Merthyr Leopard when the photo was taken i think i might have taken it

in the Aberdare area.

Further thoughts about this.  There was (still is ?) a discount store at Hirwaun, which ISTR was served by a free bus service from Aberdare (run by one of the local operators) during the 1990s.  Somewhere I believe I have a photo.

 

Could your photo have been the precursor to this, run  by the store itself ?

FAW 127D ex Chivers, Brynmawr 3/81, to Cash, Tredegar (Q) c4/82

and the vehicle on the right would be one of

FNY 988/90/2K ex Cynon Valley 3/81; 988 to Wigley, Carlton (Qs) by5/82; 990 to Hand, Horsley (H1z) and 992 to Hand, Horsley (H1) both by12/82.

Other vehicles operated were Bd YRQ CRP 2K (in 8/80, out c11/82) and Ld PSU3s ARN 599,605C (in 10/81, out by12/82).

This bus was a bit of an issue when I took over as Manager at Merthyr Tydfil in 1980. Vehicles were sold by Public Tender and when this bus turned up in Merthyr operating a free service abstracting traffic from the Council's buses some Council Members wanted to restrict the sale of buses to people not based in the Borough. However, nothing came of the suggestion.

As far as I recall the Dowlais store was the only one involved. It later became a Quick Save store and then closed down before being fire damaged. Not sure if anything is there now.

 

Further to my previous message, part of the problem was that it was operating in MTCBC livery with the fleetnames painted out.However the owner readily agreed to repaint it when the problem was raised with him so a tricky problem was resolved quite quickly.
