detecting changes to edit/new forms

I am using the standard new/edit forms generated by SQLFORM.smartgrid.

These forms has a Back button, that discards any change to the form when pressed. 

Is there a way to detect that a user edited any of the fields, and show an alert where user can choose to submit the form instead of discarding  changes ?
