There is no limit on the number of applicants per department.

The Hartwell Foundation call for proposals involves two steps:
1) Applicants must first submit a pre-proposal; and
2) individuals whose pre-proposals are accepted will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Pre-proposals are due to Tracy Cabot in the School of Medicine and Public Health by noon, Thursday, June 12, 2014.

The Hartwell Foundation Individual Biomedical Research Award will provide financial support to stimulate discovery in early-stage biomedical research that will benefit children. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has been selected as one of the 10 research institutions to compete for this award. The Hartwell Foundation requires each selected research institution to hold an internal open competition to identify up to four nominees, based upon application requirements set forth by the Foundation.

-       Proposals must describe early-stage, innovative, and cutting-edge biomedical research that will benefit children.
-       The research proposed may not have had significant funding from outside sources.
-       Proposals should be based on sound science and should "make a difference".
-       The applicant should discuss thoroughly the ideas of innovation, collaboration, the deployment of technology to address the problem, and the significance or outcomes of the proposed research.
-       Awards are $100K/year for 3 years (NO INDIRECT COSTS)
-       All recipients MUST be US citizens who hold a full-time appointment and be able to serve as PI.

Proposals should be from appropriate areas of basic and applied life sciences, principally limited to medicine and biomedical engineering, and consistent with the values of the Hartwell Foundation.  Proposals should reflect relevance in terms of potential benefits to children. The Foundation will only consider proposals in biomedical research. The Foundation will not consider, for example, research in social science, psychology, ecology, environmental impacts, anthropology, or botany.

Pre-proposals are due to Tracy Cabot in the School of Medicine and Public Health by noon, Thursday, June 12, 2014.  As detailed on page one of the attachment, candidates must submit a 2-page pre-proposal consisting of an Abstract, a 250-word lay summary, and the Specific Aims for the project, in addition to a full Biographical Sketch including Other Support.  15 complete paper copies and one electronic copy of these materials must be delivered to Tracy Cabot in the School of Medicine and Public Health Dean's Office, 4113 Health Sciences Learning Center, for the internal competition.
