Does anyone have a short liturgy that they know of, or use, when the palms are burned for Ash Wednesday?

Hi Diane,

I thought that was an easy request to answer.

I can find no Episcopal or Anglican source of a liturgy for the burning of the Palms.  I did find a Methodist, Lutheran and Roman Catholic liturgy that might be of use.  Please see attached.

I am hopeful that someone will find that we also have a liturgy for the Palm burning.

I might be completely wrong on this, but it seems to me that burning the palms for ashes is preparing for the Ash Wednesday service rather than a public worship service in itself . . . more in the category of ironing the fair linen, polishing the silver, etc., which granted can be prayerful activities, but are not public worship and therefore would not have a specific liturgical form.

I agree in that our Altar Guild handles the preparation of the ashes.

At St. Augustine in Oklahoma City each year, I (as the verger) lead a children's chapel session during our 7:00 PM Ash Wednesday service.  During that chapel session, I burn the palms and we talk about why we burn palms for ashes and several Lenten traditions and their meanings.  The kids exit with me just before the reading of the lessons and we return for the Call to a Holy Lent and the Imposition of Ashes after the sermon.

No special liturgy or ceremony used.

Respectfully,

Darin K. Herndon

As our former Bishop, Keith Whitmore, instructed the Mark Emory Graham Chapter of the VGEC, unless it is in the BCP, there are no Authorized liturgies unless the Bishop authorizes one.  Everything needed to perform the duties in our liturgical tradition is contained within the BCP and there is no liturgy for the burning of the palms to prepare for the imposition of Ashes on Ash Wednesday.  That said, there is nothing wrong with using this preparation of the ashes as a lesson to both children and adults prior to the service. Indeed it is an opportunity not to be wasted.
