[This topic was re-posted on May 20th 2012 to provide updated directions for using the new FG2 WFRP3 Ruleset v1.3]

To play WFRP3 virtual through Fantasy Grounds II, you will need the following:

  • Fantasy Grounds II
    • The FG2 installer can be downloaded here
    • FG2 requires the GM and/or players to purchase of a license to play, and can be purchased here

  • The latest WFRP3 Ruleset for Fantasy Ground II
    • Download and place the ruleset in the folder you have installed FG2 (For ex: C:\Program Files\Fantasy Grounds II)
    • Download and read the documentation for the ruleset

  • WFRP3 Ruleset Libraries/Modules
    • Your GM/host may need you to install libraries/modules.  Libraries/modules are additional set of rules or adventures coded by your GM for the ruleset. You will need to place those libraries/modules in the following folders:
      • C:\Users\USER NAME OF YOUR WINDOWS ACCOUNT\AppData\Roaming\Fantasy Grounds II\modules\ for Windows 7
      • C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Fantasy Grounds II\modules\  for Windows XP
      • The WFRP3 Ruleset comes with a standard library
      • My own WFRP3 expanded library can be downloaded here, and replace the standard library in the modules folder:  WFRP v3 - Library.mod

  • a VOIP software such as Skype or Mumble (for low bandwidth connections)
  • LogMeIn Hamachi Unmanaged
    • LogMeIn Hamachi is not required to play through FG2, but the GM and players hosting FG2 may then need to tweak their firewall and internet router settings. Hamachi creates a virtual private network that circumvents the firewall and allows players to connect easily to the GM. Basically, Hamachi makes it simpler!
    • Make sure you download and install the unmanaged version
      • The GM/host will install, update and launch Hamachi and "create a new network", with a unique Network ID.  He will also receive a unique IP address associated with that Network ID.  Future launch of Hamachi will reconnect the network previously created.
      • All players will install, update and launch Hamachi. They will need to "join an existing network" and enter the Network ID provided by the GM/host.
      • Once the players have joined the GM/host Hamachi network, the GM/host can then launch FG2 and "load" his campaign as usual, nothing more is required on the GM/host end.
      • The players can then launch FG2, and click "join game". They will enter in the host address field of FG2 the direct IP address of the GM/host Hamachi network, and click "start"

Cheers

All,

Fantasy Grounds 2 has released v2.9 of its software. There seems to be no problems between v2.9 and Neil's ruleset, and I have personally updated. Keep in mind that you need the same version as your GM, so check with him/her first.

To update, you need to click "Check for Update" and let it run for a while. For those who only have the demo version of Fantasy Grounds 2, you may need to download and re-install the software.

Cheers

Am i right in thinking that if you have an ultimate licence then players can connect to you for free

yes - if the GM has an ultimate licence as many players with a demo (free) version of FG2 can connect to the GM.

A full licence only allows players with a player / lite licence to connect (I think there may be an allowance of one or two guest slots but am not sure).

The most economic way seems for the GM to hold the ultimate licence (and whether or not players contribute to the cost is up to your group).

Others may correct me on this.

Cheers,

Adam

Alp is mostly right,

  • A full license allows players with at least a lite license (i.e. player license) to connect to you. As far as the FG2 website indicate, there are no allowance.
  • An ultimate license allows any players to connect, including players with the demo (free) client of FG2 to connect to the GM.
If you have a group of less than 7 players, and all are open to buy the Lite license, then the bundle of a Full + up to 7 Lite licenses is cheaper than an Ultimate license. However, if some of your players decide to leave the group, you will need your new players to buy a Lite license at the full price. It makes it harder to recruit.

Hi Skellan,

Yes - you can install the demo version  of FG2, the WFRP 3rd ruleset, any libraries out there that you need (on this group).  Follow the instructions to get the files in the right places.

Then load FG2, create a new campaign and play around.  You can only play on your PC - 1 GM session and 1 PC session running (2 instances of FG2 on the same PC).

Alternatively do all the above and join one of the frequent demo sessions as a PC - usually arranged by Ceodryn - It is really a great medium.  I will get my ultimate licence soon - even though I will probably only use it to play as a PC.

Cheers,

Adam

Ok -bought the full FG license and downloaded the WFRP ruleset -when I activate the upgrade (didn't find any documentation to read) I get following mention: install version of .NET framework v4.0.30319....   say what?!
Oh boy.

Are you running Windows XP or Windows 7? In both case however, you may want to do launch Windows Update (Start -> All Programs -> Windows Update), then Check for Update, and make sure you install the latest .NET framework.

Also, FG2 has its own board for such installation issues, called The House of Healing.

Is your system's .NET full up to date?  Do you see anything listed for .NET when you run 'Windows Update'?

The .NET upgrade helped -thanks Ceodryn/Aspects.
Another issue: apparently FG did not install correctly -"could not load ruleset rootfile (base.xml)"
Went through whole installation proces after .NET upgrade -but still got this error
Anybody what happened?

Do you get the error when you first trying to launch the Fantasy Grounds or when you try to load one of the demo campaigns?

Joe.

Joe has the right question. It sounds like a ruleset issue, not fg2 issue. What ruleset or demo campaign were you opening?

Also, make sure to update fg2 to the latest patch by clicking on "check update" within fg2.

Wonder! I still get answers -kind of feared to be written off as some kind of IT hypochondriac :)
Although I less than half understand what transpires in this group I have to give you guys a big thumbs up for support!

Joe, the error popped up during first launch of FG ruleset -first time I ignored it, and FG kind of was installed on my pc.
After I did a .NET upload I uninstalled and reinstalled the whole game as I thought that the installation error was also .NET related -which it turned out not to be.

Hi Dieter, ok to clarify your answer: when you click on the cream color dice icon representing FG2 error, that's when you get that base.xml error?

After getting that error, are you however able to continue the launch of FG2? If so, are you able to click on "check for updates"?

I am thinking that one of the ruleset that comes with fg2 has not installed properly and may create that error, but that fg2 itself is functioning.

It seems the most common reason for  ruleset errors after first installing is for some reason the demo campaigns didn't get installed or were corrupted. You can go to Fantasy Ground's download page [http://www.fantasygrounds.com/downloads/] and download the demo campaigns.   You'll find a download link in the "DEMO VERSION" section. After unzipping the file, you should find a README.txt file.  Open and read the README.txt file for instructions for installing the demo campaigns.  After that try relaunching Fantasy Grounds.

keeping my fingers crossed for ya,
  Joe.

Hey guys,

somehow FG doesn't seem to work for me... (a pitty as I think it's visually the better one)
so I started experimenting a little bit with maptools. managed to install 1.3.b87 and even load the wfrp campaign set. hoping to catch up on a intro session real soon.

Hilarious.
No sooner had I given up on FG II and a last desperate attempt worked: I've managed to open the wfrp3ed 1.4.1 ruleset.

Cheers, now you have both fg2 and maptool installed, best if config :)

I'll run an intro to fg2 in early jan, life too busy right before the holidays.

Library is missing the cards for the Amber Wizard Beastforms.

Or at least, I can't find them.

They arent in indeed. There wasnt a place for them back when. Now, I guess they could be coded as retainers.

May not be able to fix this one: Ogres get +1 soak with their racial, but this doesn't calculate in.

Closest to a fix would be a 1 soak, 0 encumbrance "Big Sexy Belly" item I guess? :-)

That's exactly what I did for Troll Slayers. I created an item to reflect their soak/defense. Neil could code the racial in maybe but the library cannot do that.

Ogre "Fearless" ability is named "Night Vision" in your library.

When I close my Ogre and close the program and open it up the next day or whatever, it clears the Talent slots. Whatever was there, Talents or Diseases, are gone from the sheet entirely.

Worse yet, it seems to still think I have the Talents, as I cannot just give them to the character again and re-slot them. I can re-slot other Talents though.

Trying to clear them, re-slot them in any order or whatever does not return the previously equipped now lost talents to their proper state.

This only seems to happen on an Ogre (not humans or dwarfs).

Enjoy! :-D

Can you report that to Neil page? The library doesn't code races, that's the rule set.
