Advocates for walking, hiking and bicycling can encourage the Walled Lake government to continue their membership on the Michigan Airline Trail.  Everyone should support efforts to develop the Michigan Airline Trail through Commerce, Walled Lake and Wixom.
See the link below to Oakland Press article and letter from Nancy at Michigan Trails and Greenways.  I will be attending the meeting on Weds. at Walled Lake fire station.  Commerce Twp Supv. Dave Scott and my advocate group have met to organize strategy.

ACTION NEEDED FOR MICHIGAN AIRLINE TRAIL

CALL TO ACTION: MICHIGAN AIRLINE TRAIL

March 1, 2017

Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance needs our members and friends of trails to actively support the continued development of the newly acquired Michigan Airline Trail within Walled Lake as the city prepares to vote on a resolution to withdraw from the trail council managing this trail.

The Michigan Airline Trail through Commerce, Walled Lake and Wixom was officially acquired in February. The 5.34 mile trail is a critical link in Oakland County’s region-wide non-motorized trail system, as well as an important part of 250+ miles Great Lake to Lake Trails from South Haven to Port Huron.

The three communities formed a trail management council approximately 7 years ago in order to plan, acquire, develop and maintain the trail. Throughout this time the communities have been working together to make the trail a reality.

Now that the trail has been acquired, the trail council starts the planning for the development and maintenance. It is at this current phase that Walled Lake has decided to issue a resolution to resign from the trail council, because they do not feel it is in the best interest of taxpayers. The city will address this resolution at its March 15, 2017 City Council meeting.

Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance’s experience with trails and trail groups throughout the state has taught us that there are many avenues available to raise the money required for Walled Lake’s 1.5 miles of trail; such as an endowment, use of grants, fundraising, and volunteer groups that would not depend on their local tax base. Additionally, the timeline for future improvements to the trail can be controlled by the city.

As a Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance member and trail advocate, you know the many benefits of multi-use trails, especially in areas where the landscape is already built out, as in this case. We must continue the realization of this asset for its transportation, recreation, health, economic development, and other quality of life benefits.  Time and again, trails have been at the top of the list for amenities people desire in a community.

The ability to use a rail bed to create a trail is not available in every community.  It is a wonderful opportunity that should not be wasted.  If you support this trail, as we expect you do, you have three opportunities to have your voice heard.

  • The Commerce, Walled Lake and Wixom Trailway Management Council is meeting March 8, 2017. It is held at the Commerce Townshipoffices (2840 Fisher Ave) at 3 p.m. and is open to the public. Council representatives from all three communities are at this meeting
  • The Walled Lake City Council is meeting on March 15, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Fire Station (1499 E West Maple). This meeting is especially important for trail advocates who reside in Walled Lake.
  • If you cannot make it to either meeting, please call Walled Lake City council, or send an email, to voice your concerns. This website will give you the information you need: http://walledlake.us/index.php/city-government/city-council

It is critical for the trail project to have a strong show of support to discourage Walled Lake’s passage of the resolution to withdraw from the trail council.  We appreciate anything you can do to join us in this effort.

Thank you,

Nancy Krupiarz
Executive Director
