Want More Bike Lanes In Ypsilanti? – Please Attend The Tuesday, August 16th City Council Meeting!!! ! –  7pm at Ypsilanti City Hall, 1 South Huron Street – This is the LAST step in the approval process for a Forest Avenue bike lane so please consider attending!!!

The City of Ypsilanti Non-Motorized Advisory Committee is proposing the completion of an east-west bike lane route on Forest Avenue between Prospect Road and Norris Street. Bike lanes already exist to the east and west of this gap. The bike lane would not involve any new construction, only pavement painting. While the creation of a bike lane on Forest Avenue would remove parking spots on the north side of the road, surveys have show that vehicles rarely use these spots.

Besides just attending the meeting, what REALLY helps is just saying a few words in support of Forest Avenue bike lanes at the “Audience Participation” session at the start (agenda item #4) of the meeting. A simple statement of “I bicycle in town and want more bike lanes so I can safely ride my bike in Ypsilanti” would be all a person needs to say. You do not need to stay for the whole meeting (you can probably make a statement and be out of the building by 7:30pm). Also, if you want to make a comment, please sign the “Audience Participation” clipboard outside the City Council room before the meeting.

Around the country, and in Ypsilanti too, there are those who say bike lanes are not needed, that “nobody” will use them, are not safe for cyclists (???), that cyclists don’t “pay for roads” and that car parking spots are more important than a place for someone to ride a bike. Please attend this hearing on August 16th to let the City know that bike lanes are important and needed to give cyclists a safe place to ride!
