Theme: Additive Manufacturing

Prize: $250,000 USD

Email of Intent is Encouraged: April 30, 2014

Deadline for Complete Nomination: May 31, 2014

On behalf of The Franklin Institute, I invite you to nominate candidates for the
2015 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science. This award is presented
annually by The Franklin Institute to a distinguished member of the international
scientific community for outstanding work in the basic, applied, or engineering
sciences. A gold medal and a cash prize of $250,000 are bestowed upon the individual
selected to receive the award.
Each year, a predetermined field of study is chosen as a theme. The theme of the
2015 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science is Additive Manufacturing.
The Franklin Institute seeks nominations of individuals who have made significant
scientific contributions to the development and applications of additive manufacturing,
popularly known as 3-D printing. Nominations should recognize fundamental contributions
that have had a broad impact. Contributions include but are not limited to: design
and analysis; processes and machines; materials and materials processing; and applications
in bio-additive manufacturing, defense, space, medicine, energy, education, and
the environment.

For more information on nominating a candidate for the 2015 Bower Award and Prize
for Achievement in Science, please visit www.fi.edu/franklinawards [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0016nonHs-HQZrAWTbTrLH2vrePOJYCJ8xUs2VlOj93ycNCt8pPeL7UFlC0_o2aWwkB4Z39dH7ukYKkQV4ZO0H8v95zKkliyktVOTeRqiavCFrNDBDuTP_NnmodZcVDBu8XI_9G6DpEF_88wpbDgLQNkQ==].

Established in 1990 through a bequest from Philadelphia chemical manufacturer and
philanthropist Henry Bower (1896----1988), the Bower Award and Prize for Achievement
in Science and the Bower Award for Business Leadership are the newest in the Institute's
long history of recognizing and encouraging achievement in science, technology,
and leadership. The Franklin Institute Awards Program is among the oldest comprehensive
international science and technology awards programs in the world. Through The Franklin
Institute Awards, which today comprises the Benjamin Franklin Medals and the Bower
Awards, the Institute has honored more than 2,000 luminaries since 1824, representing
the greatest minds of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. The roster of Franklin
Institute Laureates reads like a Who's Who of science and invention, including
eminent scientific and technological minds such as Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison,
Rudolf Diesel, Marie and Pierre Curie, Alexander Graham Bell, Max Planck, Orville
Wright, Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marshall Nirenberg, Ruth
Patrick, Stephen Hawking, Allen Newell, Douglas Engelbart, Ahmed Zewail, Martin
Rees, Ralph Cicerone, John Mather, Marvin Minsky, Paul Baran, Jane Goodall, Gordon
Moore, Elizabeth Blackburn, Andrew Viterbi, Steven Squyres, Bill Gates, JoAnne Stubbe,
Dean Kamen, and Subra Suresh. I urge you to nominate a candidate whose name should
be added to this distinguished list.
Please forward this Call for Nominations to colleagues who may wish to submit a
nomination or to professional associations to which you belong. Please also post
this material on any appropriate websites you manage. Questions about the appropriateness
of a particular nomination are welcome and may be directed to Dr. Frederic Bertley,
Senior Vice President for Science, The Franklin Institute, at fber...@fi.edu [mailto:fber...@fi.edu].
If you know of a candidate who has made an extraordinary contribution in the area
of additive manufacturing, I strongly encourage you to participate in this 2015
Bower nomination process.

Dennis M. Wint, Ph.D.
