Hi Maxwell

Just an update on a couple of things we mentioned previously.

I did some more testing with external USB HDD and got it working OK. The issue is just getting enough power to run the HDD.
I was able to use a USB cable with a Y connection so that one plug connects to the router and the other to a separate USB power supply. That gives the HDD the power it needs to start up and it all runs OK.

I am not sure how much power that 128GB USB pen drives need to run - hopefully it is within the capability of the router's USB socket.

I have also started some work with running a micro Kiwix server on the routers so that it can serve the .zim files used for Wikipedia.
It is working OK for smaller .zim files, but still has some issues with the larger files. A work in progress...

Regards
Terry

I would be a bit careful about large pen drives. I am not sure that OpenWrt can handle the really big ones as yet, and they are quite expensive.

An alternate approach might be to use several smaller pen drives eg 64GB in a USB hub.

What sort of content do you plan to use?
Can you give me a link to the sort of content you want to use?

Keep in mind that the VT-RACHEL system only delivers simple static HTML/PDF content.
It does not have the processing power to deliver dynamic content.

Thanks Terry Probably a USB pen drive up to 500gb might be available on the market we can also try that out.

Hi Maxwell

I just did a quick test trying to use a USB HDD via a powered USB hub, but it did not work.
I tried a couple of HDDs in two different routers.

Not quite sure why it is not working, but it might be simpler to use a USB memory for your test.

I have also used SD memory cards in a USB adapter successfully.

Hi Maxwell

You should be OK with using a larger USB HDD to store the content, but the USB port on the MR3420 will probably not be able to supply sufficient power to run the HDD.
But you can use a powered USB hub between the HDD and the MR3420 to provide power for the HDD.

What Version is your MR3420?

Thanks very Much Terry for your wonderful explanation I am pretty sure I can be able to do   SECN 'sysupgrade' firmware,to  load an OpenWrt 'factory' version to tp link MR 3420
My other question Is I have seen alot of content for Rachel of line is there any possibilities I can load all the content into a 500GB external hardrive and connect to the TP Link for offline acces instead of a 64gb pen drive which will host only less content.
