better than the current "block half the internet in response to a copyright claim" way stuff goes now
