hello, I know it has been a bit since have chatted. Hope all is well.

I was wondering if this was a good time to look at some of the things
we need to do to get up to date and for those that are interested,
start preparing for next year.

So here are some of my thoughts aswell as updates to be aware of and
let me know what you all think and/ or who would be interested in
being involved in these:

1. I was wondering if we should get a meeting together to see if there
are anything we need to pull together to finalize anything from the
VTF and look at getting the process going for next year?

2. We may need to do some thankyou cards/ letters for organizations
who sponsored us or supported us in anyway.

3. Also, we are apparently got a bill from the security people that
came around at the college. Caroline at the college is keeping it
hush from the Rhodes director and is trying to fight it. I can not
remember the exact bill amount but it is around $500. i will keep you
all updated on this.

Anyway, those are some of the things I thought might be important to
let you all know and check out. talk to you all soon.

namaste,
Corey

While I don't know full details, my understanding at present is that
TAS will be receiving a donation of revenue from the Georgina Beyer
talk that is upcoming in early October. Perhaps TAS would donate from
those funds in order to cover or help cover the security bill if it
can't be fought off by Caroline?

Thank you cards sound like a very good idea to me.

I would welcome the opportunity to be involved in next year's forum in
any way that I can be helpful.

Sounds great all, it may be best to wait until October to get together to do some of that stuff.

As far as the update to the security bill.  It sounds like Caroline was not able to fight them off.  So I will find out exactly what the bill is.  Also, Caroline also said that Bee, the directer of Rhodes college, said she would like us to pay the bill or as much as possible.  But if we are not able to or only part of it.  that is ok.  My thinking is that I would like to pay as much as possible, as I would like to keep a good relationship with them.  And they are not the onés that make the decision in terms of the security bill.

Hey ya'll,

First off, sorry I've been so absent these days from the list...I've just been taking an extreme amount of self care time, slightly struggling with burn out, etc.

I do agree though that it's about time we got back together to look over with 20-20 hindsight our successes, missteps, & failures (you know the good, bad,and ugly haha). Also, love the idea Corey of sending out thank yous to sponsors, presenters, etc...let's do it!

I am free this sunday anytime as well as any evening next week.  Whatever works best for folks is cool with me.

To make things go a lil' smoother can I suggest we come up with an agenda beforehand?

The only other thing I wanted to know was whether Gwen (or anyone else) ever heard back from Dani.  I still feel strongly about that whole issue and want to know what's up.

Looking forward to seein' ya'll...it's been too long!

xoxo

P.S. I changed my name to Kay and am now exclusively using "they, them, &their" as pronouns...just an FYI :)

Hi Kay :)

Really glad you've taken the time for self care. Burnout is not a
pretty thing. Speaking from experience I'm afraid :(

Anyway, I talked to Dani and asked her directly if she was planning to
come back to the collective. Unfortunately, I didn't get a reply. If
there is anything else I can do, please let me know.

Hello all,

I agree self care is very important.  Glad to hear at the same time that you are ready to jump in once again.  :)

At this point I am leaning towards assuming that Dani is not returning.  If she does then we can deal with that at that time.

As far as the card writing, I am game to help out but this weekend is swamped with thanksgiving dinners, ect.  I am thinking maybe next sunday?

As far as the next time we got back together, I am wondering when and where everyone wants to meet?  I am sure there will be no problem meeting here at my place, as I am alot closer to down town, just off Ruprt stn.  Large front room.  or is it possible to get Spartacus books?

kewl, sunday works.  What time?

Thanks for asking that as I forgot all about that.  It is not that accessible.  it is not impossible but can be difficult for someone in a wheel chair.  As the front is in a bit of a valley, about 6 or 7 steps down and then 6 steps to the front door.  I think the one bathroom should be fine in terms of wheel chair accessible.  if someone wants to come by or ask some qustions and check it out, i would be fine with that.

So if this is an issue, let me know, as we can try another location or we can try to come up with something.

if we do decide on my place, my address is 3243 Matapan cr., Vancouver.

just throwing this out there: 12-13 steps is impossible, not just difficult :) Personally i think itd be better to do it at a place like Bump n Grind (commercial at venables, non gendered washroom, fully wheelchair accessible), The Whip (just of main and 5th, fully wheelchair accessible), Caffe Artigiano (west pender, apparently fully wheelchair accessible, though ive not been) or some other local public space thats accessible, even just to get in the door like Rhizome (broadway at kingsway, wheelchair accessible, non gendered washrooms, but the washrooms dont fit some scooters) or Cafe Deux Soleils (commercial and 5th, wheelchair accessible, but the gendered washroom stalls are not w/c accessible).

my 2c as someone who wont be coming if its up stairs unfortunately.

Hi Shannon,

I spoke with Marie and she said the money has not been confirmed yet, She will need to have a meeting with the rest of TAS before she  would beable to make that kind of decision.  And if TAS is able to give any money to pay for the security bill, it will only be a small amount.  Also, I was wondering if you know Reagan's number as She may now of a contact with the union that would beable to help out aswell.
Talk to you all soon.

Thanks Corey.

I find this very bewildering. I understand that procedurally, TAS
may need to have an Exec. meeting in order to formalize a payment to
VTF or Rhodes, but beyond that I am not really getting this.

Marie and/or TAS officers on this list, could you please speak to this
issue?

From my perspective, TAS obtained what was basically a windfall of
cash that was intended to be used in support of trans people. Prior to
the Beyer event, I asked Marie if TAS would be prepared to direct the
proceeds of the event to helping cover the security bill and she
responded positively that TAS would wish to help. There was no sense
of how much those proceeds would be, but then at the event Marie
confirmed to all in attendance that the proceeds from that event were
up near the $400 mark. That means it's a large enough sum to cover
the entire security bill that was issued to Rhodes. I cannot think of
any more appropriate item for TAS to spend that money on. Frankly, I
see it as community money not TAS money. If things will roll like
this, I will certainly agitate to ensure that in future, orgs like
BCGEU or Egale Canada direct their money from events like the Beyer
talk to VTF, not to TAS. I suspect there are people on this list who
would join in that cause.

From my own perspective, to leave this situation as one where you
Corey, and/or other collective members are effectively being asked to
cover that security bill from our own pockets while TAS banks the
proceeds from the Beyer event is outrageous and unacceptable.

Is there a misunderstanding here? I certainly hope so.

She was apparently referring to someone in HEU.
The amount I announced was $349.00 not $400.00 and by agreement with EGALE
and BCGEU, AT LEAST part of the proceeds were to go to the costs of the
Annual TAS Xmas Party.
I'm not sure how expressing a willingness to help out got turned into paying
the whole shot.
TAS was not the whole of the VTF. Is no one else going to contribute to
this?
TAS does not have a lot of money and we do have other expenses.

Sorry to clog the list., but I just want to indicate that I would be
happy to pay at least $39.08 towards the security bill, that being the
difference between the $388.08 bill and the $349.00 windfall TAS
reaped from trans allies and trans people via the Beyer event. There
could be interest accumulating on that now overdue security bill,
however. I'm willing to pay that interest too.

Thanks Marie.

I don't think rhetorical questions require a reply. I'll just mention
that Egale Canada changed its name from the acronym EGALE about 10
years ago now in order to be more inclusive of trans and bi folks.
Just FYI for future communications in your capacity as a rep of the
trans community. I get irritated when I see someone write EGALE. But
that's me.

To me this is a complete no-brainer. The money was made on the
community's back basically, and putting it towards paying (or offering
to loan it for that purpose) an outstanding bill arising from an
outstanding community event that has thus far left our gracious hosts
at Rhodes stiffed for a security bill makes complete sense to
prioritize and it also gets the matter off Corey's plate, where we
have all left it sitting for months now.. But it's obviously not my
decision and I'll back off from further engagement in light of Kay's
message. I'll just say that there has been lots of time to fundraise
for a "xmas" (or seasonal for us non-christians) party and my
impression is that absent this windfall, TAS wasn't going to have or
raise coin for a xmas party, so my heartstrings just aren't feeling
very tugged here.

I'm out now and off-list but I remain eager to work on future issues
and projects, though perhaps in a different institutional context and
with different players. I'm also grouchy today. That probably shows.

Best y'all,

Hi Shannon.

"Egale Caada changed its name from the acronym EGALE about 10

years ago now in order to be more inclusive of trans and bi folks"

Thanks for the update, Shannon, perhaps you should address it to Holly Page,
though. Since most days I no longer have the use of my left hand - even to
use the shift key, I no longer type most messages - I cut and paste from
handy documents on my hard drive - in this case an Email from Holly.

"The money was made on the community's back basically"

Oh? Which community is that? On the backs of usually means on the labour
of. Who built the meeting? Who went to the Labour Council to appeal for
member unions to endorse it or contribute money? Who printed the leaflets
and posters for delegates to take away? Who got the poster - which I made,
foolishly thinking that Egale would come out with a better one soon, posted
in the CUPW office and in the Vancouver Mail Processing Plant? Egale? VTF?
No, me - ie. TAS

"off Corey's plate, where we have all left it sitting for months now."

And that is the point, I made it clear (I thought) that TAS would stand in
for its share of the costs, right at the beginning. Where are the others?

"I'll just say that there has been lots of time to fundraise
for a "xmas" (or seasonal for us non-christians) party and my
impression is that absent this windfall, TAS wasn't going to have or
raise coin for a xmas party, so my heartstrings just aren't feeling
very tugged here."

I use the X mas as opposed to christmas precisely because I am not a
christian either - probably more so than you,. having dumped that before you
were born. X is a mathematical symbol for a variable and mas is short for
mass - a term that predates christianity despite its use by the catholic
church.

In any case, timing is a big part of budgeting. This windfall(?!) - lets
ignore the part that TAS had in organizing and promoting it - became part of
our budgeting for the xmas party. Especially in view of the expressed desire
of our partners in this that at least part of the proceeds go to this event,
shall I tell Raigen to contact you about volunteering for fundraising for

Alright all,

I have not heard from any one in terms of the next meeting.  So can I suggest that we try Caffe Artigiano next saturday, Nov. 6, at 2:00pm.

What does everyone think?  This can be changed and altered but we do need to get the ball rolling.  So if others can give input, this will help the process along.  thanks

Also, it would be great if we could have a running list of things to talk about.  I know I would like to talk about thank you cards, VTF volunteer gathering, what we did well/ need to improve on, discussion on if we are moving forward or not, and if we are what is our plan, finances/ outstanding expenses.  Anyway, i would like to hear what others would like to talk about.

Namaste,
Corey

I'm fine with Sat at 2pm  ... but the Caffè Artigiano on West Pender is pretty small ... for what it's worth,  i'm guessing we'd probably be more comfortable at The Whip

Sure the whip sounds fine.  I have never been there.  what is it like?  Where exactly is it?

Okay, whew. I was just about to run out the door in a panic and floor it to downtown.

TAS has not yet received a bill from the city. That's not to say it won't ever happen, but the longer the time goes by with no bill, the less likely it is to ever show up and the more we all like that.

TAS is also prepared to help towards a portion of the security bill (which is why I was hoping Marie and/or Roxanna and I would be in attendance), but we need to see and get a copy of the actual bill before we cut a cheque.

Hi All,

I have been speaking to Shannon although has choosen for her to back away from the group.  She would like to pay for the bill sometime this week in fact.  She is not worried about being paid pack.  Her intention from my understanding is to make sure the relationship with Rhodes with myself and VTF is covered and the bill itelf is paid and out of the way.

I am personally ok with this, however, I would personally want to try to pay Shannon back as soon as we are able.

What does everyone else think?

Do we have anymore information from TAS?

Hi all,

I now have in my possession the original bill from the security company.  As I said before Rhodes has paid the bill and we just need to pay Rhodes.

So I can get this to Emily or Marie at some point, so they have a phyiscal copy of the original bill.  I can also get a copy to VTF or any other body that is assisting us with this bill, including, Shannon.

Please let me know what you all think.

yes, thank you shannon and corey for handling this so far. i definetly would like it if we paid shannon back. a few people spent a lot of energy fundraising before the forum, putting on the whole film festival with basically no support etc. i would like to avoid that this time.
I know i have been relatively silent lately but I am feeling ready to start stepping back in.
ok, see yall at the next meeting.

Hi All,

I want to check in as I have not seen any discussion of this through any threads as of Yet.  Are we having a thankyou card party on Saturday?  if so when and where?

My understanding was that it was not confirmed yet as we needed to check in with the rest of the list.  Maybe we need to designate someone to start these discussions, as I know it can be easy to forget sometimes.

Hey all, I wanted to check in to see what we are doing with the remaining amount of the security bill.  As $200 has been paid for $188.08.  I have not heard from Shannon in a while, so I am not sure what is happening there.

What do we want to do to pay this off?

Not to dogpile on this, but you all should know TAS finally got the bill from the city for the march. It's $100 for a Special Events Permit, no policing costs. Considering what it could have been, that's a relief, but that's also something else to consider for fundraising.
