 | West Norwood Library/Cinema: update There have been a number of comments on social media recently about the opening of the new West Norwood Picturehouse and Library and we can shed a little light (but only a little) on progress of the works. Norwood Forum joined the Cinema-Library steering group on a recent site visit and although sadly we were not able to take photographs we can say that the library, courtyard and cinema spaces are progressing well. When completed it will be an impressive development which in addition will include a café, bar and a community space. The overall works are at an advanced state but there has been some slippage, especially due to the removal of dangerous materials and a replacement floor being required in part of the building. This week we are seeing the roof over the main entrance and cinema area being worked on with the aim of making the building weathertight.
We understand that plans are well developed for the library to move across to the new building with effect January 2018 and we will let you have further firm news on all this once we have it.

 | 6 Lansdowne Hill: pre-planning application consultation
In its most recent revision of the Council's Master Plan for West Norwood , the area behind Iceland and B&Q was identified as as an opportunity for redevelopment as a new retail and business hub (MDO site 18). Developers have been buying up plots and developing plans over recent years, and Leyton Clubs Ltd. have now surfaced publicly with plans for a mixed use development on part of the site running north from 6 Lansdowne Hill. A planning application is in the course of preparation and views of local people are sought via a public consultation meeting on Tuesday 31 October (3.30-7.30 pm) at the Salvation Army (see leaflet here). Please do go along to find out more about the proposals and let us know what you think. Norwood Forum will discuss the possibility of a wider public meeting on this issue with colleagues at Norwood Planning Assembly.
When: Tuesday, 31 October 3:30-7:30pm Where: Salvation Army 246 Norwood Road SE27 9AW

 | Quietways: update
The Quietways saga continues. You may remember that this was a project set up by Transport for London (TfL) under the previous administration, who set up the routes and refused to re-consider them. Many of the more ridiculous proposals were discarded following objections from the local community and their councillors. Over the summer there were a number of meetings with groups such as local businesses and the allotment holders, as well as a public meeting which led to some changes being made. A consultation and detailed feedback from Council officers is available -lambeth.gov.uk/quietway7 - where you can provide feedback until Sunday 5 November 2017. Local councillors have arranged for a public meeting to ensure residents have further opportunities to discuss the designs with them and look at hard copies of the plans. It will be held on Saturday 21 October. More information will follow, but here is the link to sign up if you would like to attend. - http://quietway7cllrmeeting.eventbrite.co.uk/

 | Lambeth Local Plan review 2017: survey
Lambeth Council has begun the process of a partial review of the 2015 Local Plan for the borough by setting up a consultation process.
The Council says “the existing Local Plan, adopted in 2015, contains a strong vision for the development of the borough to improve opportunities for local people. It sets the planning policies for the borough and much of it is still up to date and effective. However, changes to national planning law and policy, a full review of the London Plan and changes in Lambeth mean parts of our Local Plan need to be reviewed. We also need to ensure we meet our borough-wide priorities of inclusive growth, reduced inequality and strong and sustainable communities. Our updated Lambeth Local Plan, together with the Mayor of London’s London Plan and neighbourhood plans, will set out the vision and robust planning policies needed to direct and guide development in the borough over the next 15 years to meet our future needs.”
The process will take about two years to complete, but now is the time to start getting involved as the consultation is open until 4 December 2017. Let the Council have your views by either completing the On-line survey, by Email or by post to: Planning Strategy and Policy Team, London Borough of Lambeth, 1st Floor, Phoenix House, 10 Wandsworth Road, London, SW8 2LL.

 | Norwood Planning Assembly: survey
More locally, than the Lambeth plan will be the Neighbourhood Plan for Norwood, which will be developed by local residents through The Norwood Planning Assembly in order that we can have a greater say in building and development in our area. The Assembly was set up jointly by the Norwood Forum and the Norwood Action Group and in order to determine the views of the community, We would like you take a short on-line survey: “What do you think are the priorities for improving Norwood?” . Please take a moment to complete thesurvey and let us know.

Greening West Norwood
The Greening West Norwood group is going from strength to strength. After the successful cleaning of the alley way in Rothschild Street, the next project will be the corner of Chapel Road and Knight's Hill. Last Saturday another session was held on building planters at the Library of Things (see photo above). and at least one new planter is already built and on a local street. Some of our Committee members have already got stuck in and are very enthusiastic about the project.
There’s also a newly formed Friends of West Norwood Station group which aims to 'adopt' West Norwood station and potentially create and sustain new community gardens around the station. An initial meeting is to be held on Wednesday 1 November 2017 at the pub next to the station - The Great North Wood at 7pm for 7:15pm for one hour.
When: Wednesday, 1 November 7pm Where: The Great North Wood 3 Knight's Hill SE27 0HS

 | Know your Norwood - Hiram Maxim (1840 –1916)As you enter West Norwood cemetery past the Lodge you will find on your right-hand side the grave of Hiram Maxim one of the world’s greatest inventors and a resident of West Norwood. He installed the first electric lights into a New York city building, entering into a long dispute with Thomas Edison about who was the true inventor of the electric light bulb. He experimented with airplanes in the 1890’s and to raise money for this venture created "Sir Hiram Maxim's Captive Flying Machines", a fairground ride which is still operating in Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach where it is one of the oldest rides in Europe. He held patents on the mouse-trap, hair-curling irons, the first automatic fire sprinkler, a pocket menthol inhaler for asthma sufferers, and numerous other devices.
Arguably his most successful invention was the Maxim Machine Gun, the first gun to use the power of the recoil to load the next cartridge. His initial experiments were in the back garden of his house in Thurlow Park and he thoughtfully ran an advert in the local press warning neighbours about the noise and possibility of broken windows. He died in 1916 profoundly deaf from all the gun fire he was exposed to and during the Great War where the gun he invented was in widespread use by both sides. He knew that this would be his major legacy and it saddened him.
