Referral Program using sessions

Hi,

I am working on a referral system in which I would be able to track signups given a referral url. Let us say someone open www.zumbl.com/?u=2102 and then the user signups or login, using this unique URL, I need to create an entry into the database.

Is there some way I can do this use using sessions? I am using multiple login methods including google, facebook.
