USAO Western District of Washington

The positions will be located in the Criminal Division of the Western District of Washington. AUSAs in the Criminal Division prosecute federal criminal cases in the Western District of Washington. AUSAs in the Criminal Division advise federal law enforcement agents on criminal investigations, present criminal cases to the grand jury, try criminal cases before the United States District Court, and represent the United States in criminal appeals before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

The attorneys hired for these positions will be assigned a variety of criminal matters involving various areas of federal law. Candidates for the positions with prior cyber expertise are requested to describe their work in this area in their cover letter and resume.

USAO Northern District of Alabama

The Northern District of Alabama is currently seeking one or more attorney for a permanent Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in our Civil Division. This position will be located in the main office in Birmingham, Alabama. The Civil Division represents the United States in Civil Defensive cases, representing its agencies and employees at the trial and appellate levels in a wide variety of civil actions in federal and state courts. Civil Division AUSAs frequently defend employment discrimination cases, personal injury actions, medical malpractice claims arising out of treatment at a Veterans' Hospital or other federally-supported health facilities, challenges to agency determinations such as the denial of social security disability benefits, and decisions by the Immigration and Naturalization Service to deport or detain aliens. The division is also responsible for a broad range of other matters, including requests to amend records under the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act, appeals and/or challenges under the Administrative Procedure Act, and defense of government officials sued in their individual capacities.

The Civil Division also has an Affirmative Civil Enforcement Unit. This unit prosecutes civil actions to recover damages for healthcare and procurement fraud and other offenses against the United States and its agencies, imposes civil penalties for violations of the nation's health, safety and economic welfare laws under the False Claims Act. Typical healthcare fraud cases involve claims for payment submitted to Medicare by health care providers, claims for payment submitted by contractors government contracts, and claims by individuals for certain federal benefits. The employees in this unit work closely with Criminal Division AUSAs and other federal, state, and local agencies.

USAO District of Nebraska

The position is within the Criminal Division, Omaha, Nebraska. The Assistant U.S. Attorney will primarily be assigned to prosecute criminal cases, focusing specifically on drug trafficking, money laundering and firearm offenses. The caseload may also include a variety of other crimes prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's office, including other crimes of violence. Candidates with experience working with task forces composed of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to target large scale criminal organizations are encouraged to apply.

Following appointment, Assistant U.S. Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which they are appointed. See 28 U.S.C. § 545 for district-specific information.

This is a permanent position; however, all initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
