Greetings, colleagues,

Does anyone know of a colleague out there who uses social media to conduct research?  Alternatively, anyone out there who conducts addiction research or interventions for ATOD (alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs) cessation?

The following should be in the Daily Report tomorrow:

Please join the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) on Tuesday 1/14/2014 at 4:30 PM in the 2nd floor conference room in Historic Mandeville Hall.  AVP for Research Charles Maris will be leading a discussion on a National Institutes for Health (NIH) grant for using social media to understand and address substance use and addiction. Any faculty or staff interested in learning more about this specific grant opportunity should plan on attending.

Learn more about the NIH grant for “Using Social Media to Understand and Address Substance Use and Addiction” here.  The grant is due at the end of March.  We’re especially interested in faculty whose research interests include social media, interventions for healthy behavior, addiction, and tobacco cessation.

RSVP if you plan on attending here.

We hope you can join us

I'd like to put together a team to consider pursuing the above-linked grant.  Please read and share with any colleagues that might be interested.  ORSP will be hosting a workshop for any interested faculty or staff that are curious about this federal grant on Tuesday 1/14/2014 at 4:30 PM in the ORSP conference room in the historic Mandeville building.

"The goal of this FOA is to inspire and support research projects investigating the role of social media in risk behaviors associated with the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (hereafter referred to as "ATOD") and projects using social media to ameliorate such behaviors. Each research project proposed in response to this FOA must be focused on one of the two distinct areas:  1) observational research using social media interactions as surveillance tools to aid in the understanding of the epidemiology, risk factors, attitudes, and behaviors associated with ATOD use and addiction, or 2) intervention research measuring the reach, engagement, and behavioral and health impact of social media-based interventions for the screening, prevention, and treatment, of ATOD use and addiction.  Original research preliminary data are not required but all projects are expected to be supported by a strong rationale that is based on integrating to the extent possible the available relevant information from various sources."

Your assistance in identifying faculty that research internet privacy, addiction, social media, adolescent risk factors related to ATOD use, and screening, prevention, and intervention would be greatly appreciated
