All,

A professor at the University of Utah is offering an informal seminar this summer to help people learn how to use Flask as well as Vagrant. I've asked, and it is open to anyone - just read Dr. Chapman's instructions below and reply to him with the requested information.

In the past, he's taught graduate level courses in the past using where Python is the main language used for visualizing data, analyzing data, and using more advanced libraries for machine learning.

Subject: Informal Seminar on Building Web Applications with Flask

Building Web Applications with Flask

This informal seminar will step through the process of building web applications using Flask, "a microframework for Python." The seminar will be conducted via Bitbucket, YouTube videos, e-mails, and face-to-face get togethers where we review each others code, help each other with sticking points, and general work together in building web applications. No grades. No tuition. No pressure.

Background

I assume you have some basic Python programming skills, can use git for version control of code, and have a clear application in mind that you would like to build. I will be building two applications myself: 1) an application for human-based document-level annotation of radiology reports, and 2) a digital quotebook.

Materials

I will be going through the O'Reilly publication Flask Web Development., which can be accessed for free through a Marriott Library's digital subscription. This book has an excellent learning approach based on git that allows us to see code at various stages of development. My approach will be to modify the author's code to match my own application and I will share these modificaitons with people participating in the seminar. I will also make use of Flask Framework Cookbook, which is also available through the library.

In addition to Python and Flask, we will look at creating virtual machines with our application using Vagrant

How to Participate

  1. Create an account on Bitbucket
  2. Send me an e-mail at brian....@utah.edu stating your interest in participating and your bitbucket user name.
  3. Participate in a Doodle poll about best times to have face-to-face meetings

I would like to start the seminar mid-May. The seminar will proceed at your own pace. I plan on having my own applications built by early June.
