Hello all!

GetDowntown and TheRide are getting ready to launch Conquer the Cold.  Conquer the Cold is an event, a contest, and a way to keep people inspired to do cold weather commutes all winter long.

The theme of Conquer the Cold is #OwnWinter.

We would love your #OwnWinter hints and tips that we can share with other commuters!

We are looking for short tips, graphics, videos, whatever you think will inspire people to #OwnWinter this year.

You can either send your tips directly to me or wait until November 1 and just post them with the #OwnWinter hashtag and also tag @getdowntown or @catchtheride.

Also, have any particular resources you use that you think others could benefit from related to winter biking or walking?  Send them my way.

Thanks for your support!

I was looking for the other noted city with lots of winter cyclists, which they mention in this page - Oulu Finland.  Search for that and you'll find dozens of pictures of people biking in winter.

It should be an El-Nino-mild winter, but the Beaufort Sea has no ice again this year, so we'll see.  Who'da thunk that an early effect of climate change would be real winters in Michigan again?!?

One of my all time favorite tips for winter commuting is using some simple cheap car wax and waxing your bike frame of your commuter bike.  Nothing fancy, just a simple waxing, especially on the lower parts of the frame.  This helps shed all the moisture and wet slush, salt, etc., off of your frame easily.

1) The film series on the Copenhagenize.com site that Ken Clark sent around is well worth viewing.

2) Visibility of bicyclists (to vehicle drivers) is always an issue in winter months of low morning/evening light. Many of use front and rear lights, but visibility from the side is still often problematic, especially when crossing a four-way intersection with vehicles approaching from the left and right perpendicular. I add extra reflectors to my bike wheels, put some reflective tape on side-facing parts of the frame, use tires w/ reflective sidewalls, and wear a safety vest, for which I've provided a link below.  These vests are inexpensive, light weight, durable, fit over any winter coats, and really do make you more visible to drivers!
