How do you remove the dryer in a stackable unit. It looks to me you have to take the drum out first but there must be an easier way.

The dryer sits on top of a stack unit.  If it is a truly stack unit and the machines are separate then you remove the front cover on the dryer (at chest height) below the dryer door and there will be bolts attaching it to the washer.  Some machines have brackets on the sides or back that attach the dryer to the washer so look for those also. The dryer is very light and can be taken off with two people fairly easily if you have enough space.  Then, you can begin the repair on the washing machine.

If you have a stack unit that is a one piece unit (unibody) then the two cannot be separated but the repair can still be made but the process is slightly different to access the drum.

Here is a sample of a truly stacked unit that can be separated:  http://www.unimac.com/media/17459/UT_OPL_E7_3-4R_586x784.jpg
