Stephen - Did I see a comment that MP02s were available with external aerial sockets?
Might help me extend range.

Cheers

yes, they all have it.
It requires some soldering so it is better to order them with soldering already done.

If I was to wield a soldering gun, nothing would ever work again so I don't do it !!!

When you say 'already soldered' what do you mean please?
My present MP02's do not havean aerial socket. I need something to
direct;y plug an omni into.

Thanks

Hi Leonard

The standard MP02 is equipped with two chip antennas (main and rx) on the PCB, plus a UFL socket for the main antenna.

To use the UFL socket to connect an external antenna, you have to remove a surface mounted link on the PCB and move it to a new position to connect the UFL socket to the wifi system. This can be done if you have access to proper surface mount soldering equipment, but is problematic otherwise.

Steve is arranging with the manufacturer to make available an alternate version which has the links set up for the main antenna to use the UFL connector, and fitted with a pigtail and SMA connector mounted on the case, plus a 2dB removable antenna.

This will be added to the VT online shop site over the next couple of weeks, all going well.

Regards
Terry

We can do it.  The challenge for us is to keep the cost of such modifications in line with the cost of the MP2. As you can imagine, we don't have much margin on the MP2s.  They are essentially a commodity good.  So the additional labour involved in making modifications like this will add more than just a couple of dollars to the price.

We figure out a strategy for this and post back here.

Regards... Steve

Hi Steve

Apologies.

I thought from his earlier email that Edwin was making the external antenna set up as a standard build for the Dragino.

In any case, I don't think it would be unreasonable to charge up to $10 for the variant in small quantities.

Terry

Hi Terry, Leonard,

It turns out it that I am mistaken.  Edwin has generously agreed to make an external antenna (with SMA connector) version of the MP2 available at a modest cost.  You can order them at

Thanks for that. However the shop shows "out of stock" so I am unable to order

:-(

Thanks

Thanks - Just ordered a couple. One to go on top of the church tower.
I'll take a picture. Church Tower. Quintessential English Village. Couldn't get any different from an African context

Hi Leonard

It seems that there may be an issue with the VT Shop page and the new item is not showing up correctly.

Can you order from the link in Steve's email?  That seems to work OK for me.

Regards
Terry

Whilst awaiting delivery of the MP02's with aerial sockets, I decided to buy an aerial. Probably got totally the wrong one.

TP-Link TL-ANT2415D 2.4GHz 15dBi Outdoor Omni Directional Antenna

My amateur thinking says 15dBi seems powerful. It's almost 1.8metres high !

Can someone please tell me that I bought wisely and what additional cables I might need to fix this to the MP02

Thanks

Hi Leonard,

That should work.  You'll need a RP-SMA Female to N-Type Male Adapter Coaxial Pigtail Cable.  Something like this

They come in various lengths.  It is worth trying to keep this cable as short as possible to reduce signal loss.

Just keep in mind that 15 dBi is very high gain for an omni antenna, which means that the beam will be significantly flattened in the vertical direction.  This improves the range straight out from the antenna, while greatly reducing the signal directly above and below it.

If you think of a perfectly omnidirectional isotropic antenna as being like a sphere (0 dBi), or round “balloon” then higher gains have an effect much like pressing on the top and bottom of the balloon at the same time.  The more you squish it (higher gain), the flatter it gets, without changing the total volume (power).
